Crying when nursing

Breastfeeding mummies, I would like to know if your babies cry before and during nursing. My 7 weeks old had been doing this since 4 weeks old. She is hungry but will cry and push me away when I give her my breast. It will take me a long time to calm her and then she will eat a little but will cry again and won't eat... does anyone else's baby do the same too? What can I do to stop her from doing that? Sometimes she will eat for 2-3 mins and then cry and won't latch on and I have to burp her (most time no burps) and offer her the other breast and the same thing will happen. Sometimes I have to switch breasts 3-4 times for a 10 mins feed. I am so upset about it. :cry:

maybe it's a slow letdown problem. she may grow impatient when milk doesnt flow immediately.

try expressing a little milke before picking her up, so that she can get what she wants when she starts to suck.

dj.hkhk. it is not that problem, my letdown is very strong. The problem is also she will cry before latching on....

有時出奶勁果頭食唔切都會喊，我bb就是這情況。如你都是這情況，你可 i 後d餵，d奶出得慢d。
再唔係，番健康院問姑娘都得架

the same happens to my baby (now 11wk) sometimes. to her, it's always the problem of gas: whether to be passed out thro' the upper outlet or the lower one. she won't calm down until the gas has passed out.

to help her, i'll burp her on my shoulder (face down and tummy touching my shoulder). sometimes the gas that cannot be burped out will pass out thro' the lower outlet :lol: .

as you say, you have strong let-down. then why bother changing the breast you offer? if changing too frequently the baby will drink a lot of foremilk. it's high lactose content will produce more gas in the intestine.

係呀, 如果你都覺得自己的奶出得快, 而且你話bb一latch on 啜兩啖已經喊, 好可能係你的奶噴得太多/快, 佢吞唔切.
除了可以試下peaceaa1122 講的方法"埃"後d (可以用cushion斜斜地long到45度"埃"後), 另外又可以考慮試下泵/擠走部份前奶, 等d奶無出得咁急. (不過睇另一條thread有媽咪話健康院的姑娘話前奶先有抗體

, 所以唔好泵/擠走)

Thank you for your inputs. I have tried leaning back but she still cries... also I don't want to switch breasts so often/soon but she will not latch on again to the one she latched off, but will latch on to the other one... so now sometimes it is left breast 3 mins, cry, burp her, right breast 3 mins, cry, burp her, left breast 2 mins etc etc... The problem also is that I will not have let down if I pump... the let down only happens when she is latched on, so even if I pump before she eats I don't think it is going to help. I have read from other websites and this is called 'nipple/ breast refusal', this is so difficult for me, so upsetting as I am offering the best thing I can give despite the fact that it is so restricting for me to not go out as much but she is rejecting me....... :-( :-(

唔好意思, 我埋身餵的經驗尚淺. 我想問你點樣知道bb埋身食有let down? 是自己有感覺的嗎?

amypekkle, I know that let down occurs (usually within 10 seconds of baby's sucking) when I feel a sensation on both nipples, everyone's let down feels different but mine is like someone pulling a rubber band in my nipple which will last for about 3 seconds. Then milk will start leaking on the non-nursing breast and I can hear my baby swallowing big amounts on the other side.

so full time pumping mummies do not have let downs?

please don't feel rejected by your baby. keep reminding yourself: she's too young to "reject" (emotionally) any person. she's just adapting to this new type of nutirition intake (compared to the situation in your womb) --- otherwise you'll get discouraged and upset easily.

my baby used to "reject" my left breast. she wouldn't even touch it. as soon as i held her towards that breast, she'd cried fiercely. i "knew" that's "because the milk supply of that breast is poor". people said i shouldn't allow her to be like that but they couldn't imagine how hard i had already tried. this "habbit" caused quite some inconveniences in my nursing experience (not to mention the imbalance in the sizes of the two breasts!!) (but i kept pumping the "rejected" breast)

BUT things changed suddenly recently. two weeks ago i learnt to use a new nursing pose and i tried to put my baby on the left breast using that pose. BINGO! this time she didn't reject. from that day on(when my baby is almost 10 week old!) i am able to use both of the two breast to nurse her!

she'll now suck from the left breast for over 15 min and fall asleep with satisfaction.

i share this with you and hope that you won't give up or feel upset when you baby struggle to get your nipple out of her mouth. she's just adapting (just like what you're trying to do) to find the most comfortable way oif eating. Keep on doing the thing you know which is good for your baby and at the same time be sensitive to her need. don't blame the baby and , don't blame yourself. things WILL CHANGE!!

納奧美, thank you so much for your kind words. Yes it feels very sad and I am trying not to take it personally. Now if she doesnt want to eat then I won't force her, may be she had enough and is not hungry. I will hang in there and hope to breast feed her to at least 6 months.
