agree with so cloudy,
as most of the landlord will sign a contact with you.. usually for a year (dead contact), so, you better stay in hotel and make visit to all the location you planned.. have a look before you rent.
Hosannaoec,
In Staten Island, to have a car will be very convenience. As I did not rely on the public transportation, I only occasionally use public transport which is less than 2-3 months a time.
Here in our neighbourhood, we are detach houses.
Front and backyard, we are old house, but clean.
For 3 bedrooms, or apartments, I need to ask my husband as I don't familiar with it.
I will get back to you.

Dear Nillie_Mami
Hosannaoec,
Thanks for your offers, you are very nice, I am interested but I am afraid to know, anyway, we are appreciate!! :)
To have a car, depends on what kind of car you are looking for.. Toyota 4 doors 5 seats like Camry or Corolla (wrong spelling) will be less than USD$20,000. 7 persons van is less than $30,000.
the car insurance in Staten Island is the cheapest in 5 boro, as we isolated from other 4 boros, so theives tend to steal cars from the other 4 boros.
gas.. we used to go to New Jersey to fill up, because we are very close to New Jersey, which the gas is about $0.4 cheaper per gallon.. it is about $2.89 in New York, and it is about $2.47 in New Jersey.
Tax in New York is 8.375% but in New Jersey is 3, 6, or 7% depends on different area.
New York has bottle tax $0.05 per bottle or can, but New Jersey doesn't, so we usually go to BJ's /costco (supermarket -for household/small business) to stock up our groceries, which is 1/2 cheaper.. like pack of water 32 bottle in New york is about $7 per pack, but in New Jersey BJ's we got it $3.29 for 32 bottles with no bottle tax.
Well, all this tricks.. you need to come and learn when you are hands on it. We usually shop in New Jersey at those outlet mall, which may be just 20-60% of original prices, Well.. again, you need to know when they are on sale, they will send you the email. therefore, they help us save money... specially clothes for us and kids and shoes.. winter jackets..

Dear Nillie_Mami
Thank a lot.
In Staten Island 那一區是比較好呢?
在這裡養及買部車貴唔貴呢( 7人車)?我自小喜歡術數五行,有不少人請我幫他們睇八字, 準確度都幾高,若你喜歡可免費睇一睇,使自己掌握未來。
Everything is just so expensive in California as compared to New York. Gas is now $3.3X per galleon, 8-9.5% sales tax, $2 per 90-min trip on muni... We also shop in Costco and look for sale in supermarket starts every Wednesday. I am an amateur coupon clipper and deal hunter. Every dollar counts to the kids' education fund.
Nillie lives in a great neighborhood in Staten Island, but I think it may not be convenience for you if you don’t plan to own a car for the first few months. If you want to開班授徒, you can either get 退稅 or pay tax depends on your income. I think 醫療福利is free (or nearly free) for low income family. If you own a business (ex. 開班授徒), you can purchase a health insurance policy through an insurance company. Personally, I work in a corporate and purchase my family’s health plan through the firm.
學車 in NY is not too expensive, I got my driver license many years ago and 學車fee was decent at the time.
Hi Rose-mag,
In case you don’t already know, here is a site to pay a small fee for coupons… I tried to get free coupons first, but I’m willing to pay a few pennies for the good ones :) http://www.thecouponclippers.com/
the best thing about living in California is the great weather here. however, in general, the public schools are not as good as those in the east coast unless you live in the more expensive neighborhood. for the neighborhood with all the best elementary schools thru high schools, the minimum house price will be $1 million for a relatively small house (1,000 sq. ft. to 1,500 sq. ft.). also, you'll need to pay for property tax which will be over $10,000 a year.
otherwise, if you send your kids to private schools, it cost at least $700-800/month (usually christian or catholic schools) to $3,500/month for each kid. also, it's not gaurantee that your kid will get in the top private schools even if your kid is smart or gifted.
other than the weather, i think living in the east coast will be better if you have kids. or u can consider living in Texas if you don't mind the extremely hot weather there. houses are cheap and schools are good there in general. for $300k-$400k, you can get a house which is about 3,000 sq. ft. in the good neighborhood.
If you have iphone/ipad/ipod touch, there's an app called "Shopper" or "Shopper lite" (free) that can show you your local coupon. e.g. If I add Milk in my shopping list, it will show me it's on sales at Target and Safeway now.
There's a grocery store call "Sprouts Farmers Market" in Sunnyvale and they have very good deal in their weekly ad. (e.g. $0.99 a box of blueberries/rasberries/blackberries, 4 mangoes for $1, 19 cents Kiwi etc) Also, I checked out the coupon book at Whole Food as well. Sometimes they have the item on sales plus you add the coupon (sometimes can stach up with manufacturer coupon too), it's very good deal. 32oz organic soymilk is $1 and I stocked up! :) For items without coupon, I usually get it from Trader Joe. Costco's stuffs usually in big quantity and not good for our small household. Also, we got fresh veggi & fruits from the farmers' market every Sunday and the price are not bad for organic items. I am not sure if there's much farmers' market in SF tho.
The gas was $3.5x/gallon the other day. 9.25% tax here. $3.x gas is more acceptable now. Two years back, it was $5/gallon! But of coz I wish it will back to under $2. :D

If your daughter wants to enroll Spring semester (Jan 2011), she may have to act quick. However, each college has different requirement so she needs to find out the schools that she wants to apply and look into their requirements. In lieu of the SAT score, some colleges may ask for TOEFL result. I think she can take TOEFL test in HK. If she wants to send out her college application form now, she should apply it as a foreign student. However, she can change her student status once her SSN card is received. She will then be able to pay美國學生費用. In reference to政府資助, it depends on your household income and also saving in your bank account. It’s not easy to get資助… If your daughter is qualified for that, the first 2 years of the financial aid can’t be much anyway… If your daughter is planning to apply for private college, I don’t think the financial aid can help much… You may want to do a comparison between private, state and city colleges (in terms of 費用 and school reputation).
I’m not too familiar with 租用課室來教班, but I know people who use their homes as their offices…
Hi Iris,
學費 資助 is an assistance program for qualified taxpayers. Therefore, it's required for you to provide your tax return to financial aid center. I would assume that you don't need to file tax this year because you will be landed in few more months and you may apply it until you have filed your first tax return here in US...
I’m not too familiar with the colleges in NJ. In NY, you may want to check out SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton and SUNY Albany. These 4 schools are state universities in NY. There are still more state colleges and city colleges. If you don’t live on campus, you pay couple thousands a year for tuition (not sure the exact figure). If you need room and board, you pay additional $10k for the fee (again, not sure the exact figure).
