cookiegg,
OSCAR is a kind of screening rather than diagnosis like amniocentesis. It only tells you the probability of your baby having Down's Syndrome. The accuracy rate is about 90% and about 5% are of false postive results. It is a non-invasive method and there involves no risk of complication to the pregnancy. To supplement on CHERRYIEONG, medical practitioners no longer rely on age as in the past as the sole screening parameter. Rather they tend to conduct OSCAR or similar tests first and amniocentesis will only be conducted when the screening result indicates there is likely a high risk of chromosome abnormalities.
Taking OSCAR and amniocentesis are both gambles. For OSCAR, you gamble on the accuracy of the screening result whereas you risk miscarriage for amniocentesis. Which one is better really depends on where you want to place your bet.
