my son has more than 30 VCDs, and I bought 10 more from the book fair, because he has watched the 30 VCDs for more than 1 year already. Though he has a lot of VCDs, I only allow him to watch 1 each day. What are you worried of?
My son is almost 5 and he has a series of different VCDs/DVDs, including:
1. Thomas the Tank Engine
2. Snoopy
3. Maisy
4. Bob the Builder
5. DWE & Zippy
6. Noddy
7. Thunderbird
8. Kids Song
9. 宮崎駿 Movies
10. 小百科
11. Disney's Movies
12. Pingu
He really enjoy watching these VCDs and the characters inside become his friends. Very often these characters give him some positive image...brave, polite, helpful. Also, he learns the accent and colloquial english.
I also select some 宮崎駿 movies for him like 再見螢火蟲, 小孤星. He loves them and he realises what the damages of war would bring, how the poor would suffer and that one most be strong and brave to face all sorts of problems. But what is important is that we must accompany them to watch this sort of movies.
Some people said if a child watch too much VCDs he may become too unidirectional in communicating. I also agree. So I won't let him watch VCDs all the time. Anyway sitting all the time infront of TV is not too good.
So I think whether there is too much VCDs depends on how much time you allow your child to watch them.
If 3yrs boy feel almost 20 vcds is too boring, it is a good chance for you to fade out all vcds, because even to watch TV over 45 mins a day is too much, you know TV programme is not interactive, even program is educational, kid is only receive infos, there is no creative at all.
I'll suggest you to encourage him to play Lego, trains, puzzles, painting etc, or read books, listen story from cds or from you, singing, etc.
