Yes, all kids must have car seat and you will get a ticket if you get got by police. Besides, it is safer to have car seat since the normal seat belt is tailor made for adult only.

if your friends are local, they should know the rules that all children require car seat. I saw somewhere in newspaper long time ago has car seat rental, but I think it is better to buy one. Just ask your friends about it. Or I know many Chinese they just ignore the rules and take the chance for not having car seat. It is similar to not putting seat belt and all these are against the law here. Buying a brand new car seat is around $100 + and depends on how old is your child.
If you are taking taxi, then no car seat requires, but if you are driving your own car, then your child must have car seat.
You can go to Walmart or Superstore or London Drugs, they have some cheaper ones especially when they have promotions. I know it's going to cost some money and you might think it's not worth buying one when you are only staying for 4 weeks. But since it's the law in Canada and it's always safer to have your child sitting in a car seat, I think you'll need to buy it. Do you have a car yourself?? If you do have a car, you can bring it back and use after this vacation. I think I remember seeing a car seat on promotion at London Drugs few days ago which is less than $100, you can go check that out.
want to remind you that what kinds of car do your relative have in canada? some old car can only install one baby car seat & some car can install 2 bb car seat
