For starters she has two of the most idiotic, self-centered parents who ever lived. Then there's the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Mrs. ("The") Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer. Fortunately for Matilda, she has the inner resources to deal with such annoyances: astonishing intelligence, saintly patience, and an innate predilection for revenge.

When James accidentally spills the crystals on his aunts' withered peach tree, he sets the adventure in motion. From the old tree a single peach grows, and grows, and grows some more, until finally James climbs inside the giant fruit and rolls away from his despicable aunts to a whole new life. James befriends an assortment of hilarious characters, including Grasshopper, Earthworm, Miss Spider, and Centipede--each with his or her own song to sing.

The building's new tenantsa giraffe, a pelican and a monkeyhave hardly introduced themselves to the lad when a chauffeur-driven limousine arrives to invite the glass-shining team to clean the 677 windows of the Duke's house. After demonstrating their cleaning finesse (and catching a burglar in the process), the three are rewarded with edible gifts and an invitation to live with the Duke. Young Billy receives the renovated sweet shop stocked with candies of the world, which Dahl describes in detail.

For years, Mr. Hoppy has leaned over his balcony rail to gaze longingly at Mrs. Silver, who lives one floor below him. But all of her attention and affection is showered upon her pet tortoise, Alfie. Although the creature seems content, his devoted owner is concerned because he has gained a mere three ounces in the 11 years she has owned him. When the distressed Mrs. Silver tells her neighbor that she will be his "slave for life" if he can find a way to make Alfie grow, the determined Mr. Hoppy devises an elaborate scheme to make her think the tortoise is growing.

But this set of books seem to be suitable for older children woh !! If I buy it, need to find a place to store it for several years !! Which is why I saw it but am hesitant to buy still.

Hello Reader Level 1 - another good book by Grace MacCarone

The simple, rhyming text of this Hello Reader! book (just a few words to the page) takes readers on a shopping trip to the grocery store with a little girl and her father. They choose plenty of healthy foods, but every time the child suggests something sweet, "Daddy says, `Not today.' / So I put it away." The expedition ends happily with a stop at a frozen yogurt stand outside the store. Children will find plenty that is familiar within these pages, from the supermarket setting to the tug-of-war between parent and child. Best of all, the cartoonlike line-and-wash illustrations make the characters sympathetic and the book inviting, all the while providing clues to the words with clear pictures of familiar foods. A good choice for children looking for books that don't look babyish but have very simple vocabulary.

Hi Gloria,

The designated age for "101 Back-To- School Jokes"
should be 9-12 years old.

However, I found the English used is quite simple. Hence I think even kid of aged 6 will be able to read it indepedently.

Jokes are quite funny. It also contains the same joke of Little Critter posted by FXPC before:

Teacher: I want you to spell mouse.
Student: M-O-U-S.
Teacher: But what's on the end?
Student: A tail!

(真係天下一大抄！！)

Yes, I saw only ONE book there and bought by me finally!!

I went to Star House Comm Press yesterday, and bought :

1. Roald Dahl : Most Original And Inventive Children's Writer Of Our Times
Boxed set with 10 books (Org. $675, now $399) at Commercial Press.

Couldn't resist buying, after checking the price of individual books in the series. :mrgreen:

2. Bear's Big Blue Treasury
Hardcover collection of 7 stories of "Bear in the Big Blue House". Org price $150, now $64 less 20% --> just $51.2 (avg $7.3 per story)

My son said he wanted the book, and promised to read it (sometime).

Also bought 4 thin grammar books for later use.
Total = $7xx. :-( :-(

I redeemed the Happy Families books at CWB Commercial Press last week.

When I went there again on Sunday, I still can see 2 of the titles I mentioned and the other 2 seems out of stock.

The designated age range for this series should be 5-8 years old.

I recommend you to get one (if it's still available) because the story is interesting and pictures are nice also.
