Re: Baby's bookcase

Though Chun Chun can't read yet, I think he can recognize and understand the pictures in books. When he flipped to a page about sleeping which has 2 kids in bed, he would pretend to sleep with both of his hands closed on one side of the cheeks. When he saw the picture of a chick, he would do his chicken dance. When he looks at labels with english characters, he always says "M","M", "M"..... very accurate pronounciation of the letter M. It would be a lot of fun if he can speak. Chickdad and I longed for this day to come!

Chun Chun also loves to talk on the phone. He would pick up the phone and walk away from us like he has some serious business to talk with the caller in private. He can also talk for 10 min.

I drifted too far away from the topic. Thanks for your tips on BB's reading material and toys. I think sooner or later ChunChun can speak and communicate with us. I just feel kind of guilty that I can't give him enough stimulations and learning environment during his active stage of development.

Re: Baby's bookcase

FloliMom

Thank you so much for your tips.

Whooh! Charis really likes to talk. Are you Doman mom? I found your method quite close to his.

Regarding to Starfall, I also know that web. I found it good too. But I thought that Phonics Kids are similar stuff and that is more rhythmic. You provide her both Phonic Kingdom and Starfall in a day? After your recommendation, I'm thinking of using it now.

Oh, there are too many good materials I can show her but time is limited.
Angel doesn't have any systemic input during daytime. My mom doesn't even know how to operate a computer and DVD. I should have to do everything in the evening.

Regarding baby Einstein, I also have your feeling in my first sight. But since Angel loves it, I played them quite often and found that I like them more and more. They are different from the kind of academic as what you said. They are art.

Very agree with you that our kids are smart enough to learn lots of thing. It takes not only our patient, our time but also lots of knowledge and creativity that I think I'm running out of it. :-(

That's why I really need to share you moms experience here or I'm afraid I would waste my girl's golden time to learn.

Chun Chun is very cute. I like his photo with Hello Kitty.
Chun Chun….did he join Kindermusik? I'm thinking whether he is Angel's coursemate. He is called Chun Chun but your Chun Chun doesn't look like…..
Angel likes to phone too. But she seldom talks. She just listens and said 无噢!

Re: Baby's bookcase

ptsamm,

Chun Chun goes to a playgroup run by Kid's Corner in Yuen Long every Sunday afternoon. He likes the songs and dances very much.

The photo in the hello kitty frame was taken half year ago. I am just thinking of replacing it. Now Chun Chun looks like a little boy not a baby anymore. Thank you for saying he's cute. He just likes to smile and the dimple on the left cheek makes his smile very sweet.

I also can't give Chun Chun systematic learning. My maid won't repeat the ABCs and words with Chun Chun with patience. She always said Chun Chun doesn't like it and then let him switch to other books or toys. We found that if we repeat the words, Chun Chun can catch up and try to pronounce the words with us.

At first I resisted the video materials as I don't want Chun Chun get addicted to the TV. But now I may give up as the video can do the repeating function and can relate the words with the real objects and the gestures of real people. I just found Chun Chun can follow the dancing and the body movements with a DVD tittled "Baby Song" very quickly but he was not really ready to follow every movement lead by the teacher in the playgroup.

I think it is good to share the views from other Moms and Dads.

Re: Baby's bookcase

ptsamm,

I will say I am sort of Doman mom. I do buy his theories and mean to follow. However, due to laziness in preparing the teaching materials and some technical difficulties, I do not adhere strictly to his teaching method. Nevertheless, I always like to employ his principles of teaching when I teach Charis, e.g. the concern on the environment, atmosphere and moods of parent & kid, etc..

Yes, I let her watch both Phonics Kingdom and Starfall in a day. Although it seems that Starfall and Phonics Kingdom are similar stuff but I will say Starfall is far more vivid, dynamic and interesting. I am pretty sure your girl will love it. Phonics Kingdom is very boring. At the beginning, when I have not yet known the specific method to use PK, Charis is uninterested in it. She would go away after a few letters. I gave up and put the PK aside for several months. I once thought that it will not be seen forever until I learnt the right way of using that teaching kit. Then I can finally keep my girl in the sofa to watch it.

I handle all the visual equipment (computer/VCDs/DVDs) myself. To tell you, ever since I return to work from my maternity leave, I have given up watching TV Programmes broadcasted during golden hours. When Charis was small, I took care of her when I was back from work. Now, I spend all the time with her, reading, teaching, playing, watching VCDs/DVDs... until she goes to bed. Then I may still have some TV before going to bed. That is really an unexpected change to me! So there is really a price to pay.

Of course you can still play Baby Einstein from time to time. But as you said, you are working and time is limited, you may let Angel try other different things if she has already watched the video for some time.

You can ask your mom to read Chinese books with Angel or play the CD during the day (Phonics Kids or other nursery rhymes). Listening is also very important. You can systematically do some interesting teaching for Angel in the evening, if you desire.

Re: Baby's bookcase

Thank you Flolimom. You are truly an excellent mom. Lucky Charis.

I'll do my best though sometimes I got tired… sometimes I got frustrated…sometimes I got nothing to play with her… sometimes I got nothing to teach her though I stored lots of books, DVD, CD, MP3 at home…

Okay. Let's talk about books.
Have you ever let Charis read Eric Carle's book. Angel loves them. I don't think she aware they are by Eric Carle. They are in different sizes and different styles. But she picked them from different places and asked me to read them repeatedly.

I had the same struggle. But as you said, there are really lots of good visual stuff. The point is our kids can't love them more. So I always have to take the balance between the books, DVD and CD.

Hey, please also share the books Chun Chun read.

