As for Hotels - I usually stay in Swisshotel, Conrad and Ritz Carlton during business trips. And I would recommend Ritz Carlton anytime for service and decor and room comfort.
Apparently the Singapore Post Office converted hotel near Battery Road- can't rem the name suddenly, is actually a very in hotel nowadays in SIN. However, I hear that it is very expensive.
Of course for the westerners, Raffles Hotel is like THE hotel to stay at least once in a life-time. Shangrila Hotel is another of their selections too. But they are just expensive unless the guests are there to enjoy the rooms and facilities in the hotels.
Basically the hotel rooms in SIN are of a reasonable size and standard. I have not really seen bad hotels unless those of budget levels, say below S$100. And since SIN is quite small (approx 30 mins of car driving from 1 end to the other end of the island), it doesn't really matter in my opinion where a person stays as taxis are quite easily available.
