Cathy2002,

yes, most preschools in here are private. there're some public preschools but usually they're for the low-income families.
starting from kindergarten (5 yrs old, only 1 yr for kindergarten), most people send kids to public schools. in general, public schools give more "freedom" to kids. however, some private schools are very strict.
at my boy's preschool, the kids have to sit at their own name tag (although on the floor) with their arms and legs crossed when the teacher is teaching (starting the age of 2). and they'll get warning labels if misbehave.
for another private preschool we've visited, those kid would be kicked out if they hit others the second time and bite others the first time. the principal said biting is unacceptable starting from the age of 2 yrs and 9 months as only infants who cannot talk to express themselves would bite.

that's why u can only see mostly Asian and very few white kids at the top private schools.

Are you saying most white kids get kicked out for biting and hitting? How many kids can actually move onto the next year then? That's what kids do!

On the east coast the private schools have predominantly Jewish and Asian students. Mostly because they can afford lor!

MegumiSan,

no, actually i think the white parents don't like to send their kids to those "strict" schools. they like the more relaxing preschool enviornment instead.
when my boy just switched to the current preschool from the previous one, he's not well adjusted and got a lot of complaints at the very beginning. the previous preschool he went to was more relaxing and there were a lot more black and white kids (but a bit too far from where we lived). a few of our chinese friends said his current school was good so we switched as it's closer to where we live.

anyway, the major populations in bay area CA are Asians (mainly chinese and indians) and Hispanics. and majorities are always Asians at the top public and private schools. same as the Asians and Jewishs in NY and NJ areas.

by the way, yr girl is so cute!

SY_mom,

Yes, a lot of Jewish, Koreans in the county where i went to school. Not so much Chinese population while I was there, and for the few who were there, they were all 讀書精。

It's all about 近朱者赤。 The 老華橋s who've lived there all their lives make it a career to bring up geniuses. And they always share notes on how to raise kids when they hang out at church or whatever...

Apparently my mom didn't hang out with any of them.....

You probably have a very smart boy boy too? Cuz you quit your job to be a full time mom?

P.S. The baby with the blue hat is Ryan. He was a cute baby too.

MegumiSan,

well, i didn't quit my job voluntarily. i was given a laid-off notice right before i started my maternity leave. i guess my manager thought it might be difficult for me to do the travelling part (being a consultant) when i have kid. so he just took advantage of the workforce restructuring program after the merger and added my name to the one of the 15,000 people on the being-laid-off list.

anyway, even though i wasn't laid off, it would be hard for me to continue the consulting career since i have kid. and it's hard to have a good and stable nanny in here. well, time flies ... my son just turned 4 few months ago (his b-day is very closed to yr little girl's). hopefully i can prepare my mind going back to work soon as the job market is good now.

so how long u've been back to Macau/HK?

i thought both babies in the two pictures were the same person, coz i didn't know u're posting the baby picture of yr son.

You're right! It's next to impossible to find a good nanny in the US.

又expensive. 又唔stay in. And take both Sat and Sunday off.

One good thing about raising kids in Macau is that I can afford helpers.

That's why I have so much respect for US moms because they do themselves all the parenting, cleaning, running chores... D屋又大好多所以亦都要抹多好多地方。

My hb and I have been back 5 years lah! Yeah time flies.

As rye rye and hei hei get older I will also be considering going back so that they can enjoy less stressful schooling.

When do you think is a good time for you go to back to work? The job market should be looking much better then when I left... which was after 911...
