bakusensei - my gym central is the PG i attended with the highest english standard. 3 instructors per class; all native speakers; 50% r actually gwai po. 100% English speaking + the kids (70% foreigners). vs the hunghom center would be more local.

I'm also looking for some playgroup for my son. Regarding my gym center in Central. Is there have any trail class. would you mind let me know the contact number then I can take my son to try this. But I heard from other mami said that the queue for trail class is very long. Is that true?

Can any mama share some of yr experiences and comments about playgroup. My son is now enrolling Kindyroo which has quite a lot of physical activities. The term is almost ended soon. I am thinking whether stick w/Kindyroo for one more term or transfer to other playgroup. Some mamas hv gd comments on my gym. Is my gym similar to Kindyroo? Is that a gd idea to let bb under 1 enrolling languag pg like beaumont?

there's a waiting list for the trial class, in my case i waited for 4 mths. if you prefer to go at weekend, maybe the wait could be a little longer.

i'd recommend to put your name down on waiting list & try it out to see if your son likes it.

My friend whose daughter is still studying in Beaumont for French advised that around a yr before, the centre got two English teachers from Oxford who r v. gd. But they ve left the centre already. She hasn’t tried the English course there and doesn’t ve friends tried it. Thus, can’t provide comments. She reiterated that the French course there is v. gd.

I shared my experience in MMB w/ her and she advised that Kindermusik by Catherixx in central should be the best in HK re. kid’s music course (She is major in music). But she advised that there is no need to rush for music course. Can wait after 1 or 1.5yr. Her daughter quitted TT at 1.5yrs and went to Kindermusik by Catherixx for half a yr. She is 5.5 yrs old now and is learning three musical instruments.

I have also chatted w/ her about my gym. Her daughter is not active and thus she has not tried any gym class. But she advised that she has friends trying both centres and found the instructors in HK side are better than the Kowloon side (I guess it explained why the waiting list in HK side is so long but u can easily enroll the trial class in the Kowloon side)

bakusensei - thx for your comprehensive update. i agree with you on the music classes, i find 9 mth is a little too young, as steamball suggested, they can't sing a long so less fun.

i personally really enjoy my gym in central, i also have a good work out in the class everyweek holding my bb from one ride to the next. i now go in gym gear & treat it as a gym session for myself!!!

had a trial class at kindermusik by catherine when lucas was 5 mths. he was far too young, would give it a go when he's older.

what's your view on language classes? what's a good age to introduce english/mandarin/cantonese classes to babies?

Thanks for your information first and I already help my son to make the appointment on next Sat but they only have one class in the morning (9:15 to 10:15am) and this is mixed class (will have bigger baby in the same class). Are you join this class too? Or they have another class can join?

cyclamen - not at all.... we go to the sat 9:15am class. it's a mixed class. i can give you an overview. there're about 8 babies/toddlers, 5 of them are toddlers ie walking. only my bb & 2 newcomers who are 6 mths old.

there're pros & cons with mixed groups.

cons
- can't socialise with the toddlers, cos they will be wanderng around the gym. so stationery babies stay together.

pros
- activities/rides for this group are more exciting (ie ging). my boy gets a thrill out of all these rides. (got it from me ithink, i love roller coasters!!!)
- things they do at tiny tykes classes r too baby.

so u coming this sat? look forward to seeing you this week. dont' forget your camera!!!

Except my gym, which playgroup you tried before? I also want to try kinderU in CWB but my friend said is not suitable for too young baby because the group more focus to make the baby study.

re. your question about when to introduce a second language, my views is as follows:

if u introduce more than 1 language to the baby, the baby will speak later. my impression from reading books and observing friends, friends' kids and even my cousins r, the more language u introduced, the later the speaking stage (of course it varies among kids as some other factors r also affecting the speaking stage:
e.g. girl or boy, the language "sense" of the kid, the exposure (i.e. whether parents/caretaker speaks a lot, etc). but as we will most likely ve maids in home, the baby will ve the exposure of 2 languages at least.

as the learning curve of language in babies are rather slow in the first stage (some study said the first 500 words), but will sharply increase afterwards. I would consider it better to keep the languages to 2 or 3 at most in the present stage to avoid further delay of the speaking stage.

Once the baby can cope w/ the languages he/she is "learning", if u can provide an env't of the 3rd/4th/5th... language to him/her, u can consider introducing that to him/her. from my observation, I guess 2.5-3yr is a gd age to start this exposure but better not later than the age of 6.

On the other hand, if u don't mind the delay of speaking stage and u can provide an env't of the third/fourth/.......language at the present stage, it's gd to introduce now as studies said synapse for identifing different sounds will be removed starting from the 8 month (i.e baby will decrease his ability to distingush sounds not familar starting from his 8 months)

re. env't, studies showed that the baby can only learn thr interaction but not simply listening to CDs or watching DVDs. i know friends learning the 4th language (apart from cantonese, english, mandarin) before 1. they all ve parents speaking that 4th language (e.g. french/german)

ven't tried KinderU but know that kinderU is using the right mind concept introduced by Dr. Doman in USA. His theory suggested the earlier the baby got involved in the flash cards, the effect will be greater. thus, if u buy the theory, early exposure should be better.

If u r interested in the right mind training, u may wish to read Dr. Doman's series of bks like "how to teach your baby to read". and to ve effects, u ve to flash the cards at home daily with the baby too.

I m too lazy and give up already. :p

agree with your friend, kindermusik is good, but now suitable for too young bb, i think at least 1.5 yrs old also
