Dear moms,

I found that it is hard for me to apply for a credit card. I think maybe I do not have a job right now and I filled in the income part as household. How can I create a credit history if i haven't any credit card on hand? (I only have credit cards from Hong Kong banks) Besides, I will be charged if i open a saving a/c here (different from HK's), i want to know if there are any banks that will not have such fee.

In addition, as I arrived in US in October 09, do i need to file tax return in US for the year of 2009? I have worked in HK before I came here.

Thanks for your info in advance.

It is normal to be hard to apply for a credit card as you have not built up your credit history yet. You can instead apply for a debit card from a bank but you have to have a saving account or checking account in this bank first. After 1 year, you should be able to get a credit card. To build your credit, do not pay off the debt in full in the first 3 months but pay more than minimum (as the interest charge is high). Then, after that, you can pay in full every month. This is to tell the bank that you are able and will be responsible to pay your debt. And, the record shows that you pay on time and it's how the credit builds up. Building credit is very important as a good credit can help you to lower the interest rate when you apply for a mortgage and to avoid deposit when you open a cell phone plan plus many other services.

Yes, a lot of banks start to charge fee for their services but I think that
the service fee can be waived if you deposit up to certain amount of money into the bank and maintain it in a monthly basis.

For tax filing, I would say yes if you look for naturalization in the future. However, do you have all the documents in hand? It requires the employer's endorsement. You can check the website of IRS to see what kind of documents are needed. www.irs.gov/

Dear rose-mag,

Thank you very much for such detailed info. I don't quite understand why I should not pay the debt in full in the first three months in order to get a good credit history. Can't I earn credit if I pay the debt in full in the first three months? (cos I don't want to pay the interests if I have money to pay the debt).

That is what my husband told me before. You don't pay in full but you pay on time and it means that you take the responsibility to pay and the bank believe that you will pay the debt in the future. If you pay in full from the beginning, you can still earn credit score but the bank would not like to do business with you because you don't let the bank make money. That's what my husband told me. Honestly speaking, I queried the same thing before but my husband told me that the logic works like that.

Yup, that is what Lam Sau Wing (from CA, a very nice accountant, whom does volunteer counselling on finance) said.
Also, he suggests us to have 2-3 credit cards, not one, or more than that. Sure you need to find a job to get to that point.
Then, after a period of time, your credit will build up.

Supplementary to Nillie...you need more than 1 credit card. Personal bankers told me to have at least 2 credit cards for minimum 1 year in order to get approval of mortgage. Therefore, if you want to buy a house in the future and needs to apply for mortgage, you should hold at least 2 credit cards and have good records for more than 1 year. Of course, before you can be accepted to have a credit card, you need to start build up your credit first. Steady income is important to show that you are capable to pay off the debt.

Clay,
you need to go to the bank to do it.
Those cash credit card, you must have your bank account there as well.
Some of them will give you up to $500 credit.
Such as HSBC, or Bank of America.
There were advertisement for a long time ago but did not see them anymore since the economy crash. You can go to the bank that you have your bank account and ask the bank teller about it.

Dear Nillie Mami,

Clay2008,
Chase also have that service, if you have a bank account over there, you can ask them as well

Well, life is not easy, especially ..staying in a country without help. Well, I should say "without" help.. just most of the time, you don't know where the resource is. Also, no family member around when you need help.. that is really difficult to make the life sometime.

For Co-op, it is much cheaper, but co-op, you only buy the share from that housing company, you do not own that house. Therefore, it is cheap. Even if you wanna buy the co-op, it is not very easy, because they have the group to evaluate if you eligible to buy it, your job, your income, your credit. As you will just land in NYC at April. That is not an option.
In Brooklyn as cheap as $100.000 you can get an co-op, but you don't dare to live there.
At the begining, I would suggest you to rent an apartment and take your time to search for the house. You need to be there in person to LOOK, do not rely on anyone. Because other people do not know what you want and how much you could afford.
$160,000.. I won't suggest you to use all of those money on your house.. as you don't know when you can get a job, also, your husband wants to go back to school. that is money.
At the begining, rent somewhere close to Brooklyn, or staten island, Queens.. then, once you know the area, you can start to find house.
Ask your mother and sliding, which school area is good. Then, concentrate to find the rental apartment over that area. Therefore, you can save money for something else.
If your English is very good, and you don't mind not to see any Chinese at daily base, that will be fine for you. It is 3.5 hours driving (your own car, not public transportation) away from Brooklyn, if there is no traffic. Therefore, the house overthere, sure much cheaper. if you consider something like that. I would rather suggest you to live in North Carolina. Which you have a lot of Chinese surround you with almost the same price. At least you have chinese supermarket, newspaper, radio, and restaurant. Hope you won't mind.. I am not to be "mean" to say that.. but if you mention that you don't get used to western life style..Binghamton may not be the place for you.
He needs to prepare all his license, transcripts etc in hk, and then, do the verification in CGFNS (http://www.cgfns.org) . All licenses from overseas countries must use CGFNS to do the verification and approved by dept of education in that state (in your case) your husband needs to submit the license to Dept of edu in NYS. To work as a technical assistant --I don't know what area he is in, he needs to get a license and registration before he goes and applies a job. If his education is not qualified. He may have to bear in mind that he needs to study at school and get the proper license before he could work in US again.
Here in US, many professions offer continuing education. There is not a problem. Once he has license verified and qualify to find a job, find those hospital which will sponsor him to go back to school.
We are very welcome, many families once they landed in NYC, they will come to our house for a warming party.

Thing you need to do now.
1. ask your family about which location is good for your daughter to start her school. This is the most important thing right now. Remember to have the immunization card with her, otherwise, no school will accept her application, or she will have to receive all those shots again.
2. Once you know the zone school, search online in this 2 months to find the rental apartment, and compare the price.
3. you may have to stay with you family for 1-2 weeks for support (before you get your apartment), set up bank account, get your social security card, green card, get your driving license if you get enough point. Get health insurance for your daughter thru Child Health Plus (low income insurance in NYS), family income lower than $80,000 per year (pre-tax).
4. Once you get settle down, then find job first. Because you can not buy a house without an steady income, you can buy house, but remember, as you only have $160,000.. Try not to get something more than $250,000.. as you have to pay all different tax and payment, fix the house and buy funitures... well.. you may know better that I do.. Have your family to go with you if you have to sign any paper.

Good luck. if you need any other help, YELL.. ok?
regards,
Nillie

In general, monster.com -- nationwide is a big one.
It depends on what kind of profession you are looking for, as they have there networking.
For rental.. which state are you living?? again.. it is the networking.. it depends on where you live.

Good to go to googles or yahoo. type in
"state" then, other key word. search as rental apartment, house, co-op or condon.. something like that.. then, thousands of website will pop up.

craigslist.com is a good source for rental and find job too. It's very localized. Other than rental, job, there are other services such as car, childcare, 2nd hand buying/selling, classes/groups, etc. But, as Nillie said, when you need to sign documents, check and read before you physically sign, including the fine prints.

For new comers, finding a job through temp agent is also a way to start if you don't have the luck to find a perm one yet. Sometimes, people are hired from temp to perm if they perform good at work. I was given a good offer after working for a company as a temp some years before.
