(suitable for elder kids, senior primary students)
I got some of these last summer when i visit GZ, the books's paper quality is not very good, too thin, but the content of the book is very interesting, suitable for P5 or above.
My son is 5 yrs old. He is able to read the storybook (~ORT level 6-7) now. I started to read books with him everyday since he was 3.5.
At the beginning, I chose books with topics and characters that he loved. Later on, when he was 4 , he understanded the basic phonics rules (through letterland phonics, between the lion, learning to read with phonics) and picked up most of the high frequency words during reading.
He starts to read book series like, Oxford Reading tree, Step-into-reading, Ready-to-read, DK reader series, Little miss and Mr. men series. (He gets lots of fun during reading and cannot stop reading every night before sleep!!!) Luckily that I can get books in much lower price for the China version now.
So don't give up, just let your kids exploring different kinds of book and one day, you'll find that they can read by themselves.
BTW, the Magic Key Series Storybooks are now available at "IXXX". Their selling price is $30@. If you're interested you may take a look or call them to reserve the books.

The magic key series are really very colorful and good printing quality (printed in UK). The books are quite difficult ~ ORT stage 8 (I'm not sure whether they are exactly equivalent to which level of ORT.)
Do you have the Magic Key VCD? The stories are the same as those from the books.
Probably, I can scan some pages and upload here tonight so that you may consider whether they're suitable to your son
I also tried to read a story to my son (who is aged 3yr4mth) every night before sleep.
May I know the technique used in reading stories?
When you read a story, will you use Cantonese or wholly English? Do you need to point to the word shown in the story book or you just let him look at the pictures of the stories?
Thanks for your suggestion on books that introduces maths concept.
Last Friday, I went to Ixxx and bought a set of Maths exercise books. They teach counting concept and simple addition and subtraction.
I also took a look at OUP books. I guess they just arrived at that time. I saw Rainbow series and found that it's quite difficult even at level 1. It's quite expensive too. Recall that it is $180 for level 1 with only four books.
For the Magic key series, it's too expensive to me and difficult for my son. I let him watch VCD first.
Hello kittylock,
I read books with my son every night. For English books, I just sit beside him and let him follow CD to read the books aloud. His focus is in words rather than pictures. I always need to arouse his attention on the pictures.
Very appreciated of all your sharing with us here and would like to say thank you, because I have got a lot from you.
As my girl will be 2 years old soon, I have found that she is very week in math even in very simple counting. I want to get some source for improving her Math, there are two sets of math books you have suggested to us, do you think it is suitable for a 2 years old child? or do you have any good math book can suggest to me.
Do you think it's a bit early to expect a 2 year old girl to do counting? Probably, they should be in the stage of distinguishing large and small, more or less, long an short, and other simple math concept.
You may consider to buy some simple picture books or VCDs teaching basic math concepts.
This is a very good VCD teaching kids how to count and have lots of songs.
Children will love helping Lily Bunny count from 1 to 20! "Tra la la, 1,2,3, come along and count with me," is the song that Lily sings as she starts off on her counting adventure. Along the way she meets Huckle Cat, Lowly Worm, Wrong-Way Roger, Bananas Gorilla, and many other delightful Richard Scarry characters who each help her find funny things to count.
Learning to count has never been more fun than in the Best Counting Video Ever!
Maisy Mouse series has VCD about counting which is suitable for younger kids.
Thank you for your advise.
My girl is good at wording, she can count from 1 to 50 by speaking the number out. But if I show her 3 pieces of candies, and ask her how many, she will tell me two, four, ..... I am keep trying to teach her how to count correctly with her little finger pointing on the object. But still nothing improve. I want to get something for her learning to count with fun and something for me to improve my way of teaching her.
I think richard Scarry's best counting ever VCD may suitable for my girl, do you know where can I get it.
Your daughter is really very clever! (My son and daughter start to talk quite late.)
Yes. You can try Richard Scarry VCD. As in the VCD, LIly Bunny counts from 1-20 with a funny approach and sings along that can help kids to follow and understand easily. (Highly recommended.)
There are totally 6 VCDs in the Richard Scarry Series.
