My relative's former helpler always used her mobile phone on the street (shopping) and also at home!
So, my relative prohibits her present helper to use mobile phone.
However, the helper wants to use mobile phone to send message to her home (cheaper than IDD) and she agrees to let her mum to keep her mobile phone on working days and just uses it on holidays. What's your opinion?
It's reasonable. Just return it to her on Sunday morning. That's the fact that the cost for sending SMS is cheaper than IDD's. It's popular in Philippines.

littlefatfish, your suggestion may be good but as good as for those maids that are good. I guess once you allow them to keep the mobile phone and talk at work, they will be totally out of control because it is their character like other things, say talking in the street, talking in the garden while taking care of kids, so better say no at the start to avoid any further argument. Accept it or quit the job.

I have similar experience before and perhaps I shared with you how i dealt with it. I did not allow my maid to possess mobile phone. However i suspect her possessing mobile phone as my smaller boy pretending making phone calls from time to time when I was home. Also, my maid made the same request as your maid about releasing my no to her family receiving sms. I told her that my mobile phone no cannot be released to her family but (to show concern) asked how she could get her sms if without mobile phone. She lied to me that her friends got mobile phone for this purpose and she could use her friend's if necessary. I told her that it was not so direct and does not address for urgent situation. Then she asked whether she could got a mobile phone herself. I knew what she was getting at but pretend and asked her more questions on how to buy mobile phone. She seemed to get the wrong message that i allowed her to possess mobile phone and admit that indeed she had mobile phone already. I asked to look and after she showed her mobile phone, I said that I would allow her using mobile phone only on day off. For other days, I will keep it but in the event that there are any urgent sms from her family. I will let her know. Of course, for the first few days, nearly every hour the phone rings. I turned off to silent mode and after two weeks or so, no more calls.
I dont know why maids are always like this. They try to get all the advantages but do not work hard.
