Hi, ngmammy

Hi Vanessamom,

Hi Harris_ma,

If you have intention to go to the American International School in Carlingford, have u consider moving in Carlingford or nearby suburbs such as Epping or Oatley. They are quite nice as well.

I just asked my brother-in-law about Paramatta and I am afraid he said the same thing as your friends too...............Anyway, hope some moms from paramatta could join in and let you know a better picture as hard and unfair for others to judge without have been living there.

My daughter used to be in one of the preschool here in Hurstville but it is now relocated to a nearby suburb. Still very near to Hurstivlle. It is called West Bexley United Church preschool. We have another BK mum's son also gone to the pre-school there as well. My daughter had a very happy year in that pre-school. The teachers were kind with so much patience. Also, there are a few childcares in Hurstville as well but I heard they all need to be put on waiting list..

Of course u can join our gathering la. You are so welcome! We usually have lunch and then chat until time to pick up kids from school!

Hope all is well!

Hi,

Both my husband and I are Christians. Together with our 2-yr old boy - Harris, we'll move to Sydney in Aug. My husband will work there.

We started looking for an area to settle down and the church as well.

We're now attending the Baptist in HK. Any church you see situable?

Hi ngmammy,

Thanks for all these. You're really kind.

I don't really know where to live in. Just asking friends in Sydney - all recommended Chatswood, but the rental is around 1.5 times higher than areas like Parramatta, Epping. Only our doctor recommended Parramatta. Is Epping very quiet and not convenient for shopping?

ThenI saw many HK moms live in Hurstville - I've never aware of this place before. May I ask why you choose Hurstville at the first place?

I'll live in Sydney for around 2-4 years, then my 2-yr old son will be in K2-P1 when we're back to HK. That's why I may opt for the Amercian International School. The school is running on Nothern Hemisphere calendar - starting the school term in Aug. and my son can finish a whole school year when we're back to HK (not just 0.5 yr.)

Sorry for scuh a long one- wanna ask about the Belxey United Church pre-school, I can get the website. What's the minimum age of getting in?

Hi Sydney BK mom,

I am too busy recently so haven't been here for long. There are quite a number of new mums. A brief intro of myself: I am also living near Hurstville with a 4.5 years old boy. I have been here since last March.

Got no time to read thro' all posting but it seems that some of you are asking about West Belxey Uniting Church pre-school and suitable christian church.

The minimum age of getting in this pre-school, as far as I know is 3 yrs. I asked in March and knew that they still have vacanies for the 3-4 years class by that time. Not sure if it's full now. I don't think they have any website. Better to visit the school when you arrive. In Oz, it's always good to talk to people in person.

Regarding Christian church, I am now attending the Anglican church in Hurstville. The Sunday school is good and they have a fellowship for parents with young children. There are some other Cantonese churches in Riverwood and Beverly Hills too. Maybe you can decide where to live first and find a suitable church nearby later, especially if you don't drive.

Josephine

Hi Harris_ma,

Yes. North side of Sydney is expensive. If cost is not the main issuethen North side is definitely better in terms of living environment andeducation.

I decided to live in Hurstville cause we want to live close by to mysister as her family has been living in this suburb for more than 7years. Now me and my sister are actually living on the same street.

Hurstville is located on South-west side of Sydney. It is very convenient. One thing to take note is that Hurstville is so-call a mini china town. Full of Asians and majority are mainland chinese. So if you are thinking , as your priority , of having your son to experience a more "western" style living environment before returning to hk then this place would definitely not a place u would prefer. On the otherhand, many parents liked this place of the same reason.ie,easy to adapt life here as the style of living is quit similar as in HK as u could get chinese groceries, out-dining at restaurants without needed to drive everytime. Alternatively, to balance out , is to live in suburbs that near-by hurstville so to "stay away" from the crowds but still maintain the easy access for that convenience.eg. Calton,Beverly Hill, Kogarah, Allawah.:-P

Cheers.

Hi Harris_ma,

Epping is a nice place to live. It is very close to Eastwood. Eastwood likes Hurstville but it is small scale. There are Chinese supemarkers, fish shops, meat shops, bread shops and resturants as well. Carlingford is also good and there is a Carlingford Village in which has Chinese shops inside but further small scale than Eastwood.

Hopes this help you.

Dear F.Forest and ngmammy,

Thank you so much!

When my husband's boss (with family in Sydney) heard of Parramatta, he responded firmly with "NO". He said there are many stations along the West line that we'll definitely don't want to go through.

