Dear Spiderpig,

I did a simple calculation. Your DHEA-S level is rather low, slightly lower than my original one. This may be the reason of your problems. I think you can start the DHEA. I read more about the U.S. women who are taking it, most of them have very high FSH and they got pregnant after taking the DHEA. I copied down a recent link of a U.S. chat room I often read. This one showed a more recent medical research study done in Greece indicating the effectiveness of the DHEA. You can check it out on your own.

I had the best ivf cycle this time. I do not know whether I will get pregnant or not but at least the egg quality and quantity are greatly improved. If I am not pregnant this time, I will do another one next month.

Hi Spiderpig,

You have to take at least 16weeks before it can build up inside your body. If you start taking it now, you should be ok by Sept. You have to take 25mg x 3 times per day. If you have frined who will go to the US, that will be great to ask them to get some.

You shold keep testing your FSH and DHEA monthly if you can to monitor any improvement. Do you remember how many follicles did you have on your Day2 or 3 in your last ivf treatment???

Actually I took the regular DHEA bought at GNC. The dramatic changes I had in my current ivf cycle are the effect of the regular DHEA. The GNC hotline is 2299-3390. You can call to see which store is close to you.

The U.S. doctor recommended micronized pharmaceutical grade DHEA. The difference between the regular one and the micronized one is that the particles of the micronized one are smaller and are easier for the body to absorb. Also, pharmaceutical grade means 99% are DHEA. I ordered one bottle from the internet. I am just taking the one from the GNC. I think that they can only be ordered through the internet. But you can ask your friend to try in the local drug store in the U.S. I think that the difference between the two kinds are not that big.

You need to take 3 times per day, each time one pill of 25mg. Total intake is 75 mg per day.

It takes about 4 to 5 months for the DHEA to get the peak (best) effect. You should have enough time if you do ivf in Sept. I just cannot wait and therefore did my ivf after 5 weeks. But the results are much improved over my previous ivfs.

DHEA usually helps in two ways, (1) increase the number of eggs, (2) increase the quality of eggs. If you can check your antral follicles (tiny follicles) in your ovaries on Day 3, you will know whether the number is increasing. In terms of the quality, you will know after you do the ivf, whether the eggs are fertilized or growing each day on schedule.

Dear Spiderpig,

You have to continue to take the DHEA even though you are doing the nasal spray, injection of stimulating hormone, and even after embryo transfer. If you have your blood test and confirm that you are pregnant, then you stop at that time. If you are not pregnant, you need to continue to take it.

For those who want to monitor your progress after taking the DHEA, you can check:

(1) The DHEA-S level
(2) FSH on Day 3
(3) the number of antral follicles on Day 3. More of them will grow into mature eggs under stimulation if DHEA works for you.
(4) the thickness of the lining of your uterus (endometrium). The latest medical report said that the lining is also thicker. Some women fail to have implantation because their lining is too thin.
(5) the quality of the eggs can only be found after egg fertilization.

Don't be too worried about the side effects, I don't think many people will have these side effects. Every drug will have its side effects too. Now you know the side effects, you can put extra caution of these, once the side effects develop, then you stop taking it. If the doctor told you that you do not have many follicles, it is worthy to have a try.

I understand your concern about the side effects of the DHEA. I think you should not be too anxious about that. When did you have your hair fall out? Was it a long time ago?

Since your DHEA-S level is so low in your body, you need to raise it. The medical research begin to suspect that one of the reasons for the aging of our ovaries is because the DHEA-S level decreases as we get older.

Of course, some people may have hair loss. It seems that it is only a small number of individuals have such a problem. You may not have the same problems as they do.

I am on it for 7 weeks now. I do not have any hair loss or have any pimples. Actually, I feel that I look better after I take it. You may try first and see whether you have any side effects.

Like what Frisbe mentioned in this thread before, not everyone needs to take DHEA, See the following information:-

Who should take DHEA?
a) Women who are older than 40 or
b) younger women who produces less than 4 eggs under high dose of stimulation. They are consider poor responders.

So, have you tried any cancelled ivf cycle before??? Your FSH level is not too high, you may not need it. PCOS patients CANNOT take DHEA as it is a mild male hormone.

我今年39歲啦, 之前有pcos時候做ivf都有十幾粒蛋! 今年1月做iui打針10日 150iu/each time, 就有3 粒蛋, 咁樣嘅反應正唔正常呢?

If you had PCOS, better not to take, this is my opinion. You can ask ypur dr.

I will update my recent progresses after taking DHEA. I just had my egg retrieval yesterday. Today I got the results showing that all of my 10 eggs fertilized.

Ivf #1 Nov. 2007 (3 embryos, 4, 5, 6 cells)

Ivf #2 Feb. 2008 (4 embryos, 3, 4, 4, 5 cells)

Ivf #3 early Mar. 2008 (cancelled, only 1 mature follicle)

Ivf #4 late Mar. 2008 (4 embryos, 7, 7, 8, 8 cells) after taking DHEA for 5 weeks, 225 units of Gonal-F for 8 days.

Ivf #5 Apr. 2008 (10 embryos) after taking DHEA for 10 weeks, 225 units of Gonal-F for 8 days.

My progresses showed that DHEA dramatically improves both the quantity and quality (no. of cells increases) of the embryos. Even though I used much less Gonal-F, the results keep improving. Less stimulation saves me lots of money. DHEA also improves the uterine lining for implantation. The lining was 12.6 mm in thickness during my last ivf.

The peak effects will take place in 4 to 5 months. If you can wait, do not rush to do ivf so soon like me. Your results will be better if you give it a few months to work. You should also ask your doctor to give you all information so that you can see your progress.

However, DHEA does not work for PCOS cases.
