I lived in TW for many years. After I married, I still live in TW. Luk Yeung is a well known kindergarten in TW and their reputation is very good.

Since Luk Yeung started their nursery class in 2004, my son was the first batch of the nursery student. Teachers are very nice, many NETs. I am very satisfied with them but the only thing is the school is too small and there are too many students in the school.

Funfil (Discovery Park), environment is good, nice and comfortable but I chose Luk Yeung at last.

I also plan to select one from the two kindergardens you mentioned...one mother said the teachers in Fun fun were not nice and she planned to transfer her son to Luk yeung ...however i live in Discovery Park, it's very convenient...how about 升學前途? any difference between these two?

綠楊vs方方樂趣

Hi Huicheunghk,

我兩個仔都係讀綠楊, 大仔今年巳經升P2, 細佬今年升K3。
這間學校係比較細, 但係學校好有經驗, 大部份老師都好有愛心, 而且課外課程又多(下課後再可報名讀普通話、英文、珠心算等...)不用跑來跑去。再者, 我兩個仔的三文兩語發展真的不錯, 學校有兩個普通話老師，有5-6個外藉老師長駐(其他幼稚園我相信沒太多有這數量)，而且經我大仔及其他同學大部份於不同小學都能完全takeover到，總結我個人感覺是一間很好的幼稚園。

不過學費唔平，每月$2,000有多(沒有學卷可用)，K2下學期間始有默書，K3大約至下學期要寫日記(1句都得)。

但方方就不太清楚，只是大仔選校讀K1時到過方方，感覺很Cool、唔舒服，綠楊就光猛好多。

Hi,

我囡囡而家讀緊方方 nursery，佢班主任好細心同好有經驗，so far，we have pleasant experience. 就算 bb 班，我都覺得佢哋嘅程度都相當夠深 o架，因為上學期評估都有四頁紙溫習o架，如果家長鍾意程度夠深，一定會滿足到您們。

其實，每間學校都有部分家長會遇上好老師同埋唔係幾好嘅老師，好難一概而論嘅。我有朋友嘅囡囡今年去 Luk Yeung in K1 ，佢囡囡比較活潑走來走去，坐唔定，點知個老師黑面，最後梗係收都唔讀啦。方方嘅地方好寬敞，不過，係密封式，冇窗嘅，靠空調同鮮風機，去過幾次，入面唔會覺有空氣唔流通嘅感覺，不過，有部分人好唔鍾意冇窗嘅，呢啲好睇個人喜好，所以最好自己去睇吓，感受吓。至於學費方面，我諗方方貴啲，要三千多。

其實每間幼稚園都有d老師唔係太愛小朋友走來走去,但以我所見緣楊同方方都不錯,因兩間都做了咁多年,只要小朋友讀得開心,而校舍ok令小朋友舒服,就係家長想要,而緣楊係荃灣都好多年喇以一間本區教學的幼稚園佢都頂了咁耐應該有一定的原因。

Hi Sherman,

My little daughter is in their billingual class (Eng + Cantonese) so I've no idea of their international class curriculum. The reason why I picked their billingual class is at the time when I submitted application last year for their nursery class, I still haven't made up my mind between local primary school or international school. Thus, I've picked the billingual class so that she can learn Chinese. As far as I know, Funful internation class will not teach Chinese at all fm Nursery thru' K3. T4, if parents are not aimed for international primary school for their kids, they shouldn't take the international class. Otherwise, it'll be very difficult for chilidren to pick up Chinese learning in P1 of local schools.

Hi Shermen,

I agreed that 20 min. English teaching is not enough. However, I'm not only relying on school. Imagine that our kids will only be staying in school for all in all 3 hours which is much less time than staying at home with us. Even though they are in international stream, it may not guarantee that their English will be better. That's why, we have to do more at home creating an English speaking & learning environment for them which is most important.

