Re: 分享外國 或 台灣童書收穫

Mice Squeak, We Speak
by Arnold Shapiro, Tomie dePaola (Illustrator)

an elegantly simple poem is a picture perfect introduction to animal--and people--sounds for very young readers. Every page, framed in decorative borders, reveals a critter making noise: "Flies hum. / Dogs growl. / Bats screech. / Coyotes howl. / Frogs croak. / Parrots squawk. / Bees buzz. / But I talk!" The animal sounds emerge from or surround the animal itself; thus, "snore snore snore snore..." wafts drowsily out of the mouth of the slumbering bear as snow drifts around the edges of the den. Three children, of different ethnicities, make occasional, giggling appearances throughout, urging each other forward to let their own voices be heard: "But I speak!" "But I say!" "But I talk!" Award-winning artist Tomie dePaola (26 Fairmount Avenue) is in fine form with his luminous folk-art illustrations, which make a delightful accompaniment to Arnold L. Shapiro's friendly rhymes. (Baby to preschool) .

Three wide-eyed, enthusiastic guides, two boys and a girl, bear the message that every living thing has something to utter, but only humans talk. Speech balloons encapsulate their words. The two characters who aren't speaking listen and watch their friend with happy facial expressions. Brilliant watercolors and a vignette-style format make this book a perfect choice for read-aloud sessions. The animals represented are shown in their natural habitats: the bear snores while hibernating in a cave, the sheep bleats in the meadow, the frog croaks in the pond, etc. However, Shapiro's poem uses sounds that are not commonly identified with that animal. For example, "Crickets creak" rather than chirp; "Flies hum" rather than buzz. Still, this is an entertaining presentation of a concept not commonly introduced to young children.?

With restrained colors, this book is a fun poem to read aloud, with plenty of ways to expand upon the story. Cute drawings, plenty of opportunities to make animal sounds. For example, "Crickets Creak / Mice Squeak / Sheeps Baa/ BUT I SPEAK.... Horses Neigh / .. BUT I SAY... / Parrots Squawk / BUT I TALK". Used as one of the curriculum books for the school year.

Personal comments: Very very good for yound kids. Nice pictures and a lovely poem.

Bad Hair Day (All Aboard Reading-Level 1)
by Susan Hood, Joy Allen (Illustrator)

Book Description
After her mom gives her a disastrous home haircut, a little girl is convinced she'll have to wear a hat forever. But a trip to the beauty parlor reassures her that she's not the first person to feel this way, and with a few snips from a professional, she's hat-free and proudly showing off her brand-new do!

* All Aboard Reading Book, Level 1

Card catalog description
On the way to get a hair cut, a child sees others with not-so-perfect hair.

This book is great for young readers. The rhymes keep children's attention and the large print is easy to read. My child finds the story humorous and even repeats the rhymes during playtime. It is great to see my child laugh about a book read two days earlier. This is one of our family's favorite books.

And, it is a very good book to teach some terms relating to hair cutting and hair style.

E.g. Crazy curly, hard perm, streaks on hair... bangs are out of line........

On the 1st page the girl looks very shaggy. On the last page, she shows her new hair style in the class with her arms crossed. Everyone wants to have the hair that she has. Very cute !

Suddenly!: A Preston Pig Story
by Colin McNaughton

Yr 3-7

Disaster waits in the form of a wild-eyed, drooling wolf, but you couldn't prove it by Preston the Pig. Children meet him on his way home from school, the wolf's shadow lurking ominously behind him "when SUDDENLY!" the young porker remembers his mother had asked him to go to the store. Many more hilariously breathtaking moments follow as he unknowingly foils the predator. McNaughton peppers the narrative with big, bold use of the word "SUDDENLY," and readers are sure they will turn the page to discover fat little Preston locked in the beast's mangy jaws. Instead, the wolf encounters one disaster after another: falling off the school roof; swallowing a big, tough bully; and crashing a steamroller into a wall. When the pig arrives home, it looks like he may meet his nasty fate as a strangely lupine silhouette lurks at the kitchen sink. True to Preston's luck, it is only his mother, who turns around to give him a big hug. Young readers will delight in knowing more than the happily oblivious porcine hero. The art is ideal for group sharing, on a much larger scale than Guess Who's Just Moved In Next Door? (Random, 1991; o.p.). This story will make a good combination with other fairy tales in which all the pigs might not experience such a happy ending, and is a refreshing relief from the classic tale where the only way to save your hide is to be smart, industrious, and build a very strong house.

