her english teacher at school trained her 3 times and I was her private trainer at home. She has the advantages of being the member of the choir, i.e. the voice.

BTW, to my surprise, my girl got a distinction in her Grade 5 theory. 92 marks. Never dreamed about it as she started her theory class in Aug, just 2 months before the exam.

We have rec'd the result yesterday and Rachel got 88 marks. We have used 8 weekends during the summer holidays to go over the 5 booklets and the pass papers.

Thanks very much. Congrats to R as well. You know I said to my girl that a pass is enough as she just needs it for her future practical exams.

Hi KL,

I have never learned music theory before, so know nothing about it. I went to a few studios near our living place. But none except Parson's Music dared to accept my girl. They all said that just 2 months were not enough. I have expressed that I just wanted a pass. But still they did not want to take my girl.

I enrolled my girl for the one-on-one class. I know no particular teachers, so just up to Parson's to arrange. 1 hour each lesson. $295 per hour.

My girl is lucky this year and got a good harvest so far. Now waiting for her piano practical exam. Again, I do not expect too much as her original teacher just left a month before her exam.

I need to plan better for my son. My son can't be as adaptive as his sister.

Would you pls tell how does the music theory exam go e.g. how many parts, syllabus, how long is the exam, how many marks in each part, marks for disctinction/merit/pass etc

GN4, KL,

We were also looking for a 'Pass' only. We have underestimated the timing required for the preparation of this exams. I kicked off teaching Rachel during Saturdays in July and August, however, we were so occupied starting from Sep and she finally had the chance the past paper only a week before the exams.

The duration of the exams is 2 hours and most of them will leave the school hall once they have finished checking the paper. Rachel has taken half an hour to do the paper and 20 mins for checking since she needed to rush to attend the HKCC group training on that day.

The exams will have almost 10 sections, writing scales, cadences, transposition of scores, composing melody, intervals etc etc.

The full mark is 100, the passing mark of 66. 90 above : Distinction and 80 above : Merits.

Just let me know if you need the past papers and we can pass it to you anytime.

Thanks for the detailed info.

The music theory exam is not easy! So much to teach and so much to learn....

Kv is going to take his G4 violin exam in Apr next year and after that I want him to take music theory if possible.

May I borrow your past papers/books pls?

Quite surprised again because she got a lot of her form mates or class mates in the same competition. A few are PTH mother tongues as well, but didn't win.

I think she's quite lucky recently. Yes, has to buy her something. Will bring her along to choose after the exam. She is having her exam now.

One thing about the School Speech Festival is one cannot be too serious about the results. It is not a really fair game, as far as I observe over the years. 有奬的話,固之然開心,無奬的話,也不用難過,未必是自己做得唔好,而可能是一個評判主觀的看法. 我都見唔少鬼佬評判挫強扶弱的做法.

Piglet went for his session yesterday pm, and got 82 marks. Ok considering that he refused to practise. Really practised for only 1 night + 1 day (yesterday just before the session). And soooo lazy that he refused to move his mouth more, ==> not all s, t, d,... came out well.

And the adjudicator found 1 lazy point which I missed : for th sounds (throw, the), piglet does not put tip of tongue on front teeth, ==> only uses "f" sound to substitute, cos he wanted the easy way out. When I practised I just stood far away ==> didn't see where his tongue went !

The adj in Luk Kwok Hotel Falcon Rm stresses on facial expression, which piglet didn't have time to manage.

(should more correctly say : didn't give himself the time to manage !)

And for the other kids, 1st = 91 marks (from Canadian Intl), 2nd - 90 marks, 3rd = 89 marks, 1 each.

The afterwards the kids collected the mark sheets and went over to their mums, I heard a kid said to his mum "頂佢個x丫, ....."

This is a local kid, not Big6 at all, and local mum ! Local mum didn't say anything. Another mum next to me heard it too and took a look at the kid. I think the kid is from WY tim but not sure.

As for the Engl teachers, you will be amazed at how bad some can be :
the subject was "The Shooting Stars",
shooting became many other things : "sitting", "sooting", and 1 even said "shxtting" !

Then there was a line "Staring up at the vast cosmos", some kids from 1 - 2 schools kept on saying "starring" up !
I bet their teacher(s) taught them how to pronounce the word, and obviously didn't know the word "stare" at all !

No eye see, if the Engl of Engl teachers is sooooooooo bad !

82 marks is already quite well provided that he had just practised for such a short period of time.

btw, the standard of some eng teachers is really terrible!!

Hope these are just isolated cases.

Though it's quite common to hear "頂佢個x丫" in HK, I would feel bad if the words are coming out of a kid's mouth, no matter he is from elite school or not!

Recently I find classmates of Kv like to 作詞 to make fun, such as:

x 詩詠，
以為自己好有型，
搾住 Benz 去露營，
人人當佢係異型

xxx，
食雞肶，
冇錢俾，
以為減緊肥....

Frankly speaking, the same happened when I was a primary school kid too! So I still can accept these provided 唔好作得太過份 and no foul language.

No matter what, this is good achievement of piglet. >80 is already merit. Congratulations!! If my boy got >80, I will be very very very happy already.

Not REALLY pronounciation, clear voice + proper pron except that the d/t/s/st/ts all becomes blurred. If piglet can forget about making min effort and instead make max effort, the world would be a much better place (for me at least) !

Good try for Piglet. We had the competition at the Falcon room of Luk Kwok also. The adjudicator is a female lady, name Pxxxxx, will it be the same as yours ?
She emphasized on the expression too.
Lucky that Rachel's class teacher did stress the 'th' sounds. The title of the poem 'Auntie Betty thinks she's batgirl'.