Epping, Eastwood... will it be too quite? If we live in Epping, then my little boy can still go to the American Internationl School (not sure whether it's good).

My husband's boss recommend the stations around Chatswood - up to Gordon. Then what school should my little boy go to when he's 3? I feel a bit frustated as I've to start the school search all over again~~~

What should I do???

My boy will be 26 months, any schools can attend?

Dear all the Sydney moms,

Nice to see you here. Let me introduce my family briefly again.

My son Harris (that's why I'm Harris_ma) will be 26 months old when we moved to Sydney in the coming Aug. My husband will work in Sydney at least 2 years. We'll have a business visa with the status temporary residents. The visa allows my son to attend public school and my husband an I can work in Sydney. (I may be full time housewife instead).

What kinds of school can my son attend at that time? Is day care center the same as pre-school?

Thanks.

Hi Harris_ma,

The suburbs from Chatswood up to Gordon, and to Wharoonga are good places but the rental are comparatively high. If you do not have much financial concerns, you can think about it. Epping and Eastwood are not quite places and many Chinese live around. They also have the train stations and at the end of this year, the line from Epping to Chatwood will be launched (takes about 20mins).

If Harris is 26 months in Aug, then he cannot go to pre-school as the min. age start at 3. He can go to childcare centre (but has a long waiting list) and cost about A$70 to A$80 per day for the age group 2-3 years. Kids start the kindergarden at 5 (public school) and than Year 1 when 6 years old. Like my son, he will be 3 years old in Aug and he is now attending the childcare centre twice per week. My family started to live in Sydney last Feb and are still "settling in" (although we studied in Syd many years ago). Maybe my information is very limited but hopes it better than nothing.

Hi F.Forest,

Thanks so much, all these help me a lot!

Rental is a concern, together with my son's day care center cost~~ But my husband is now refused to travel along the West Line, so Epping and Eastwood are out...

Cheapest rental in the Upper North I could find is in Kilara... got only 1-2 main streets there? Poor me~~ If you're still settling down, then I may never be able to do so (or it'll be my time to go back to HK then).

I found in the web some new child care centers in Chatswood and St Leonards (the Zenith), but it costs up to A$87.5 each day. So dear!

Do the day care centers suppose to offer Math, reading and simple writing when the kids are 3-4 years old? Or I have to put my son into pre-school? Coz we've to come back to HK few years later and I hope my son can attend HK local schools.

Sorry, long again, my son will be 3 by June next year (2009), then what's the earliest starting date for pre-school? (will it be Jan 2010? Freak me out... I've to baby-sit for such a long time?!)

HI BK mums and Harris Ma,

I am new Mum in this group. We will go back to oz at mid of next year and my girl will be 3 and half years old, similar to Harris. Hope you can share some information to me. Do you know do I need to apply in advance in HK? Since the school term in OZ is Jan, I am afraid my girl cannot enroll in the middle of the school year.

Hi Harris Ma, my case is very similar to yours. I may live in Sydney for 2-4 yrs and back to HK then my kid will be K3-P1 then. Should I apply for American school then? Besides, I am afraid my kid cannot adapt to the new environment with 2 years in oz and 2 years in HK then. Can you share some advice to me?

Hi, JJ Chow.

Actually I'm also new and my family will be in Oz only in Aug. So, we're both in HK now, right? Glad to see someone with similar situation

I just knew American International School (in Carlingford) from the Internet. Mixed age (3-5) activities with MTH, reading, simple writing , Spanish and so on. Admitting kids all around the year. School term starts from Aug. to June next year, that means the same in HK! This will be good for our kids to return back to HK with at least completing 2-3 school years, but not 1.5! Not sure it's good and really have to pay a visit.

Where are you going to live? A big trouble! Chatswood, St. Leonards expensive- but got some seems to be good child centers: Zenith (new). There is also the Chatswood International Kindergarten offering bilingual program (mandarin and Eng.: expensive and long waiting list)~~~ And NO reply for my enquiries!

I don't really know what kinds of documents we need except those for visa application. Anyway, I just scan all the certificate like marriage, birth, Harris's vaccination card into the computer and will bring the orginal copies with us.

Kids will adapt to new environment easier... am I correct? Not sure, little Harris has quite a big bonding with my Indoesian maid, so it will takes him quite a while to get ride of it.

We have to teach Chinese at home, or our kids can't attend local HK schools then.
