Dear bbcathe,

This Dr. whom you went to have the ultrasound with; is he/she your IVF/FET doctor, or just an outside general-practice?

The gestational week count is a very rough estimation of "embryo age". In natual conception, a woman won't even know she's pregnant until 8 weeks or more. So, for IVF/FET cases, if you go to a general doctor for an ultrasound scan, the machine is quite often not very sensitive to pick up early fetal cardiac activity. Based on your day of FET and the scan days, you are not quite wk 6 yet (as of Nov 1). I would suggest to wait a few more days and scan again.

If the ultrasound scan is done by your IVF/FET doctor, then I suppose he/she may have already advised you the next step you should take.

Let me know. I kind of wish that you have gone to a general doctor and simply got a false alarm.

Dear bbcathe,

Thanks. The ultrasound is done by my FET Dr. The embryo is a 蘘胚 when I put it in. The Dr told me to do the ultrasound again next week. I know that in natual conception, many people can't check the heart beat in 6week. How abt for FET?
Anyway, I can only wait for next week. Thanks.

Dear bbcathe,

Same way of counting gestational weeks both in natural conception and IVF/freshET/FET.

Another clue we may get is from your HCG level. But if there hasn't been a blood test done, don't worry about it because we need to compare a previous HCG level (e.g. on the day of bingo) to another one on another day (e.g. on the ultrasound day). So, still have to wait till next week to get a much better idea.

Good luck and try to relax in the mean time, there is not much you can do but stay optimistic.

Hello ahMeow,

Welcome to this forum. No particular must's or must-not's from me. Before treatment, I usually recommend a better quality of life:

1. What to eat & what not-to-eat:
a. Moderation is the key; you know where to strike the balance. Keep healthy eating habits generally, but eating "junk food" once in a while and in small amounts won't harm.
b. Stay away from cigarettes and second-hand smoke. I drink coffee myself and it is hard to tell people not to, but keep it in check so I never have more than 2 cups a day. For alcohol, depending on what you drink (e.g. beer, red wine, spirits), just taste it but do not do over 2 drinks per week.
c. Multivitamins and folates (folic acid) are generally recommended, whether you intend to get pregnant or not. For your hubby, I am not the expert, but vitamin B12, vitamin C, folic acid may help sperm quality.

2. Lifestyle:
a. Moderate exercises please, again, whether you intend to get pregnant or not. Just do exercises that can make you sweat; 1-2 hours per week is not a big ask, is it? Exercises improve cardiovascular function, i.e. better blood circulation. This will help to detoxify your body and oxygenate your sexual organs (ovaries, uterus, testis) so your eggs and sperm will grow in a healthier environment.
b. If you are overweight, reduce a few pounds won't hurt. This is actually very important in women being overweight (for Chinese women, BMI >23 may consider reducing 3-5 pounds).
c. Get enough rest.
d. If you don't have blocked tubes and your hubby has reasonable sperm, keep trying the natural way until your IVF treatment officially begins.
e. Support each other, talk things out.

3. Be positive and optimistic:
a. Many couples think that IVF is the ultimate treatment; however, it still has limitations and it does not guarantee a baby. Think it through on both the financial and emotional burden you may need to bear. Keep an open mind.
b. Talk to your doctor/nurse/embryologist along the process when you are in doubts. Friends or jm's here are good to talk to, but some of the medical information circulated in among jm's may not be accurate. Don't scare yourselves by reading other people's fear; there is no stupid question unless it is not asked.

Good luck!

Thx Cutecutetown

we have been taking FertilAid....but we are to lazy to workout, the only workout, maybe is shopping at wkends, does that count, hahaha

my hubby's Morphology is 1%, Motility is 20%, anything you think can help improve beside exercise? is it really true that eating less meat helps improve the quality?

Dear ahMeow,

Shopping.... as long as you both enjoy the process, it won't hurt. I know many of us have plenty of excuses not to exercise, but just try, 1-2 hours/week is not that hard to achieve. Besides, you may want to consider taking a walk after dinner. Depending on the speed you walk, even if it doesn't get you to sweat, it helps digestion and then you can go to bed earlier; this leads to more rest, which of course is good.

While eating too much meat may not be good in general (due to the extra fat intake), both men and women should have some good-quality proteins in their diet. For vegetarians, they can get their proteins from soy and diary products. For general people, we can have some lean meat, i.e. avoid fatty beef, pork ribs, chicken skin; lean meat is usually the "least tasty" meat, such as chicken breast or beef/pork with most fats trimmed off. Our other protein sources can come from milk, yogurt, eggs, soy, beans and peas. So indeed, if you hubby is a meat lover, try to cut back some of his meat and take these other protein sources.

