Hi andtong,
I would suggest let him finish elementary in HK before coming here so that he can have a solid foundation in Chinese. Learning chinese here are difficult, though we have chinese classes. But once a week is not enough and therefore the canadian born chinese usually can speak chinese well, but read/write.
But if you may put him in International school in HK anyway, then there may be no difference.
BTW, are you a citizen here or not? I have not heard of visa students at age 3, so, not sure if that's possible anyway....
Hi andtong,
if you will "land" next year, then I guess you should stay here. Otherwise, getting the resident card and going back to HK is so troublesome. It is getting very strict here in terms of getting the citizenship.
I guess you can always get your BB to study here first and then go back to HK whenever you want to learn chinese.
You know, studying here or HK will always be trade-off. The BB will either be good in English (and so so in Chinese), or the other way.
Why do you think it's difficult to get the citizenship in Canada now? I'd also like to apply it with my family, pls advise. Thanks a lot.

The reason I said it is more strict, is because we now have something called the "residency card" or "maple leaf card" for those who landed, but still travel, or return to their original place. With the residency card, I guess the government now have better ways to determine if you have really stayed here for 3 years. Immigrants have to stay here for 3 years in order to apply for citizenship.
Unlike the old days, people sneak to Buffalo and go back to HK via the US etc. and pretend they are still in Canada.
I am not an expert in this field. Just from my understanding via my relatives.

Thanks for your reply. But when's good time for my kid to start studying in Canada? Coz my kid is now 1 year old and. What age does he need to study in kindergarden?
I personally think that the earlier the better. Kids learn very fast between 0-3 and therefore, the earlier they start, they will absorb better and faster.
Both my girls start toddler class at age 20 months, though this is not the common norm in Canada. I did it this way does not mean others have to do the same.
In Canada, public kindergarten starts at 4. But most people starts their kids at around 3. That means people either go to private kindergarten at age 3, or go to "daycare", which only have some educational components in their program.
In some good school, kids start to learn phonics at age 2. By age 4, they can read a simple story book and by age 5, they can write a story. So, I guess it depends on what you want for your child.
Hope this helps.
