This is the e-mail I got from my kids' school this morning - the school is taking this dust storm very seriously:

WEDNESDAY 23RD SEPT, 2009
DUE TO THE EXTREME WEATHER
•
Year 3 Excursion was postponed to next term, 18th Nov.
•
Intensive Swimming was abandoned for the day. Swim safety talks were conducted in the classrooms.
•
Students were contained in their classrooms as per wet roster.
•
Canteen operated on student orders only.
•
Students monitored for any sign of discomfort or stress.
•
All care was taken for the wellbeing of students

that should be fine. I was told by my boy's teacher that they will be kept indoor today, remember to bring a mask for her when you pick her up after school.

My girl told me that the teacher kept them indoor today as well as lunch time too. She is fine when I picked her up from school.

Is there any moms know the difference between "National Assessment Program" held by Department of Education and Training of NSW and "International Competitions and Assessments for schools" which held by the University of NSW?

NAPLAN is compulsory (except under certain situation).
ICAS is a competition - parents decide whether they want their child to do it or not.
Both gives you an idea of how your child is performing compared to other children statewide.
Good for additional exam experience for the child.

Who sits the tests?
Every year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across the country in government
and non-government schools sit the NAPLAN tests.

Are any students exempted from sitting NAPLAN tests?
Students with severe intellectual or functional disabilities or students from a non-
English speaking background who have been learning English in Australia for
less than one year are eligible for exemption. However, this is not automatic and
parents may choose for their child to participate.

What is tested?
Students in the same year level across Australia complete a writing task and are
tested on items in Reading, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and
Punctuation) and Numeracy.

How do students benefit from these tests?
NAPLAN tests provide information for parents, teachers and schools on individual
student performance. Teachers and schools use this information, in conjunction
with other information, to determine how well their students are performing and to
identify any areas of need requiring assistance.

Q What is ICAS?

A ICAS refers to the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (formerly the Australasian Schools Competitions & the International Competitions for Schools). ICAS provides accurate and easy-to-interpret assessment information.

For schools:
reports detailing each student’s performance and comparing it with the school’s cohort and also with the performance of other students within the same state, region or country who did the test.
ICAS are the only assessments covering six core learning areas; Mathematics, Science, English, Writing, Spelling and Computer Skills. Each test item is constructed by subject experts and reviewed by practising teachers, to ensure it is engaging and relevant. So, we use the results of NAPLAN to determine whether they can get into Selective Highs ?

BTW, I live in Epping and have 2 girls.
I am a working mum though. :(

Test for selective school is sat around March in Year 6 - a different test all together.

Though I have known another Mum who used the NAPLAN & ICAS results to help her daughter get into MLC at Burwood & skip a year.

My girl got top results in NAPLAN (2 above band 6 and the others are band 6). But for the ICAS, she only got "Credit" for the English and Writing, and "Distinction" for Spelling, so I just wonder is the ICAS is much difficult than NAPLAN????

Can you also recommend how to improve the Grammer? For writing, my girl got very high score in Genre but with very low score in Grammar, that's why end up she can only got "Credit".

My hubby drove through MLC at Burwood last time, the environment is very nice, do you think it is very difficult to get a seat?

Fairly good private school, but expensive school fees.
Shouldn't be that hard to get into.
My friend used the results to justify moving her daughter into the next grade.

We already talked to the teacher on the parents' day and she said it is normal as our mother tongue is not English, that is we don't use past tense like "ed", and this problem will be improved once my girl is getting older in the coming years.

I bought a grammer exercise for my girl this afternoon, hopes it will help.......need time to try!
