As stated.

In Hong Kong, rumour spead lay off 1K staff for HSBC, 600+ for PCCW and some MNC firm has started the global cut as well.

As the Lehman Brother and the accelerator investment products sold in HK, many people affected by this.

Any affect in OZ?

These directly affected people I know:

David Jones cut 150 staffs -
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24942181-1702,00.html?from=public_rss
(my sister's brother in law lost his job, luckily he is in accounts so should be Ok to get another job)

Downturn also affected research & development - since these are areas which do not show an immediate $ return -
Optus has cut all contract staffs, most research & development projects are put on hold.
(I have a friend whose position is extended on a month to month basis - very difficult position for a single mum with a large mortgage)
(My brother in law has lost his job as his company could not find enough investments to continue their research, unforunately his area is too specialized for him to find another job easily)

Due to the drop in shares, my Mum-in-laws retirement funds have halfed - this meant she has to be careful to make the money last another 20 years.

Thanks sbandliz for the update :)

If David Jones cut, so as Grace Bros, Target....
No more Woolworth as I read the news they closed down before New Year. Those were the memories while my emmigration in OZ.

The atmosphere is not good in HK for the retail, as people are watch and see.

I guess if people work for financial related industry such as bank, investment bank, broker will be in high risk job while the retail must affect as people hold up their spending.

Hill Fire seems to be another big challenge in OZ too!

Talking about retirements funds, you know in HK we do have MPF or ORSO as the pension fund, we all lost a bit on this.

Woolworth is still going strong.

The feeling here is that supermarkets should be fine because people still need to eat. It is the other retail stores that are doing it tough (Myer, David Jones, Harvey Norman etc) as people are cutting back on non-food items when their budgets are tight.

Yes, we have all taken a big hit on our superannuation funds. For us, it meant we need to work harder & longer to save up again; but for people who have already retired (like my mum-in-law), they can only make what money they have left stretch a lot further.

No more Grace Bros, they called Myer since few years ago.

Woolworth UK is closed, not the one in OZ.

Thanks Sbandiz and Mrs. Kangaroo. I haven't back to OZ for quite some time and don't know GB has changed to Myer.

Then Woolworth is going strong in OZ, a different brand separate from UK since it's closed?

Read from the news, the staff of the ex-Woolworth has re-hired the 22 staffs and named Wellworths, the new shop to open in mid March.

Although universities are government funded, but as our government cut back on their financial support over the years, universities are becoming more dependant on incomes from overseas students and corporate support.
