rosemag,

wow! sounds like u know the good places to eat in chinatown!
i can only remember the chinese dim-sum restaurant at the Embarcadero Ctr. it's called Harbor Village or something. but it's not in chinatown either.

AKW,

yr name sounds familar although i don't see yr messages posted very often. forgot where u live ...

so yr father-in-law is caucasian? u sure he'll like chinese dim-sums?
yr hubby likes dim-sums too? most of my caucasian friends only like the deep-fried stuffs at the chinese restaurants and they don't like the stuffs like "cheung fun".

anyway, hope yr father-in-law will hv a good time when he comes over to visit.

SY_Mom,

I think I talked to you before (long time ago though). Anyway, I live in Sacramento. We go to the SF and the Bay area from time to time. We are going to SF again this Thur. I have an aunt and a cousin who live in SJ.

Yes, my FIL is Caucasian. You're probably right. I guess he won't really like dim sums...haha.....My husband actually likes authentic Chinese food more than american Chinese food! He eats dimsums, but doesn't really enjoy them. He loves Shanghainese food, especially "Siu-lone-bao" (the steamed dumplings) which actually looks like dimsum.... There is a good Shanghainese restaurant in Cupertino, I forgot the name....

SY_Mom,
My parents live in Chinatown and I used to go there everyday before I married. Now, I still always go there to eat and shop.

AKW,
My mom is helping me to take care of my 1.5 years old son in daytime and I concentrate on taking care my daughter. With her along, I can take plenty of sleep and do less housework. But, we have not decide what to do after I go back to work early next year. I wonder if she can take care of 2 kids. She has no problem to handle newborn or toddler but never have once handled 1 each before (except when I and my brothers and sister were still babies ). So, if your hubby and his family like Shanghaiese food, you can also try the restaurant called "Bao Kao Tim" in Richmond area of SF. The street should be Balboa and the cross street should be 2X Avenue (forget the exact location but you won't miss it if you drive on Balboa Street). The siu loung bao is really good and not expensive. Other stuff include man tau (steamed or fried) with sweet milk, Shanghaiese roasted pork, "3 cups" chicken. The place is average in outlook and decoration but the food is worthy for the price (not expensive though). Another choice is Golden Chopstick Restaurant, also on Balboa and the 18th Avenue. It's very small, only 2 big tables and several small tables. You need to reserve or go there early in dinner time. The food is good but a bit pricy. Their "3 cup" chicken, salt and pepper pumpkins, stir-fried rice noodles and some of the small plates and noodles with soup are really good. Hope all of you have a good time in SF.

Talking about restaurants, please allow me do a little ad for my uncle's (friend, not relative) in Albany. King Tsin Restaurant, 1699 Solano Avenue (between Ensenada Ave & Tulare Ave) Berkeley. They serve mainly American-Chinese food, but a few items are very authentic and you must try them out: 金沙蟹,雞絲粉皮,西湖脆膳。 They also serve dim sum. Very family-oriented and kids-friendly. You know some restaurants will give you the "look" when your kids are making a mess. Never happens there.

In SF Chinatown, I like to go to have 煲仔飯 at Capital Restaurant, 839 Clay St, Btwn Stocktown St & Grant Ave. Their salt and pepper chicken wings are very good.

Hi bunnymonkey,

I like that "relief" word ... I agree ah! even I love my son very much and I miss him when I'm in work, I think I don't prefer to stay full time to be a non-working mom. My parents were out of town in the past few days and I stay home to take care of him myself. After those few days, I really appreciate their help and I found that I need my own life for few hours every day ah.

Little Matthew still can't sleep over 5 hours thru the night. He used to awake every 3-4 hours every night. My friend told me if I want to delay his feeding time, I better not to feed him when he open his eye & cry for milk ... but I still can't ah ... every time he cry & look at me with his poor face, I will be "soft heart" and grab him a bottle as soon as I can gar la. Also, some people said "night milk" is very important for new born. When did you stop feed him in the middle of night gar?

I'm now feeding him breast milk mostly plus about 2 bottles of formula daily, but I'm thinking when to change to all formula instead coz it's pretty inconvenient to pump during work hours. any suggestion when to stop breast milk?

Hello ah SY_MOM~

My office is in Concord & my husband is in San Leandro. I am ok with the commute since I'm kinda against traffice even still need to take about 30min from San Ramon to Concord (I only need to take 8 min from home to work before we moved 2 months ago ... I was too lucky). Also, the living area and school in San Ramon is alot better than in Concord, so no regret to move. We saw a report shows that most of the school in San Ramon got 10 point rating gar ... the worst one still rate 8 points ah.

I think there are some hi-tech company in Pleasanton or Dublin area ah.

