I started reading to Jacob at 3 months, and I think he doesn't really understand them until at least 2.
I don't remember whether it is www.amazon.com or www.babycenter.com get a very good reading list for children at different age. That helps a lot.

But if you really want your baby to develop good reading habit, I think it worths to build up a library at home. Repeating the books so much that they can memorize is really good for them. They can start to use and apply the words and story they learn.