Re: Baby's bookcase

ptsamm,

Oh no! I am too ashamed to be claimed an excellent mom. Like you, I am often "battery low" after work. At times I get exhausted, frustrated and lazy too. In fact, I always think that I am doing minimal. Sometimes I think I am not doing my best, as things can always be better.

It is Charis' keen interest in and fast pace of learning that drive me to "work" harder ... go to the library regularly, read books with her, watch all the videos with her, play with her ... or else I will feel guilty ... like wasting her golden time of learning. She is the source of motivation.

No, I haven't heard of Eric Carle's book. Thank you for letting me know. It's good that Angel loves them. See, again, an example of "so many good stuff and so little time for we mothers to know and to use"!

Dear FloliMom:
I think I've Phonics Kingdom at home but my elder son found it too boring. So we did not play it for years. Any chance that you can let me know the right way of using that teaching kit? Thanks!

Re: Baby's bookcase

Dear ptsamm,
Can I know more on Eric Carle's books? I am interested in them but have not read them before.

I have not got phonics kids, as I have been using Story Boom boom from Montesorri.
Recently I have added Hurray English from the same company also.

At first my girl was not interested, but then my maid drew a LARGE alphabet chart on the wall and she now is interested in the letters. I also watch National geographic animal channel so that she can know the words

I think that if you kepp offering her the books and also pretend to read loudly before the child as if it is very interesting, she would come to have a look

Re: Baby's bookcase

Chickmom,

You know what, yesterday I happened to notice that Charis was reading the sentences of the books (those I borrowed from the library). Of course she was not yet able to read these sentences. As you said, she pretended to speak very fluently in her own outer-space language. She even pointed at the words as she read along and read page after page. She was so attentive and serious that both Charis' dad and I can't help laughing in the corner (not to disturb her) .

Chickmom 寫道:

You said Charis read the pages aloud. I know Charis is a smart girl and knows quite a lot of words. Did she really read the words that she knows or just made some sounds that resemble reading? Chun Chun only pretended to speak in foreign language very fluently which we guess was probably Italian!

Re: Baby's bookcase

Dear all,

I just came back from the promotion counter of ENGLISH-TIME (Smart Kid's Club) at a Mall. Chun Chun pronounced the word "DOG" clearly following the card reader machine. I was very amazed.

I have to think about this kind of learning kits again. You know they are very expensive! (like the Disney one! and I also don't like the over commercialized characters.) Also if we depend too much on the learning kit, I am afraid the chances for interaction with our BB will be much reduced.

Any comments on these kind of english learning kits? I don't know much about the Phonic Kids series some of you talked about in this topic. Are they very expensive too!

Please give me some advices. The ENGLISH-TIME is very attractive but the sales said it is about the price of the Disney one. I have to persuade Chickdad too.

Re: Eric Carle
He is a very famous illustrator. The most famous book for small kids is the very hungry caterpillar. You can probably find them in bookstores like Page one, Dymocks, Hong Kong Book Centre, etc. You may also try the following website:
www.shopinhk.com
paddyfield.com
rainbowboat.com

…but then my maid drew a LARGE alphabet chart…

What a good helper!

Re: Baby's bookcase

Charis and Chun Chun can learn to speak very quickly because they are willing to speak out and do not afraid of making them wrong. My girl is very careful. She always worries about saying something wrong. She will only say whatever she has confidence to say. She also loves to speak but only restrict to repeat those limited words she's familiar with. Do you think we can train up kind of Guts?

Re: Phonics Kids
There are 3 stages for the whole set. Cost $388. Taiwan publisher called East West Publishing Ltd
Each stage includes 2 books, 1 CD and 1 VCD. The contents are almost the same.
Stage 1 is alphabets. The chant is like AAA A is for alligator.
Stage 2 is consonants. The chant is like /b/ /b/ bear.
Stage 3 is short vowels. the chant is like /a/ /t/ /at/ A big fat cat.
There is a poster and also some cards (very soft not made from cardboard) you can tear out from the books.

For Phonics Kingdom, you can refer to GC. From the ad, I found the first few stages of it very similar to Phonics Kids. But I can't understand why Flolimom said it is boring before she learnt how to use it because Phonics Kids is very rhythmic and I didn't have to use any technique. Just played the CD and VCD and my girl loves them. I post out the poster, and she read it very often. After she "learnt" all the 3 stages, I tore out the cards and found that she could recognize all of them.

I couldn't agree with you more. One year ago, I also struggled in whether I should buy those expensive educating materials. Because at that time, I still didn't know what kind of stuff are suitable for my baby. Now, I think that they are good and systematic. But I think there exist some cheaper or even no cost stuff and have the same effect. The point is can we dig out the sources from the ocean. I can say that it is very time consuming. The most important is we need the recommendations and experiences from the others. Starfall is a very good example.

Forgot to say thank to you. I tried Starfall yesterday. I played A to E. She kept on saying more more more. We like the dancing and classical music though they are too short.
Ah, just want to ask. How can you manage to show them 3 times in a day without the help of the others? You can only do them in the evening, right?

Re: Baby's bookcase

ptsamm,
Yes, Charis is indeed learning to speak at a fascinating speed. She can now easily repeat immediately whatever we say ﹝though the pronounciation may not be very accurate, especially for words with several syllables, like octopus, umbrella.) That makes me teach her words/phrases easily, e.g., I teach her the new word "muffins" while showing her picture of muffins, she learnt what muffins are and the pronounciation immediately.

On the other other hand, we adults have to be very careful about the language we use since she is now very fond of repeating sounds she hear. I once heard her mimicking our exclaimations "死啦!" and "cc
