I have been in Dubai 2003, Aug. I sugguest U join tour rather than free-walk! ( Sunflower is quite good ah!)
If U'll go in Dubai, I recommand U should visit ' Yatch hotel ' as this hotel value ' 6 stars ' ah!!! 
the temp. is quite high around 38 degree! ' 4 wheel car' in desert should join since this point is the most attractive one!!!!
