[size=small] Rose and Dorothy by Roslyn Schwartz (Paperback - September 1, 1990)

No picture again!!!

For K2 level

Rose is a mouse with a too-large house and a heart as big as all outdoors. Dorothy, an elephant, is as big as all outdoors, but "to Rose, Dorothy was larger than life and twice as charming." When Rose invites Dorothy to move in, this arrangement seems doomed, for even the sturdy house cannot accommodate the pachyderm's stair-crunching footsteps and well-meaning but destructive way of cleaning the kitchen. Prim Rose is overwhelmed. Dorothy finally leaves, but soon finds a happy solution to this endearingly problematic tale. There is little text, but Schwartz's humorous, imaginative illustrations tell the story well. The book casts a funny yet sympathetic look at these mismatched friends, who accept the fact that they make better neighbors than roommates. Ages 3-7.

In this inconsequential story of friendship, a mouse (Rose) invites an elephant (Dorothy) to share her house. At first, while Dorothy seems "larger than life and twice as charming" to Rose, all goes well. But Dorothy starts to seem clumsy and messy, so the two part company. Later, after becoming an overnight success as a nightclub singer, Dorothy buys the house next door to the now-lonely Rose, and the friendship resumes. Why these developments occur, readers haven't a clue, which greatly cuts down on involvement. The colored-pencil illustrations are somewhat appealing, but fall short of commanding interest. Pale colors and a layout that never varies rob the book of attention-getting contrast. The most fun stems from several illustrations depicting mouse and elephant engaging in activities together (at the art gallery and beach). In these, Schwartz takes the opportunity, missed elsewhere, to draw humor from the two characters' relative sizes.

A good book about friendship!!

Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light. Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Officer Buckle and Gloria) relies more on the nuances of her jewel-toned pictures than on words to pace this giggly bedtime story, making it perfect for observant preschoolers. In one inky-black spread, Rathmann lets only the shocked, wide-open eyes of the guard's wife tell us that the gorilla has been detected! Tiny details such as the faithful, banana-toting mouse and sky-bound pink balloon that appear in each picture keep this book fresh, magical, and fun--even after countless bedtime readings. Very cute and lovely story. Good to tell in Chinese too but you must check the CHinese name of the animal first. E.g. armadillo.

I have reservation to read this to my son for fear that he will say good night to me in the same way. Good night, gorilla when nicknaming me as 'G....[l is missing] orill [two extra l's] a'

Thanks for your information.
In my mind, there are only a few big book store selling english childern books, for intance Popuxxx, page xxx, dymxxx etc.., the prices are extreme high. Thank you for all of your sharing so that now I know there are some small book stores selling english childern books like KMK and Idxxx at a more reasonable price.
Have you seen any "Ladybird" story books in Idxxx? I plan to buy alot of "Ladybird" story book, but I just can't wait until the book fair in end July.

Indeed, there are lots of unselfish moms and real experts (too many to name them but perhaps you have known their names for long) here sharing many good stuffs. (Of course, our 開荒(牛?)始祖 is.....FXPC la.) I have been positively influenced by them to share here and am thankful too. Because we know that sharing is fun and we gain more from sharing than not. I am not particularly contributing alot ga. 唔好見笑啦！ Only know that 施比受更有益。

You can join in to share more and give comments to books you have read or good stuff you have found.

How old is your kid?

"Ladybird" and other UK books are much expensive than the US books.

Next time if you visit "Singapore/Malaysia" then you may buy some "Ladybird" there. The price is about < Hk$20.

By the way, you may also find the cheap ladybird books at "景行行" when they are on clearance sale.

Once the creatures are found, the siblings realize the virtues of having them in the house. So, too, do the cats begin to appreciate the joys of human companionship. While the text seems to project the benign mischief, the illustrations draw a less clear portrayal. According to Davis's watercolors, the cats are attempting to trip a child, spill food, and damage furniture-not the sort of behavior that warrants an invite back into a house. The pictures themselves are nicely detailed. However, the pale yellow, teal, and brick orange used appear washed out and don't suit the frenetic commotion taking place. With its easy vocabulary and rhyming verse, Scat, Cats! is well suited for beginning readers. Readers will find little enjoyment in the destructive actions of these cats and find a bit unbelievable the children's change of heart.

The author uses onomatopoeia to demonstrate how a simple sneeze sets off a messy chain of events for a pair of dinner-prepping warthogs. A note in the back explains onomatopoeia and challenges children to create their own noisy story. “onomatopoeia” = those words that sound like the sounds they are describing -à is such a difficult word here!!

The lovable, hapless creatures from Warthogs in the Kitchen: A Sloppy Counting Book (Hyperion, 1998) are cooking soup for their dinner party, with mishaps occurring from the very first sneeze to the one at the end, which will likely start trouble all over again. The onomatopoeic sounds will delight youngsters. Cole's pen, colored-pencil, and watercolor pictures complement so very well the chaos in the kitchen, even down to the detail of the little blue teddy bear that, once again, ends up in the dessert.

This wacky world of rhyme brings to life a petrified pencil trapped in a desk, monkey bars, and a slide, among other items. Reed's zany artwork is a perfect complement to the humorous poetry.

Dakos's collection of 23 poems from the perspective of items found at school satisfies the I Can Read requirements of simplicity and word repetition, but may not lure beginning readers back for a second time. A book sings ``Happy Birthday'' to a ruler, then sings ``Happy Unbirthday'' when the ruler says that it is not its birthday. Also appearing are a couple of clever itemsone on a kidnapped pencil and another on a comb pulling hazardous dutyalong with some typographic elements that amiably convey the idea that words are malleable; Reed's illustrations possess geniality and character, making some inanimate objects very personable.
