ptsamm:

Re: Baby's bookcase

Sorry that I've to type English because I can only type Simplified Chinese in my computer.

Regarding to 品德教育中文書, many people recommended
亮亮成长故事
which is a series, I bought a few months ago. But I found them too difficult for my girl at the time.

FloliMom
Yes, I also liked to borrow books from library. But the difference is my girl does not 貪新鮮. She likes the book she's familiar with. So it usually takes time for her to accept a new book.

ORT系列: Thank you for your recommendation. I have been heard about them but never come across any of them. Do you think they are suitable for 19 months? I thought they are for age 2 up.

Ready Readers ABC: I highly recommend it as well. We used to read 5 little books for a week. My girl could find the pictures when I said the words at her 12 months. I bought Grade 2 but there is no song and both of us find them quite boring. I'm going to re-read ABC level.

Re: Baby's bookcase

Hi PaulineVin,

I also wanted to join the 1.5 year old gathering but the time was not fit.
I miss your 2 little boys too. Angel always points at 瑋瑋's picture and says 哥哥。
I should meet you guys some time.

瑋瑋 is very lucky to have so many good books. But the books issued by Hong Kong publishers or distributors are unreasonably high.

Regarding to finding suitable books, we are not only concern whether the books are good or not, the most important is whether the little one find it interesting. Don't you agree? Sometime, we find the book is very good but they just close it right away.

Thanks for your recommendation.
Are the stories told in Cantonese? I find it difficult to read Chinese book with my girl. It is quite strange to read word by word. But if not, I can't let her read the Chinese characters. You know what I mean?

Re: Baby's bookcase

ptsamm,

Everytime I bring new books from the library, Charis is very interested and curious to find out what they are about. Even though I put those new books at the bottom of the pile of books, she will sweep away those on the top and grab the new ones underneath. Since I have been borrowing ORT books for almost 3 months, she is quite familiar with the look of the books. So they are not completely "new" to her in a sense. Despite that she is always interested in new books, she will also re-read those old books every now and then.

Yes, generally speaking, they are rather difficult books for 19-month old kids in terms of the meaning of the stories. So I will only choose those stage 1 books (some are with picutres only & no words, some are with short sentences.) and those with content concerning daily life or things that Charis are familiar with. What's more, I will have my own way of presentation, e.g., instead of expecting her to understand the story, I will teach her vocabularies of those object shown in the book. Indeed the ORT books are really for older kids. There is no need to hurry now.

Re: Baby's bookcase

FloliMom

Regarding to reading, would you please share how do you read with Charis. Would she concentrate on one book and read it page by page? Could you manage to read through the whole book? How many books she would like to take in a time? Will Charis read by her own?

My bookcase is in the living room. Every night, my girl will pick lots of books into the bedroom. Actually, she doesn't have to time to read all of them. And for each of the book, she just read for a few seconds. Sometimes, I even cannot finish a sentence before she closes it and gets another book. Do you think she has concentration problem?

Re: Baby's bookcase

My Chun Chun also likes to flip the books and pretends to read them (of course in BB's language!). He also finishes it before I read the whole sentence on each page. I think he is not ready to read yet but it is good to get him accustomed to reading books during bedtime. It is a good chance to get intimate to your little one and have quality time with him/her.

Of course, I also like to know how to get our BB's concentration. Chun Chun always switches from one thing to another in very short time, even with his favorite video or books. Is he bored of the toys and stuffs? But we can't bring home new things everyday. Can you guys share some idea of toys suitable for our BB at this stage?

Re: Baby's bookcase

ptsamm,

My maid will read with her during the day. Sometimes if dinner finishes earlier, I will read with her by letting her sit in my cuddle or on my lap. Sometimes I will sit next to her in the sofa to read with her. I also try to read with her at other times if possible. Indeed there is no definite position or location, it is after all a relaxing and enjoyable time. (You have to make it one.)

I will point at the words when I read the words with a slow, clear but rather exaggerating tone. If there is any word I think she ought to learn to speak, I will try to let her see my mouth. I will try to lead her to associate the content of the book (videos as well) with relevant concepts or even show her the real things (apple, orange, egg ...) But if it is a bedtime story, I will just read through it.

