Dear Responsible and Eager to Learn Parents,

I strongly reommend you all for a TV programme, shown on ABC Channel Every Thursday evening (2030-2125 hrs), produced by BBC and presented by Professor Winston. It is called,

"The Human Mind & HowTo Make The Most Of it"

This programme is so entertaining and easy to understand, you can learn in a very relax way, enabling you to help yourself and your child/ren, to better utilise your and your child/ren's Mind Power.

The 1st Episode was shown 2 nights ago, showing the experience of 6 Persons in 6 Different Situations, exposing how our Mind works - which sometime working even without our knowledge.

I've categorised the above 6 incidents as 6 "tion";

1) Tranformation
How a once always tired, bored and TV mad boy has been changed to an energetic, reading mad and TV dislike boy by a simple healthy substance;

2) Tuition
How a middle aged woman has picked up studying again and learning hard to become a midwife;

3) Visualisation
How a Commonwealth Game Medalist has advanced her gymnastic skill further by a simple method;

4) Memoralisation
How the 2002 World Memory Champion has memorised 520 cards in correct sequence by a simple technic;

5) Intuition
How a Fire Services Inspector has saved his and his mates lives by a simple feeling;

6) Invention
How some greatest scientists have unique thoughts by being in a simple environment.

I'm to explain more in details when I've more time later, as I now have to prepare to leave for the Brisbane Riverfestival.

But, make sure you lot are to watch the coming Episode, it is about,

"Our Characters".
(Your Characters or Your Child/ren's Characters too)

How Our Characters are formed;
How some of Our Characters may NOT be changed;
How a simple "Lemon" experiment can give some insights into a person's characters;
and many others......

You can visit BBC's website for more useful information,
www.bbc.co.uk/science

Bye for now.

The Answer and Our Suggestions

Dear All

The Answer and Our Suggestions for the three questions are :

1) According to the TV Programme, the other occasion when the Brain Cells are "Branching Out" (i.e. growing at a Phenomenal Rate) is the "Teenage Period".

This explains why most young Teens (aged 11-13) are seemed to be Insensitive, Inconsiderate etc. etc., as there are so much going on inside their Brains!!

2) Two Tricks we use to build up Fun BEFORE the meal, both are Getting the Child Involved while Having Fun.

One is to take them to supermarket to shop for the food.

We also use the opportunity to teach our younger boy the words, to look for the expiry date, to check the ingredients etc. etc. He can't wait to see what the food he picks will look like on a plate!

Another one is getting them to prepare the food.

Young Children love to wash, to chop, to arrange the food etc. etc., which is also a good opportunity to develop their Mortar Skill (i.e. hand/finger movement ) - laying the foundation for their future writing/drawing etc. Again, they can't wait to see the end product!

3) Our meals are Regular (i.e. around the same time every day).

This is essentail for developing Good Eating Habit, enabling their bodies to get ready. Also, our Boys do NOT have Unheathy Snacks between meals. We either give them fruits or dried fruits in between. So, they're kind of looking forward to the Big Meal!

Hope the above helps.

Cheers

There is a Chance

Hi carol

Thanks for your feedback.

Misbehaviours

A short reply to your question regarding why Young Children having Tantrum and how Adults could change their Personalities.

According to the programme, there are two periods when a Human's Brain Cells are most active, they're "Branching Out" and because there is so much going on (and Growing On) inside their Brain, a young child just can't handle it Mentally, they then naturally show it out Emotionally and Physically through A Tantrum.

Would any parent like to guess when is the other period?

Meanwhile, an Expert has helped a male driver to overcome his hot tempter and swearing habit while driving, by training him to control the Front Part of his Brain and he succeeded after a few weeks and Avoiding a Divorce!

Away from a Dinning Table

We have to think like a Chid before we could deal with them Effectively.

And there're a few reasons why many children NOT staying at dinning table. And let me concentrate on Two Reasons this time.

Children are born to Play.

Because this's the way they Learn.
This's the way they Explore the World - with their hands, feet etc. etc.!

And the main reason they don't like sittting still at a dinning table is simply because there is NO Fun.

