I've checked a several piano schools, they told me the same:-
- they also have 2yrs 9 mths old students
- if the kid can sit say for half an hour, then OK
- can concentrate for a while, then OK
& from the begining, will teacher them the notes, every note & position (same to me what I learnt before, but I only attended a quarter as no chance to practise).