Whether she will concentrate on one book and read it page by page depends on her mood, interest in the book and disturbance from other forces (environment, other people in the house, etc.) So I don't always manage to read through the whole book. Since she just loves reading (see the different colourful pictures), it is not that difficult to keep her finish the whole book though provided that the books are:

1. very thin, not more than 10 pages
2. those she is interested in
3. in a mood

Yes, Charis will read by her own. I have the books placed everywhere: small table (茶几), her toilet, my bedroom ... places she will go to and she can gain easy access to the books herself. She will pick up any book to read anytime she feels like to. You know what, whenever she sits on the toilet board, she will simpy say, "Book!". Then she will read as she pu pu. , sometimes at lunch/dinner time as well (but this is not recommended). Yesterday when I was working at the computer at the study room, I suddenly heard her reading aloud page after page as she flicked through the pages of the book she put on the sofa. I was so surprised!

Chickmom,

For her favourite video, Charis may be able to sit still on the sofa and watch it for almost an hour. For books, it will not be that long. However, she will read them from time to time.

You don't need to bring home new things very often. You can hide away some toys/books and only let Chun Chun play/read a few at a time. The babies are forgetful. When you take the hidden toys/books out again, he will think that they are new and will enjoy them again.

patsmm & Chickmom,

Hey relax! Don't force your kids to complete the book or read many book at a time. Babies at their age have very short concentration span. Just take it easy. The most important thing is to develop their interest in reading. It will be a long-lasting habit of them if they truely enjoy it.

Re: Baby's bookcase

Flolimom

Thank so much for your sharing. Woooh, Charis can read aloud by her own? Are they words or phases or sentences? She is brilliant!!

Angel also likes to watch DVD. She always requests to watch them one by one. I just worry it will hurt her eyes. So I restrict it to not more than 45 minutes. Her favorite is Baby Einstein. It is a very good series to introduce the art especially classical music. I always say that we can "watch" classical music in Baby Einstein instead of just "Listen".

What does Charis watch other than Phonics Kingdom? Hey, I just found the Phonics Kingdom is quite similar to the Phonics Kids which I bought. Have you heard about Phonics Kids which can be bought from most big book stores. The Phonics Kingdom has many levels by which we can learn the whole picture of phonics while Phonics Kids only covers the first 3 level.

Ha, Angel also likes to bring along with her books when she sits on her potty.

Re: Baby's bookcase

Dear FloliMom,

Thanks for your tips on BB's reading.

You said Charis read the pages aloud. I know Charis is a smart girl and knows quite a lot of words. Did she really read the words that she knows or just made some sounds that resemble reading? Chun Chun only pretended to speak in foreign language very fluently which we guess was probably Italian!

Re: Baby's bookcase

Charis can really read. She has been able to recognize 26 letters (capital/small) since she was 17-month old. She can recognize some words like cat, dog, bird, apple, bird, star, juice... even without pictures. I have bought books with only single word or phrases. No book is with full sentences though I do borrow books with sentences.

When reading the Phonics Kingdom Book 1, she reads in the same way as the video presents, i.e.,
A...A... ant
B... B... bear
N... N... nurse
In fact, she always chants in this way, even when she is not reading the book. . She know quite a lot of words and can read them out now. She can learn new words pretty fast and remember them easily.

Indeed I will recommend those reading materials with VCD/CD. Charis will have more interest to read the books and learns very fast if she has been presented the videos.

Baby Einstein is good but I think it is for babies. Our kids are old enough to learn. You can actually give her something more "acadmic". Don't underestimate their ability, they are really smart enough to learn. Of course, I will have to reiterate that the key is htat he/she must enjoy the learning activity himself/herself and is not being forced if the best learning outcome is to be achieved.

I have heard that Phonics Kingdom is quite similar to the Phonics Kids. I don't know which is better though. In fact, I will highly recommend you to the web site "http://www.starfall.com". I start to let Charis watch this web site every day and 3 times a day since she was 15 month old. It helps A LOT! It is a very very very... good site to learn alphabets and phonics. I start by letting her see A-E for 5 days, and then B - F for another 5 days, then C - G for another 5 dyas until Z. (You can design your own schedule/method for presenting the letters.) You will see the amazing effect!

Re: Baby's bookcase

Chickmom,

Charis can really read. She can recognize quite a number of words even without pictures (though sometimes when both pictures and words are presented to her, I can 't tell whether she is recognizing the picture or actually the words).

You said Chun Chun only pretended to speak in a foreign language very fluently which you guess is probably Italian! This is also the case for Charis when she is holding the phone. (She is crazy about talking on the phone lately, as if she is a busy business woman. She can talk continuously for more than 15 mins once she is able to get hold of the phone and can hold it (mobile phone) in her hand for more than 2 hours.) Charis will sart off with a 「喂?」, then speaks in an outer-space language very fluently which we guess is probably Indian!