So, they just rush through their meal to start or continue with their Fun.

The best and indeed the most effective way to attract/keep a child to come/stay at a dinner table is to,

Making BEFORE/DURING/AFTER a meal an Enjoyable occasion - have FUN!!

We've to build up the Fun.

Would any parent like to guess how we build up the Fun?

Second Reason why many children NOT staying at dinner table is simply because they are NOT hungry!

They've far too many snacks between meals. And they therefore don't look forward to meal time, as they prefer a quick snack so that they've more time to Play!

Would any parent like to guess how we could ensure children are Hungry at meal time?

Every Child is Different. So, there is obviously NO One Solution for All. Remember to be Flexible.

And whenever I've the time, I put the following question to my boys,

"My Dear Son, if your son Misbehaves, how you as a Father would respond?"

Children are Smart

Children know very well who they can take advantage of - their parents!!

Because we feel we have NOT spent enough time with them - a sense of Quilt - therefore we tend to let them get away even though they're NOT behaving properly! Somtimes gone as far as Rewarding their Bad Behaviours!!

Sometimes, we're Mentally and Physically TOO TIRED, so we completely SURRENDER to our Energetic children - giving them whatever they want, TV, computer game etc. etc. as long as they LEAVE us Alone!!

So, I'm not surprised you child sits properly at meal time only when the Teacher NOT you is around!

Your Son

A bit surprised regarding his Chinese Standard.
Was he born overseas and been living overseas for sometime before returning HK?

A Chance

If my wife has got a ALL CLEAR on 16 Oct after the check up, and if there are still flight seats available to HK, and and if our preferred Serviced Apartment still available, there is a Chance we will bring the "Human Mind" DVD to HK and lend to those Dedicated Parents for FREE.

(Though a deposit is required to cover possible Damage or Loss)

Have an Enjoyable Family Weekend Meal! (WITHOUT TV)

Cheers

DVD - sounds great

Fate,

Yes, it is a good news that I can watch Human Minds by purchasing the DVD as I cannot watch it here in HK.

I like this kind of episode very much, especially when you mentioned that in one episode, it talks about why babies have tantrum and why adults can change personalities, etc. I am really interested in that. Are they sort of related to psychology? It reminds me of the date when I studied psychology in university.

Your boy is quite mature that he really learns something from the series and took action afterwards. As a parent, it is good to see this.

Saw from your other post that you are good at keeping kids sitting at the table, any hints??-(

My boys are the most active type and cannot sit still for long, but in school environment/under teacher, they are better! sigh!

This DVD is really worth buying as your whole family enjoy together, besides, it offers 3 languages, most importantly with subtitles. I am thinking of learning words, as recently my elder boy needs to recognise some chinese words at school and I am thinking how I can help him to learn them.

Don't Say Goodbye

Dear All Again

I remember the Legendary Singer, Alan Tam had a song just called "Don't Say Goodbye" - who does NOT want the Good Time to stay?

My boys were having a Good Time when watching the "Human Mind" DVD, accompanied by my wife.

In fact, whenever possible, either myself or my wife would watch the TV programme or DVD with our boys, ensuring the showing material is appropriate for their ages and to answer their questions - their Brain Cells grow so fast and they're so eager to learn.

And it's our practice to let them watch only 30-minute of TV or DVD continuously. And after watching the part about "ersonalities", learnig Teens love to take on Dangerous Activites, my aged 8 elder boy asked Mum if he should throw away toys associated with violence (like his plastic sword, plastic gun etc.)

It's nice to see he could draw his Own conclusion Indirectly from what he'd seen and in a Constructive way!

Like Money (and TV, Computer), DVD is NOT a Evil in itself, but mainly depending on HOW they're being used. When being used in a Proper Way, it's a Powerful Tool to help us to help our children.

Cheers

Just in time to watch it on Sunday
(Saturday we'll go to the Coolumn Kite Festival)

Surprise 2

You can view the DVD in one of the 3 Languages:

Cantonese, Madarin or English

A Surprise for Missing Out Parents

Hi Carol,

Yes, I've a good news (well, to some I suppose) for Missing Out Parents.

