Hi,

I will travel alone with my 8 months old baby (24 lbs) to HK next Saturday. I will take Cathy Pacific. Do anyone have experience about flying alone with BB on CX flight? What i have to prepare for him? Any tips about traveling on plane (esp with a HEAVY baby)?

My bb is too heavy and I had taken him on 3 hours flight while he was 5 months (22lbs) old with his Dad. He was napping on me (I'm 104 lbs) at flight. After trip, I can't move and feel pain on my back after traveling. I am very scared to travel with him alone on the coming Sat.

This May, I traveled with Terence BB alone on the 16-hour flight. He was 8.5-month and weighed 21 pounds at that time. My suggestions are:

1. request bulkhead seat & bassinet --- probably your baby could still fit in. Terence BB was just fit and he took two 30-minute nap in there (better than nothing lar, at least i could go to the bathroom and stretch a bit). also, it's easier to move in and out of your seat;

2. bring infant carrier --- very likely your baby would want you to walk around, so it's better to use the carrier than holding him with bare hands;

3. bring ready to feed formula and water --- notify the airport security that you need to feed your baby with the boiled cold water. tell them that your baby can't take water other than that. they will then check it and likely let you bring on board; also, bring your baby's favorite snacks and toys (a few new and small toys are good to distract him)

4. give pacifier or feed your baby when the plane takes off and lands --- to reduce ear discomfort

5. when arriving the waiting area for boarding, notify the CX staff that you travel with your baby, they will then let you board the plane first;

if you would like the bulkhead seat, call CX reservation service. they might give you the discretion to reserve the bulkhead seat and bassinet. Also, you can request baby meal.

hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for your informations.

Right now, I am still nursery my bb; sometimes I breastfeed him, sometimes, I have to pump milk out for him. I just wonder if I have to pump the milk out. Can i do it on my bulkhead seat.

Did you handcarry a suitcase on plane? I worried that it's very trouble if I bring him with a handcarry suitcase. Or you suggest me only bring backpack?

Thanks,
Sam

I think bulkhead seat is still easier, as it will give you more space (nobody sits in front of you ar mar) ... and if your baby is willing to sleep in the bassinet for a while, then you can pump ... btw, will you buy a seat for your baby?

I brought backpack and diaper bag on board ... you can put the bags in front of you if you are in the bulkhead seat ... it's only during take off and land that you have to put the bags in the cabinet above ... but don't worry, the crew will come to do that for you ... so, with the bags placed in front of me during the flight, i can easily access the bags and take things out for my baby

you are welcomed!!!

wish you and your baby have a safe and enjoyable flight!

just in case you can't find nice people to help you at the baggage claim area in HK airport, there's porter service that can pick up lugguages for you ... seems to be HK$30/piece ... they can then take the lugguages and go with you to the carpark/public transportation terminal/airport express station

you can make it ... good luck!!!

In my case, I am purchasing thru studentuniverse as I am a student and they don't show up if any child traveling with you on their website as if you go with a infant. So we have to call the airlines to inform them I'm with an infant and they charges separate costs on my credit card.

Some of website like "Cheap Ticket" will have an icon asking you wether you have a child travel with you. If so, I believe you may not need to call airlines. I see most of website they are selling ticket will ask you whether you travel with a child ( whether he/she is < 2 or >2).

i bought the ticket through the travel agent, so she did everything for me ... in fact, i didn't request a bulkhead seat at that time of purchase ... of course you need to mention that your baby will travel with you, as you have to pay for her ticket no matter it's infant or child fare ... no free ride these days lar

my suggestion is see how heavy and tall your baby is by the time of traveling ... if he/she is not a big baby, probably can fit and you can then call up the airline and request ... anyway, if your baby is big, he/she doesn't feel comfortable inside

It's pretty rare...my sister reserved it for my nephew who was 18-month-old at that time. He actually was big for that bassinet and we had once put him in it. He woke up and found it not his bed, he cried and refused to sleep in it any more. How big is your baby? There's a weight limit, I believe. Bulkhead seat is good for passenger with infant because of the extra space. However, it's usually on higher demand (as well as the bassinet). If you cannot get a bulkhead seat, at least, get the one next to aisle so that you can get up and sit down more often when you baby and you need some space to stretch.

babytomato,

I booked tickets directly from the airline websites several times and managed to get quite good deals. Have you decided which month you would go to HK? Usually, ticket price would be relatively lower after CNY before April 1 and in Sep or Nov. You can check the prices for these lower seasons. I also found that CX is usually cheaper than SQ. Of course, sometimes, UA or NW or JL would be lower in price but not absolute. For you to bring a baby along, I won't suggest transfer flight in case that direct flight won't be much more expensive when you count the hassles and the total travelling time.

