A lot of people think that they ovulate on the 14th day of their cycle but the truth is that each person has her own cycle. It doesn't necessarily mean you ovulate on the 14th day. The best way to find out your ovulation day is by taking your basal body temperature and to check your cervical fluid everyday. Take your basal body temperature means you have to take your temperature everyday at the same time before you get up from the bed to do anything (not even to go to toilet). Then you should observe your cervical fluid because usually before your ovulation, your cervical fluid tends to go very strechy and slippery like egg white. it is the best time to have sex when your cervical fluid is at the optimal quality. Keep trying until your basal body temperature rises which means you have already ovulated.
it is hard to explain everything here but there is a very good book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. You should be able to find everything you need to know about your cycle and how to find out your ovulation date. It is a very well written book and a best seller.