Yes, I've a link for them.

But, this time is different.

Channel ABC kindly allows FREE viewing for the "Mortgage Meltdown" (US Subprime Crisis), but NOT for this "Human Mind" series.

One has to pay for it - and I did.

I paid over the net on Sunday,

- A$ 29.95 for the DVD (with English Subtitles); and

- A$7.95 for Insured Courier within Ausralia.

(I'm supposed to receive it in 3 Business Days in Theory. But in Real Life, I'll be Lucky to get it in 5 Business Days!! )

ABC should have advised Viewers the programme would be available for purchase BEFORE showing the First episode, as I'd been writing like mad, busy in dropping down the key points while watching the 2nd and 3rd episode!!

(This would have allowed me to relax more and concentrate more in Viewing rather than Writing like a secretary!)

I ASSURE all parents,

I have NO Actual or Potentail Conflict of Interests,

meaning - I'll NOT benefit, in any way, when any one of you buying the DVD - I'm NOT a Sales!!

One word of Caution though, you better make an online enquiry First, as Australia is in "Region 4 in DVD Zone", whereas HK is in "Zone 3".

Just to make sure you lot can view the programme in your DVD Player!

Ops......almost forgot the most important bit,

Please visit the website, www.abcshop.com.au;

Put "Human Mind" in "roduct Search"on the Top Right, then click "GO";

The FIRST of the Search Result is the one;

Click on the title, "The Human Mind", it will tell you more about the programme. And towards the end of the description, there is a line "Click here for World DVD Standards" - do click for more information.

I think I've kept my Mind working quite Hard for the last few weeks - and so are yours!!

It's been a Wonderful Experience in writing this post!
And it's Well Worthy it!

As the 2nd episode has demonstrated with a pair of twin tenagers, as long as we keep ourselves in a Good Mood, we will be HAPPY!!!

It's ALL MIND THING!!

It's ALL UP TO YOU - to be Happy or Unhappy.

So, please Make Yourself and your Family Happy!!

Bye for now. And Have A Happy Happy Weekend!!

Cheers

Reveal Tomorrow

Hi Carol

The Question is getting harder and harder simply because,

You lot are getting Smarter and Smarter!

Like many other parents in BK, you're a Happy Person in nature. I can't Force, Make or Change you to be Happy - one has to have this "Happniess" from Within.

I remember one of Sam Hui's old songs about Happiness. It went like,

"Happiness is like reading a good book.........."

Here in Sunshine Coast, we had another tragic accident on Sunday. An under age (15-year-old) Drunk and Speeding driver crashed his car, causing death to a teenage passenger NOT wearing seat belt, and serious injuries to another teenage passenger. (www.thedaily.com.au)

I could only wish more Teenagers understand the Wisdom of,

"Being Alone does NOT mean Lonely

"Happiness is NOT proportional to the number of people around you;

"Those can have Happiness from the Smallest thing is almost certain to have Long Lasting True Happiness"

It's obvious you're a Happy Person, and therefore so will your child. And I therefore have to say a BIG "Thank You" to you to your Great Contribution to the Community, because A Happy Child is to grow up as a Happy Teenager and A Happy Adult, and they're almost certain NOT to be a Trouble Maker or Criminal!!

It is all because,

"A Loved person will Love others;" and

"A Happy person will make others Happy"

You're so, so close to the answer.

I will disclose what I've for the Eager to Learn but Missing Out parents tomorrow.

Have Another Happy Day.

Cheers

Hi ngmammy

I would like to thank you (and other participating parents) too for your Contribution, making this post more interesting and therefore attract more Attention.

Back to the Question again,

Does any parent would like to guess what I've for the parents missing out the First Episode or the Entire Series?

"Aha" Moment

Good Try, carol and Almost Have Tried ngmammy,

The scientists are convinced that when an Unique Moment (i.e. the Invention/Discovery) comes, it can be "Seen".

And they've concluded this Unique Moment is acutally related to the Moment people Finding Solution to a Problem,

Unique Moment = Problem Solved Moment

naming this Problem Solved Moment as "Aha Moment".

