Re: Magic Tree House

hi gramar,

My daughter also reading Magic Tree House #1 and #2, she loves it very much as the stories have different adventures, just like Oxford Reading Tree. I also have a look at Junie B Jones, I found it have a lot of difficult words for my girl, so I haven't let her to try, may be later in primary.

Re: Magic Tree House

hi gramar,

My daughter is in K3 now, I don't think she is very good in English, but I believe that practice makes perfect. I started reading with her last year from Oxford Reading Tree Level 2.....10, then last month I let her try the Magic Tree House. I read the whole story with her for the first time, then I ask her to read the second time by herself, sometimes when she don't know the meaning of the words, she will try to find out from the dictionary.

Re: Magic Tree House

you have a good reading habit with her! my younger one (K3) is just starting to read (read out) Step Into Reading / Scholastic Reader Level 1, but sometimes I find that she has memorized the words instead of 'reading' it. BUT I believe her age can pick up very quickly if we continue.

My elder one (P.2) is reading some Magic School Bus Chapter books & Rainbow Magic. I bought Rainbow Magic the whole set of 42 books for her plus a few Special Editions! The first book I read with her & she gradually picks up the others. She's reading the 4th book or so now. She likes that very much (even a bit too hard at first) but the cover of the books are so fancy & attractive that she likes to bring to school so much - proud of getting the whole set! I'm happy that I didn't waste money at all!

Re: Magic Tree House

gramar,

I agreed that kids will pick up very quickly once they started to do it. Your elder daughter also read a lot of books, what kind of story for Magic School Bus?

By the way, can you share how to train up the spelling of the words?

Re: Magic Tree House

Sorry for such a late reply.

Good news for me - I just started to persuade my 5-yr old girl to read Level 1 books to me & she's able to read about 70% of it! (first I read to her, then it's her turn) The 2nd time I didn't read to her first, & she's still OK - a little surprise to me! If I continue this with her then I don't need to worry anymore... :-P

for the elder one (P.2), few weeks ago I bought her Scholastic Level 2 of Magic School Bus - titles like:

Lost in the Snow
Heart
Sleeps for the Winter

She has no problem reading this at all. I also got a primary level Magic School Bus Box set but I'll ask her to read later. (cos still has 40+ Rainbow Magic to read, & some Junie B. Jones too!)

For spelling, phonics books/activity books would help. To start with, try flash cards like 'Make a Word' or 'Rhyme Time'. 'Make a Word' spells 3-letter words with pic at the back & 'Rhyme Time' is about sorting similar sounds of words. I think learning through playing is the best method to arouse their interest.

Re: Magic Tree House

gramar,

It's a good beginning for your little girl, keep going

My daughter is writing some single words and simple sentences for her homework, I have frequent revision with her, otherwise, she will forget everything.

Today I found that "商務印書局" have discount on Magic Tree House $100 for 4 books, but only have 2 stories left there. They also have 15% discount for all the books.

Re: Magic Tree House

Is your girl K2? Yes, they forget very easily. So it's best to train them to love reading books so they will keep on reading the words so more easily to memorize them.

Yes, discounted books usually are quite out-of-stock. If you like Magic Tree House, you can buy from the below. They can send you a full list to choose from, also about 15% off, perhaps even more discount if you buy more.... (they also have Magic School Bus, Rainbow Magic, Geronimo Stilton etc)

Re: Magic Tree House

Re: Magic Tree House

twokidsmum,

You may consider ORT's another series called "TreeTops". Its levels ranging from Stage 9 to 16 (over 120 stories), but I don't know if they are available in public library

Re: Magic Tree House

呀! 我個女係睇TreeTop Stage 11 (我其實唔係幾識得分). Thx!

啱啱上HK Library website睇到有ORT Stage 12以上, 可能唔係放係英文圖書嗰邊.

Re: Magic Tree House

English readers, including ORT and other graded readers, are classified as 42x (English language) in the English non-fiction section. That's why you cannot find in the English fiction section.

Re: Magic Tree House

Hi twokidsmum,

how old is your kid? she can read Junie B. Jones so fast?

Magic School Bus is related to Science & real things so perhaps they can only understand at an older age or with some guidance. I got Magic Sch Bus kindergarten books (Scholastic level 2) & also Primary Chapter books.

I also got some Magic Tree House books, they are imaginative books - talking about going into the tree house & then going to a specific place/event like Olympics, Dolphins, Pirates & Titanic etc. These are suitable for P.1 - P.3. (my kid is P.2 & will start to read soon)

Re: Magic Tree House

Hi gramar,

多謝妳的book list, 我會搵時間慢慢研究吓.

我大女K3, 6歲嘞! 佢話長d既英文書好睇喎!

我現在只會陪佢睇中文書, 佢中文跟英文程度有頗大距離. 我還要抽時間教K1的細仔, 好鬼忙!

Re: Magic Tree House

Hi twokidsmum,

if your kid is just K3, perhaps Magic Tree House is more suitable than Magic Tree House Research Guide. Magic Tree House has more than 30 books so you can choose those more interesting. If you like the list, I can copy to you....

I also got 2 kids, one K.3 & one P.2, you'll get even busier when the elder one is in primary

yes, their chinese standard is also poor, but when they're in primary then they learn chinese words more quickly. Also you can buy them chinese children's magazines & do games with them...