Sperm quality is affected by possibly genetics, as well as lifestyle and environmental factors. By "improving" what he eats and how he lives, I still can't guarantee a much-better-quality sperm, but I am sure the quality won't go any worse either.

Dear ahMeow,

Since you are both young, the success chance is relatively high. I dare not to quote you a percentage, because it does vary depending on a lot of factors such as age, years of infertility, whether you have been pregnant before, sperm factor, female factor, etc etc etc.

Chance of a twin pregnancy -- you will need to ask your doctor for a percentage. Sometimes, the decision can be based on the quality of the 2 embryos on the transfer day and you don't have to decide so soon. Usually, for your age and being a first-time IVF, my centre will recommend one embryo only. I can culture to day 5 blastocyst stage to find an embryo with good potential. However, some doctors or labs do not like day 5. Just my opinion only, you may try to put 1 embryo this very first time. I am sure you will have extra embryos to freeze; so, if you don't succeed right on this attempt, you may then consider putting 2 embryos back in your FET cycle.

Or wait a minute, do you want twins thinking that it saves you time for 2 children?? I hope not. In any case, discuss with your doctor or even the embryologist to find out what is the best for you. Once you start your IVF cycle, it will be easier to decide step-by-step because decisions can be based on how you respond to the stimulation and also how the embryos develop. For now, just have a very sketchy plan so that you are well informed of the possible options.

Dear lollybb,

Sorry to hear your discomfort. You may want to call your ivf doctor to see if you need a visit to the clinic.

I am a little confused on your 安胎針 injection. You said you received it on day0, day4. When did you know that your ivf failed? Are you starting on a new ivf cycle now and that's why you are receiving 安胎針 again???

thanks CCT....my hubby think since we want two anyways we might as well try to have two bbs....but i had read that twin pregnancy can be dangerous for the BBs, such as that they will not grow.....is that true?

I got to remember to ask that question when I see my doc again in Jan

Dear lollybb,

Perhaps your ovaries are recovering from the egg retrieval puncture wounds, or maybe you have very minor inflammation inside your peritoneum (the space between the organs & intestines inside your tummy)?

If the problem persists, do not hesitate to tell your ivf doctor because the clinic has your recent detailed record; you may also go to a general family doctor if there is pain.

Hope you will get better soon.

回覆:ivf Q & A

wow I am a newbie!! Many pages to finish the reading, I have read 10 pages but I guess I can't wait to ask cutecutetown

Cutecutetown,
I had a bad experience which is still making me very sad at times!!

my Hubby's sperms are bad in terms of quality, quantity, motility, and 形態!

Back to few years ago, I saw a gynae because of irregular and heavy menstruation blood! since he knew I wanna try to conceive, so he prescribed me clomid! At the end I took clomid for about 20 cycles! During the clomid treatment, I was pregnant once but unfortunately I lost it around 1.5 weeks after I got a positive pregnancy test result!! I guess it could not successfully implanted!

I was unhappy because I didn't know and was not informed by the gynae about the side effect of clomid! all other gynae dr and fertility doctors told me that no one would prescribe more than 10-12 cycles to patients! And I so hate the gynae I saw!!!! Did my ovary over-stimulate? does it mean I have higher risk of getting cancer??

Once I found out his mistake I immediately stopped seeing him :(

I am going to do the first ivf+icsi coming April, I have been hesitating whether I should go for it because I already had more than enough stimulation to my ovaries because of over taken clomid!!

Can u give me some advices on this matter!?? Appreciate it much!!

thank you

回覆 confusedme 的帖子

hello confusedme,

I sympathize for you. Hopefully your ~20 cycles of clomid would not affect your long-term health. Clomid is just a very low-dose stimulation compared to those given in IVF.

I assume you have already seen a fertility doctor, with whom you will do ivf+icsi in April? Please bring up your concern at your next visit to him/her to relieve your anxiety. General gynae doctors are not specializing in fertility treatment; so, my feeling is that they still try to help, but tend to be on the conservative side. Fertility doctors, on the other hand, come from gynae background and some of them are more "aggressive" in recommending treatment because they see patients with fertility difficulties all the time.

I think if you choose to undergo ivf+icsi, you should do it as soon as possible. Good luck.

Dear littleantant,

The indication on Clearblue is based on the amount of HCG present in a urine sample. The kit itself is intended for checking bingo in natural conception. Pregnancies from IVF tend to be checked earlier than it should and also the hormone level is often higher than natural.

If you have transferred more than 1 embryo in your FET or if you have got 安胎針, hcg level will be higher than "normal". 葡萄胎 is relatively rare; unless you have had it before, I won't go about worrying 葡萄胎 when having a Clearblue of 3+. Relax and see if your doctor will soon schedule an ultrasound for you.