The scientists then try to Measure/Record the "Aha Moment" by putting all these wires with plastic ends onto the volunteers' heads, and then connecting the other end of wires to a computer, monitoring their Brain Wave Activity.

A picture with thousands black spots was then shown to volunteers, asking them if they could see, for example, a dog somewhere in the numerous dots.

The Moment the volunteer Found the dog, the monitor immediately showed a SUDDEN SURGE of the Brain Wave, lasting about 1/5 of a second - that's the "Aha Moment' - the Moment the Problem is solved, the Moment the dog is found!!

To me, this could mean all those puzzling pictures we've seen all over the years, like finding a face from sand, finding a cat from a dog's face, comparing curves with straight lines etc. had indeed done us some good - challenging our Brains!!

In fact, it's been really Challenging for me, trying to explain to you all what I'd seen in the First episode, and what I've learnt from it.

And I sincerely hope every single one of you have also learnt something from this programme.

Like everything else in Life, there has to be An Ending to this Post. In additon to the six "tion" I 'd mentioned at the beginning of this Post, I'd like to include two more "tion",

I've Deep Appreciation for all your Fantstic Participation.

Before I go, I've something for those missed the First Episode in Australia and those completely missing out in HK (and other countries?).

Does any parent would like to guess what I've got for them?

Cheers

A Word of Caution

Dear Parents

Just visited www.on.cc .

The "Orietanl Daily" (Net Version) reporting the FIRST case of Fish Liver Oil Tablet Overdose occured in HK back in 2004.

For the Previous Three Years, a mother had been giving her then 4-year-old & 3-year-old daugther EACH 13 Tables a time, TWO times a day (=26 Tables a day), WRONGLY believing such EXCESSIVE doseage could ease her daugthers' Asthma probelm.

The Livers of both girls were seriously damaged (became "Hard") and one of which even needed to be removed and replaced.

Just remember,

Follow the Advice/Prescription.
NEVER OVERDO ANYTHING.

The Award Goes To

Deal carol, chingyu, Devlin Mum & ngnammy,

Thanks for the Good Guesses.

To me,

Every Single One of You is a Winner,

so Each One of You deserves an Award.

(Sound Familiar - the 10 Gold Songs Award by RTHK, www.rthk.org.hk?)

The Quick Thinking Award - Carol
You came up with TWO guesses in such a short time, Great Work!

The Straight to the Point Award - chingyu
No Fuss - Straight to the point- 2 words - Impressive.

The Most Humourous Award - Devlin Mum
Did you figure out the anwser while you're mmm.. in. ...... or.....mmmm just finished Toilet?
Great Stomach....well, sorry, I mean, Great Humour!

The Grand Award - ngmammy
You've got it!!!!

Yes. It was as you've guessed,

"The environment is quiet and their Mind most relax....."

Professor Winston pointing out it is essential for one to be in a Tranquil Environment, making one competely relax, then one would make New Invention/Discovery.

Professor Winston then gave two examples.

Newton was lying lazily on the grass of an Orchid, when an apple felt down from the tree.

Newton then discovered the "Force of Gravity".

And Garbelio (could be Galileo Galieli, according to Devlin Mum) was in a church, and after watching a church official swinging a chain holding a candle, he then made a pendulum copying the movement of the swinging chain, and eventually made a Clock.

It is very True that,

"Being Alone and Being in a Tranqulity"

will enable us to find ALL the answers in Life.

I personally believe when Humans was made, ALL answers were already placed INSIDE us.

Only when we have "Alone" Moment;
Only when we are "Completely Relax";
will all these Answers Re-surface in our Mind once again.

(And I had this Wonderful Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience during my 4 1/2 year stay in the Exceptional Peaceful NZ, enabling me to have found (I could be wrong) Most Answers in Life)

The programme also suggested scientists have found a way to Record "When" (i.e the EXACT Moment) a Unique Thought (i.e. Invention/Discovery) Actually taking place in the Mind.

Does any parent would like to guess how scientists Record such Unique Moment?

Cheers
