Where Are You Going? To See My Friend!
by Kazuo Iwamura, Eric Carle (Illustrator) 我係買中英雙語版的(台灣買的)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-This lively and rhythmic, bilingual picture book is told in dialogue, with rebuslike symbols used to identify speakers. It details an energetic romp with a dog, cat, rooster, goat, rabbit, and a child, all of whom become friends. Carle's familiar collage technique is employed in the book's first half, while Iwamura's gentle watercolor illustrations, combined with the Japanese text, make up the second half. The two texts are divided by a gatefold that includes the music and lyrics to the song "Where Are You Going? To See My Friend!" in English and Japanese. An irresistible, spirited ode to friendship.
Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
K-Gr. 2. Starting at opposite ends of this bilingual collaboration, two popular children's book artists work toward the middle while telling the same tale in English and Japanese. A dog, off to meet a friend, invites a cat to come along, because "my friend is your friend." For the same reason, a rooster, a goat, and a rabbit end up tagging along; the "friend" turns out to be a child. Eventually, everyone meets to dance and sing across a central double-foldout spread. The text is brief and repetitive (speakers are identified by icons), and the Japanese text is transliterated, which allows monolingual American children to "read" along in either direction. Each artist illustrates his half in characteristic style; Iwamura's fetching, naturalistic paintings are softer looking and feature smaller characters than Carle's familiar painted-paper collages, but the artists' work merges without jarring contrast. The authors' remarks printed on the inside dust jacket will be lost to most children, but the tale's simple theme and unusual format make an inviting celebration of social and cross-cultural connections. Comments:
A bilingual story. Very nice picture. Coz of two illustrator, two styles drawing could be seen.
Very nice!!

The comment from a Japanese reviewer:
The repetition of "Where are you going?" is great for teaching a grammar point and the kids love getting to read the Japanese after I read the English. It's also fun for learning the animal sounds in English/Japanese. Reading the roman-ized Japanese might not be that interesting for someone who doesn't know any Japanese but older kids can start to learn easy Japanese writing by looking at this book.

Gloria,

Yes, I also bought this book.

The story is really interesting. A Ka-Choo of a little bug will cause a series of co-incidence and accidents.... so funny!!

GloriaChung 寫道:
I introduced about this book earlier on. I started letting my son read it. It is really humourous and my son cuddled the book in his arms and asked me to read to him this morning at 7:30am. I post more info here. I like this series better than the classical Dr Seuss set. So I have not bought yet.

Because a Little Bug Went Ka-Choo!
by ROSETTA STONE

Illus. in full color. "A little bug sneezes, causing a chain of calamities. Repetition helps beginning readers and cartoon-like characters add zest."--School Library Journal.
It is an adorable book and we never get tired of reading it. And it really does teach an important lesson that even small acts can have big consequences. I like the sequence of events and the idea of how a little bug justed sneezed and a lot happen. This book is fun to read.I highly recommend it to all parents.

[size=small]I just can't help recommending it to you all AGAIN!!

Hi, kittylock,

I am still 1516 as the drawing are not nice ma. Perhaps I should borrow from the library la.

Ah.. want to share one funnyt hing with you. My son said very 老積 things those past two days: e.g.

"Maybe the dog is missing again..."
"even the car is missing too...."

I recalled that when I was a kid, I was just a piece of yam. But nowadays, kids have so many reading materials that boost up their language abilities. I think it is worth buying more and more books for our kids. It is more than worthy, agree?

比多d理由(唔係藉口bor!!)自己嘛! ha..

Re: 分享外國 或 台灣童書收穫

Good moring Gloria.

The size of Dr. Seuss miniature book is just as large as a palm of an adult and they are hardcover books. In my opinion, it's still worth to get a set by paying just $200 for 10 books!

The miniature library includes both classical "Cats in the Hats" (which I found it's a little bid complicated for kids for too many words) and simple stories like "Hop on pop" and "One fish two fish red fish blue fish" (just a few "repetitive" words in a page).

Yes, agreed with you that kids seems to be much more smarter and 老積-er than before nowadays.

It's worth to invest more $$ and time --- helping them to establish reading habbit and keep the enthusiaum in life, and more important... learn to tresure it....

Re: 分享外國 或 台灣童書收穫

Hi Gloria,

I read this book with my kid last night.

This story is about a little bird who hatched out from the egg while its mother went out to find a worm for food. So this little bird went out from the nest to find its mama. It met so many animals and things (incl. a cat, a dog, a cow, a car, a plane, ..., and lastly a shovel) during its adventure and asked them "Are you my mother?"