Since my little daughter was borned, I bought the DWE learning set. I always play the CD songs to her when she was a baby. When she was almost 2 years old, I let her to watch DVD. After that, she spent quite more time in watching DVD which we all know is not that good for children watching DVD than reading. As you know nowadays kids, they prefer watching on TV than reading books. I admitted that I'm not persist enough to switch her habbit from watching DVD to reading books. However, I found that she has learnt much more colloquial English than I expected. Besides, I have quited my job last year since Aug when my daughter started her nursery school so that I can spent even more time with her. At home, I talk to her mainly in English about 90% while my 2 sons, my hubby & the maid are talking to her in Cantanoese. I intented to do that in order that her Cantonese will not dominate English.

In addition, my daughter will go to playgroups 3 times a week which are conducted in English. Also, phonics class learning after school at Funful once a week which I found is quite good. As one day when we travelled by the MTR to Shamshuipo station, my daughter told me how to pronoun the blended sound "

o" in "Shamshuipo" because she is now learning the blended sounds like "Sa, Se, Si, So.... etc".

With all the above supplementary learning tools & playgroups, I don't really care how long is the English session at school. According to the playgroup teachers, my daughter's understanding and speaking ability in English are good.

On the other hand, due to the concern of too little time of English session in billingual class, I heard the experience from parents of Funful's K1 student. They put their kids in the international class for Nursery. Then, they switched to billingual class when K1 so that they can started to learn Chinese from K1. I think you may take this into consideration too if you want your kid learn more English in nursery class.

Also, I was told by one of the parents that teachers in billingual class is more caring and experienced than those in international class.

Yes, you're right. Apart from English lesson, mathematics is also conducting in English.

I believe it's due to difference in teaching methodology between traditional and international. The teaching methodology of billingual class is more discipilinary like all others traditiional schools while international class is similar to those international schools that teachers are less demanding in children's discipline. They have different culture. That's why parents may feel that the billingual class teachers are more caring.

I think parents has to really consider if they want their children to be in local or international primary school. If they just want their children to learn more English at school or more time spending with foreign teachers rather than going up to a international primary school, they should consider joining those English playgroups after school rather than taking the international nursery class.

I agree with you, just attending the international class cannot really improve the kids' English as most (if not all) classmates are kids from local families, they will talk to each other in Cantonese most of the time. English playgroups are helpful coz the teacher:student ratio is usually lower and the classes are usually more interactive. However, the most effective way to improve the kids' English is putting him/her in international schools where English is the major language for communication among their peer.

Sounds like you'll also let your kid to enroll internationl primary school. Will you consider ESF? If so, you should enroll ESF kinder as ESF kinder student has the priority for ESF primary school interview.

I'm still considering whether to put my little boy at int'l primary school coz I want him to have good Chinese standard as well. I'll anyway apply ESF kinder this coming Oct as ESF (Phoenix) is my most preferred int'l primary school. But I think the chance of being accepted by ESF is quite slim because they give priority to kids who do not use Chinese as first language.
Btw, did you apply ESF for your daughter?
Also, do you have any idea which primary schools do the K3 students at Funful (Discovery Park) usually go to? (I've asked the same question in many other forums but seems nobody knows...)

Yes, may daughter has got accepted by ESF Tsing yi kinder luckily. She'll be in ESF K1 the coming Aug. Since there is no interview for ESF kinder, it's just like a lucky draw. For kids studying in international schools, we cannot expect their Chinese standard will be as good as local schools' students. Parents have to find all resources to help them in Chinese learning. In fact, it's a new challenge to me. I used to deal with the problem of my two elder sons in English learning. And, there are quite many different kinds of English learning playgroup or tutorial classes available so that I can easily find support from those learning ceenters. Now, I have to learn to tackle the Chinese learning problem which is new to me. I cannot imagine how difficult or what problem will my daughter has in learning Chinese. I still does not have any clue yet. I think I need to think & work harder now.

Dealing with Chinese learning is more challenging than dealing with English learning as it's a more complicated language and less available courses in the market. Please share with me your experience later as I may follow the same path of your son. Thanks.
