Treatment of Diarrhoea & Vomiting
The most important concept of the management of gastroenteritis is to prevent dehydration
Stage 1 (24 hrs)
- Try to obtain some Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS).
- Dissolve 1 sachet of ORS into 250 ml (8oz) of cold water.
- Administer a small portion to your baby every 10 to 15 mins. Aim to finish this amount in 2 hrs
- When the first sachet is finished, open another one and keep giving the ORS until your baby has plenty of urine.
- If he/she vomits, stop for a while & start again
Stage 2 (Day 2)
- After finishing as many sachet of ORS as possible when the vomiting & diarrhea slow down, prepare some plain rice congee or rice water.
- Try to administer the congee to your baby, slowly giving a small portion every 10-15 mins
- Aiming to consume 100 ml per hour
Stage 3 (Day 3-4)
- When the diarrhea and vomiting subside, you can continue offering small quantity of congee and/or some diluted soy formula milk
- Their appetite would not be normal but you can give small frequent portions of rice, apple sauce, banana sauce, cracker, toast, mashed potato etc over the course of the next 1-2 days
Stage 4 (Day 5)
- As the baby improves, you can increase their intake & offer more variety of products
- It is essential to remember their digestion will not be good for a few more days
- Do NOT allow them to eat too much & too fast even if they are very hungry
- Continue feeding soy milk
