I went to 大陸童書書店 in Mongkok yesterday. I tried to order the book "First step to reading". At last I haven't paid because they charged me $68 x 3, totally $204. The cashier insisted she has confirmed with China bookstore the price.

How much you paid?

Hi all,

I bought those 3 books (without CD or cassette) of "First step to reading" in Guangzhou few months ago at more or less RMB10 each (I will check the exact price later when I return home). Personal, I don't mind if there is a CD or cassette as I can read aloud it to my son, the words are pretty easy I think.

I have checked from dangdang.com and found that Books 1-3 cost RMB 8.33, 11.73 and 11.73. The cassette costs RMB 5.95 each. So the whole set costs about RMB 50.

I also checked the price at dangdang. They sell them separately and without parent guide that means we need to pay $1 (handling fee) few times. I found two of them in $11.73 are also include one tape. Didn't you? I have sent out enquiry asking about the content of the book. Hope they will have feedback.

I ordered the books from Dangdang and paid by AE card online. I check the statement and find that they will convert from RMB back to HK currency as the rate of => 1.04 RMB: 1HKD (as my total order is $826.37 CHINA YUAN RENMINBI and the transaction is only $HK796.87).

It's really worth to buy books from dangdang too. As most of the items in Dangdang has 10-25% or even higher discount and the delivery charge is very low (the difference in the rate between RMB to HK let me save around $30 which can cover 2/3 of the delivery cost.)

If you want to place an order in Dangdang, remember to use an office / commercial building address (Because they will charge as 40% of total amount of the order as postage fee if the destination is a residential address.)

For the First Step to reading, I ask Countrywind to find for me. (But I'm not sure if they can find it). I cannot find the whole set in Dangdang, they have the books without CD-ROM and teaching guide.

They separate into 3 items:
481568 吃饭说英语 $11.73 (with tape)
481566 外出旅游说英语 $8.3 (no tape)
481567 看动物说英语 $11.73 (with tape)

Anyway, Comparing with the GC $1XXX, it's really cheap and I've order all these 3 books too. The most important thing is your reading/playtime with your kids (not those ....).(Later if countrywind can find a set for me, then I can give the books to my friend as gift.)

Yes! It's a good choice to buy books online (I used to order books from amazon.com, paddyfield.com, yesasia.com too). However, online bookstore can never substitue the position of bookstore. As I'm a bookworm, I like to examine / read and drill the books in the bookshop. Yummy Yummy

(If you didn't have much of the Disney film, I highly recommend the set of 23DVDs classic disney film (Now 30% of original price, i.e. RMB85 only), the Snoopy collection 20 DVDs with 56 episodes (RMB $150, cheaper than the set I bought at China Bookstore) and Tom and Jerry 10DVDs set (RMB44 only, the cheapest one I find in ShamSHuiPo is ~$100!!!).

The eldest son 5yrs old, 2nd daughter 3yrs old and the youngest daughter is 15mths.

Woo, you have 3 children that's why you bought many books.

Tks your advice. I will reserve "first step" at CWB 大陸, they said the shipment is around mid of Sept. And I may order some books at dangdang.com later.

我家有一個7歲及一個3歲小孩已經攪到我頭昏腦脹。
真佩服，因為我見你仲可以成日去逛書店、上網揾書，唔簡單。
我都有上Dangdang，呀，發覺有好多書都係連tape嘅，我家唯一一部tape機都壞壞哋，點解唔出CD架？
另外，我喺Dangdang揾唔到套"贝贝熊"，喺另外一個你之前介紹嘅網就揾到，如果Dangdang有就唔使我分開黎訂啦。請問你知唔知佢地有冇呢？或者我會send email問下佢地。

I checked already the price of the 3 books of "First Step to Reading" at home, each costs RMB9.8. So I guess the one with cassettes sold at dangdang.com is a best buy.

By the way, I saw the 23 DVDs of disney movie in the mainland bookshop, at a price of HK$230 a box! I guess I will go after dangdang instead.

Can anyone let me know the best time for giving "first step to reading" to my baby?

When you all say "mainland bookstore"? Is it in China/Shenzhen or somewhere in Hong Kong?

Also, I heard that if we buy things from Shenzhen (esp DVD/VCD) and caught by Customs, we need to fine at $10,000 per disk. What about books? Is that OK?

Sorry for so many questions as I don't know how to teach my baby...

First step is suitable from 1.5 years up to 5 years at least.

The mainland bookstore called 大陸書局 in CWB and Mongkok or all bookstore which sell Simplify Chinese Books also called mainland bookstore e.g. Countrywind 國風 also in CWB and Mongkok.

I think buy book is no problem.

Now we are talking about buying books thought dangdang.com online.

I've just make a transaction in Dangdang yesterday. I'm also working in Kwun Tong. The sum of the books is about 33x, the delivery charge is only about 28.