Really funny.

Frankly, I don't like Dr Seuss' drawings much. But the above are nice stories.

Re: 分享外國 或 台灣童書收穫

yeeyee,

You need to bring your HSBC credit card to Commercial Press in person for redemption.

Firstly you have to check the availability of the redemption item at the bookstore. If they still have the stock, you need to fill in the form at the cashier counter and pass your credit card to them for points deduction. Then you can get the books right away la.

Re: 分享外國 或 台灣童書收穫

[size=medium]Seasons : A Book of Poems - By Charlotte Zolotow
(An I can read Level 3)

Two old favorites strut their signature stuff in this collection for somewhat-beyond beginning readers. Divided into the four seasons, Zolotow's 40 poems, often in a child's first-person voice, are brief (4-17 lines), evocative reflections on and responses to the natural world, but they also tap feelings that children experience regardless of the season. "I'm mad at my mother and she at me"; "It's no fun days I've done something mean." The large type and short lines, the leading, the choice of words, and the lyrical repetition all make the text inviting to independent readers. Using concrete language and images for the most part, the poems occasionally venture into the abstract: "a message in another language spoken to a part of me who hasn't happened yet," which may extend their appeal to somewhat older children. Featuring youngsters in charming country settings, Blegvad's precise ink drawings are washed with a delicate full-color palette and reinforce the quiet, thoughtful mood of the selections. The winsome (if a bit generic) children are by turns pensive, inquisitive, joyous, or secretly smiling. There are several other collections of seasonal poetry available, of course, but none so attractively designed with early readers and their emotional world in mind.

[size=small]One Hundred Hungry Ants
by Elinor J Pinczes, Bonnie MacKain (Illustrator), Elinor Pinczes

As you might guess from the title of this little book, one hundred hungry ants are marching towards a picnic to get some yummies for their tummies. However, marching single file in a line 100 ants long is going to take way too long to get from where they are to where they want to be and the littlest ant is worried the food will all be gone by the time they get there. So he comes up with the idea of marching in 2 lines of 50 instead as a way of getting their faster.
That is just the first of several ideas the littlest ant has about how to divide up 100 ants in this story told by Elinor J. Pinczes and illustrated with what I assume are colored wood block prints. There are plenty of counting books, but "One Hundred Hungry Ants" deals with issues of multiplication and division. It seems to me that the key thing here is that sooner or later in reading this book young readers will be anticipating the littlest ant next suggestion. The front flap of the dust jacket points out that this book provides the math skills young kids can use to make change for a dollar and that certainly has to be a good thing, well worth the learning.

Ending: the littlest ant who advised to change the marching pattern was scolded hard by all other ants. ... coz by the time they finished the no. of time of marching pattern (5 in 20 rows, 10 in 10 rows, 20 in rows), all the food had been taken by other animals and nothing was left.

Very funny stories. Not many words.

Re: 分享外國 或 台灣童書收穫

Books by Grace Maccarone - Hello Reader Level 1

[size=medium]My Tooth Is About To Fall Out

A perfect topic for an easy reader--a child's first loose tooth. A young girl with a wobbly, wiggly, jiggly tooth worries about where it might fall out, but once she has that big-kid hole in her mouth, she's as proud as can be. A pithy text and nice big illustrations outlined in black make this very accessible to the intended audience.

[size=medium]The Lunch Box Surprise

All the first-graders are opening their lunch boxes with lip-smacking satisfaction when Sam discovers that his mother has forgotten to pack his lunch: "Sam is surprised. Sam is sad. Sam is hungry. Sam is mad!" Never fear, Sam's classmates all share their food with him. Bold, black-outline drawings, simple in composition and bright with colors, focus on the children, their emotions, and, yes, their lunches. The simple sentence structure and thumping rhythm will help young children read right through to the book's satisfying conclusion. A good choice for those just beginning to read.

[size=medium]The 100th Day

It's the 100th day of school in Miss Hill's class. Jill makes 4 necklaces with 100 beads. Ben writes about 100 cats and Kate draws 100 stars. But Jack doesn't want to do any of those things. Instead, he jumps rope 100 times!This story is told in simple, short sentences with vibrant illustrations. Also included after the story is a Word List and hands-on activities, perfect for young readers to practice skills such as word building, punctuation, and letter formation.

[size=medium]I Have a Cold

Written in rhyme, this story is about a boy who has a bad, bad cold. A sick child describes how it feels to have a bad cold.