If your husband like brand new house, I think this period is pretty good time to buy that ah coz we knew someone who just bough a >2000sf new house in San Ramon few weeks ago, and he got almost $350,000 discount from the builder ah.

AKW,

right ... one of my french coworkers like "siao lone bao" so much. every time when we ate out together, he liked the small shanghainese or beijingnese restaurant across from our office. it's in the Cupertino Village but i forgot abt the name. but u can look around when u're in the Cupertino Village coz it's not that big. it's right off the exit of Wolfe Rd. from freeway 280. and there's a famous chinese dim-sum restaurant over there too (called Joy Luck Club). that one got a lot of americans going there too.

HappyMatt,

u know what? actually i hv a friend who also lives in yr neighhorhood and she also works in Concord or Walnut Creek. the public schools there are good, but i don't know why most of my friends still rather send their kids to the private christian schools for elementary schools.

in yr area, i can only think of PeopleSoft (now Oracle), Documentum, and Chevron for hi-tech jobs.

wow, yr friend got $350k discount from the builder? which builder? and how come they gave yr friend such a big discount?

wow, there are lots of restaurants recommended in SF area. I seldom go to the city so when ppl asked me which place is good, I will have no clue at all. For dim sum, we usually just go to Joy Luck Place in Cupertino or ABC Restaurant in Milpitas. There's a Shanghaiese restaurant in Cupertino SQ named "Wo Kong"... it's close to the Taiwanese congee place (wong wong ching juk). My hubby like Shanghaiese food tho I am not a big fan of those dumpling etc.

AKW, how often do you come down to South Bay? Next time when you come down, maybe we all can have a gathering or so. :D

HappyMatt,

I actually forgot when did I stop feeding my son in the middle of the night. :D Your bb is still small, if you can just feed him in the middle of the nite and he will go back to sleep, then it's fine. When he's a bit older, maybe you can just feed bb more right b4 he goes to sleep then it can last for longer.

How many times do you pump at work? Do they have those mother's room so you can pump there? I kinda stop pumping when my bb was like 8 months or so. But I wasn't working at the time. I didn't have much milk pumped out anyway so I gradually pump less and less... If you still have lotsa breastmilk and don't mind to pump on time, I think it's good to continue on feeding breastmilk. Afterall, it supposed to be better (then formula) and it's "free" too. :)

rose-mag,

It's nice that your mom can help you out! When you go back to work next year, your son should be old enough to go to preschool, at least for a few hours a day? That way your mom can get a break from taking care of 2 kids all day long! I don't even think I can take care of 2 kids at the same time Is your son very active?

I think I know the shanghainese restaurant you mentioned. We were trying to look for it one time (driving up and down Balboa), but couldn't find it and ended up eating at a chinese restaurant on Waverly street in chinatown. Maybe we can find it this time

We go to SF more than South Bay because my husband has to work in SF sometimes (so my son and I just go with him ). The last time we were in SJ and Milipitas was during Chinese New Year ar....long time ago. We spent the night at my cousin's house and then had lunch in Milipitas on the CNY day. There was a dancing lion show in Milipitas square~ but the wait for the restaurant was very long

I will let you know if we're going to South Bay next time! Maybe we can get together

I think if you have gutsy to ask for discount, most of the time you can get it from the builder, especially it's buyer market now. We also got $100K discount from the builder ah. I think the house he bough is from Lennar.

I think when my son ready to go to school, I just send him to the public. Maybe your friends want their children to growth under church style nar ... but I prefer to use those few hundred dollars school fee for his after school activities instead & just take him to Sunday school in Sunday morning.

Is your son going to pre-school this year? he enjoy that?

Hey bunnymonkey,

Actually I don't need to take care of my son in night time from last week coz my parents spoil me ... they are living with us since Little Matthew was borned and they moved the crib to their room in the day before I went back to work ... they siad that I need good sleep in night time in order to have good performance in work wor ... even I keep saying that is my responsibility to take care of Matthew, they still don't let me move his crib back to my room.

No mother's room for me in work ah, so I only can grab everythings to restroom to pump. I only pump twice during work hours (lunch & before take off), and I hope that can keep up the quantity la.

Just took Little Matthew to the doctor for the 2nd month check up and got his first shot ... he cried for long time ah ... "ho charm ah" ... hope he will not have fever today la.

HappyMatt,

actually my boy's been going to preschool for 2 yrs already. he's 4 now and he started preschool when he's 2.

for the builder discount, i thought it's hard to ask for it if the new houses in that community are almost sold out. coz if u don't buy it, someone else will.

u're really lucky to have yr parents help u out to take care of yr baby. in that case, u could afford to hv another kid very soon as u hv someone u trust to help u out.