This imaginative book tells of an innocent little pig followed around the neighborhood by a hungry and scheming wolf. Each page shows Preston walking around the neighborhood seemingly in imminent danger (connoted by the words "when suddenly!" with "suddenly" in big bold type). As noted above, this is almost the pig and wolf equivalent of the Road Runner and Wiley Coyote (except the pig never plots against the wolf), and there are similarly benign results for the pig and violent injury to the wolf. The "violence" is cartoonish, but it's there (wolf is run over by his own steam roller, Billy the Bully gets bitten instead of our hero, Preston, the wolf crashes to the floor, and heavily bandaged wolf heads off to "wolf hospital): You may or may not believe such material is appropriate for your child. We thought it was alright, and the "Suddenly!" hook is a lot of fun (especially for you dramatic readers out there). Big, colorful, sometimes "Mad Magazine" style pictures in its 26 pages. This would also be a very good book for the beginning reader

There are 4 other books of the series: Oops! Boo! Swalk! Goal! There should be one on 'Oomph!" which however is not highly commended.

No, David!

by David Shannon (Illustrator)

Parents will be quick to jump to the conclusion that there can be nothing appealing in a tale of an ugly kid who breaks things. And certainly--from that adult perspective--there's something off-putting about the illustrations of David, with his potato head, feral eyes, and a maniacal grin that exposes ferociously pointed teeth. But 3- and 4-year-olds see things differently, and will find his relentless badness both funny and liberating. "No, David," wails the off-stage mother, as David reaches for the cookie jar. "No! No! No!" as he makes a swamp out of the bathroom. "Come back here, David!" as he runs naked down the street. Each vivid double-page illustration is devoted to a different youthful indiscretion and a different vain parental plea. Readers will be amused to know that the protagonist's name is no accident: award-winning writer-illustrator David Shannon wrote the book after discovering a similar effort that he had made, again with himself at the center of each drawing, at the age of 5. (Ages 3 to 6) --Richard Farr

From Publishers Weekly
In this boisterous exploration of naughtiness, Shannon (How Georgie Radbourne Saved Baseball) lobs one visual zinger after another as David, a little dickens, careens from one unruly deed to the next?coloring on the walls, tracking mud all over the carpet, jumping on the bed in red cowboy boots. Meanwhile, all those timeless childhood phrases echo in the background: "Come back here!" "Be quiet!" "Not in the house, David!" and most vigorously?"No!" Shannon's pen whisks over the double-page spreads in a flurry of energy, as he gains perspective on an image of a bare-bottomed David cavorting down a quiet suburban street or closes in on the boy's face as he inserts a finger into his triangle nose, his button eyes tense with concentration, and perfectly round head looming larger than the pages. While Shannon gives David the purposeful look of a child's crude drawings, his background settings (the kitchen sideboard, a toy-littered TV room) are fully rendered, effectively evoking the boy's sense of displacement. This dead-on take on childhood shenanigans ends on a high note, with the penitent David (he broke a vase with a baseball) enfolded in his mother's arms as she assures him, "Yes, David, I love you." Readers won't be able to resist taking a walk on the wild side with this little rascal, and may only secretly acknowledge how much of him they recognize in themselves.

My son likes this book. I read to him for the first time last night. He requested it again and again this morning. And say, "So many 'No'!!!".

He can appreciate the naughtiness of the David!!! I believe that the David Shannon (the illustrator) might be telling stories of himself.

Other books in the series are good too:

Unfortunately this series seem not available in library!!! :-( :-(

我心還想起 " I took my frog to the library"這本之前講過的書 (TST kmk 重有幾本!!),我小B都似書中的主的角!
