If you buy a house, you need to pay property tax each year. The tax is different depending which city you live in. Also you need to pay all the legal fee when you buy a house.
Beginning last summer, some of my HK friends (Canadian citizens) sent their kids (14 - 15 yrs old) alone to study grade 9 in Toronto area. Is there some problem with the education system (esp. in high school) in HK? I don't think it's good for the kids and families to separate especially when the kids are so young!
as far as I know, you have to declare non-residency before you leave in order to avoid the tax. Otherwise, you will have to pay no matter how long you have gone.