we're planning to go in feb or march after CNY, baby will be 9 or 10 months... my husband has points with united so we'll probably use them although their aircrafts are usually old and food is nasty.

rose-mag,

My bb is 24.5 lbs and 8 months 2 weeks old; I double checked CX website, their bassinet can support bb who is under 26 lbs. So I've called CX again and flight for bassinet and I reminded him that my bb is within the weight, and he finally allowed me to make a reservation for bassinet; but the guy said ppl at check-in area will double check his size, if my bb is over. I am not able to have the bassinet on plane. Think ppl work in CX probably is so strict. I am flying tmw evening. Hope everything will run smooth.

I have to take connection flight at Los Angeles as I just moved to Las Vegas a month ago. The worst thing is my return flight have to stay in Los Angles one night (land LA 11 pm) and my connection flight is next early morning 7 am. Airlines don't allow me check in my luggage until 4 am tmw. So I have to carry my luggage and bb together. I think I won't find a hotel for rest as I don't have ability to carry my bb and luggage. I probably will chose to sleep at Los Angeles airport. Hope it's safe.

CX serve Gerber baby food, so, there is no problem at all. They may not able to provide formula which your infant is taking, so you just prepare the formula.
extra plastic spoon for feeding, bibs, slippy cup for water, extra disposble drop-in liner, extra teats for your bottle (if you do the way like us, we use disposable system to save the space in the diaper bag, then we took 2 big bottles of ready to use)--not so sure if regulation changed.
extra wipes, they provided diaper, but I bring my own.
sure extra clothes, blankets, as it will be cold at the middle of the night inflight. toys, books which with soft music and quiet. extra pacifiers if your baby needs it
baby carrier is a must if you go alone without help.
Just in case, take your infant carseat with you, so if they are not full, you got a spot to leave your infant safety if you are not going to buy a seat for your infant.
CX restrict-- infant must be 6months and below and under 26lbs. therefore. even infant under 26lbs but over 6 months, they may not allow you to use the bassinet.
remember to reserve a staff for assistant.
I did that every time. a CX aircraft staff, assistant mami with infant for free. after we departure, a staff will assist you to take off, and then s/he will help you to push the trollwy with all your belongings in custom, push your luggage and stay with you until they see your family out there at the gate in the lobby for pick up.
as I took Amanda with me everytime. I requested it. when I get to the gate (US) they will give you a ticket, you have to hold it when you land in hk.
the staff will ask for the ticket when we meet the family who comes to pick up. they need to bring this ticket back to office and report that the client is safe, and pick up by someone in hk.

I flew to HK with my son alone in late May. CX serves Earth's Best baby food & juice. No formula will be provided. You definitely have to bring your own for that. On the way to USA, CX provides Heinz baby food & juice. They will also give you a few diapers, you have to call and reserve that (baby meal+diapers).

I did request for assistance when arriving in HK, but when I called for that, the staff said what I could do was to request the flight crew to do so. She didn't mention about reserving someone to assist me from leaving the plane to the arrival hall. I don't know if the policy has changed or just me with no luck about that. The result was that I have to hold my baby in the carrier and then put everything on the carseat and WALK!!! When arriving at the baggage claim, you can use the porter service who can pickup the luggage for you from the carousal and then to the place where you will take transportation. It's about HK$30/piece of luggage.

I requested it when I check it, and told them again when I arrived to the gate.
when I left aircraft, one of the air hoster helps me with my belongings, and went to the custom. then he check out thru employee area and I went thru normal pathway, afterthat, he took my broading pass to check luggage for me, and I just carried Amanda. (one time, I went back with my lived in nanny whom lives in Macau, she went to Macau, as I don't need her to stay with us in hk), the air hoster sent her to the pier center before we went to custom.
Then, after we collected our luggages, he helped me to fold the stroller, kept carseat on top of my luggage, and I carried Amanda with me, and we waited for my father to pick up outside, once he saw my family, he asked me for the ticket (the ticket kept with Amanda's check in gate stroller) and he left.
The last 2 times worked pretty well with that.
for my memories, it is true, the assistant is from the air cruise.
I did requested early check in, and baby meal, buckhead seat. but I have my carseat with me. as I bought the seat for Amanda.. as I knew that I can't carry that obese baby for 17 hours.
