Hi! sbandiz,
After reading your below sharing. I would like to set-up a VOIP system when we come to Sydney in Oct. Can you advice me what do I need to set-up the system? Can I bring anything from HK? The VOIP adaptor for OZ?
Thanks for your help!

One thing to point out - you do NOT need a fixed line if you don't want to.

A few years back - we got upset with Telstra and their service / charges, and started look ...

Hi EliasDaddy,

There are at least 4-5 BK families live near Hurstville. I moved here Mar 07. The forwarder is a small but quite reliable one. Will PM you the contact.

EilasDaddy and sabandiz,

It's good to know there is a VoIP system but how exactly does it work, subscribe to the local PTT and then pay a monthly fee without the air time limitation??

Learn a new thing daily :)

Dear Morgan_Ma; and welcome EliasDaddy,

The mover was provided by my husband's company, it's SanXX FXX, usually it charges quite a lot. I didn't know the price as the company dealt directly with my husband's company.

Instead I could share with u my experience: I got 12 c.b.m (not sure it's the same as cubic feet, check with the movers), abt 1/3 - 1/4 of a small container. That's enough to pack all the items of my home: including a sofa, almost all the toys, clothes, stuff of a 3-person family. I also have moved my fitness bike from HK. But I don't have a fridge, washing machine. The mums here taugh me to keep the stuff with big plastic boxes as it can save space and it costs a lot in Sydney. I also buy many TempX tissues as it's expensive there and need some buffer to fill up the space when packing. Hope these can help

Dear Morgan_Ma,

1 more thing: u may buy some new furniture from IKEA in HK, the packing size is really small and the furniture in IKEA Sydney is more expensive than those in HK. The Custom of Sydney didn't charge me any tax for the new stuff.

Hihi F.Forest,

The child center is a new one, it's Kids Company in Zenith. Zenith is a new commercial center next to the Chatswood station.

http://www.kidsco.com.au/

It really costs a lot for each day, but my son is only 2 so only day care center will admitt him. As my son may go back to HK with us when he's 4 (attending K2 in HK) so we may let him stay at the day care for 2 yrs, or he'll have change school every year... really expensive though.

Thanks Harris_ma, it helps me a lot. BTW, did you buy any new electronic appliances like fan, heater etc? My hubby wants to buy but I'm afraid the Custom in Sydney will charge taxes.

Hi Morgan_Ma,

I think it's easier for the Custom to charge tax on new furnitures than electronic appliances - simply bcoz it's easier for u to remove the boxes of the appliances than the furnitures The Custom could not tell whether an item is new without the paper box.

For the heater, I just bought 2 oil heaters from Sydney, they're not expensive - maybe it's time for sale (the end of winter). A 9-fan one costs me A$ 69.9 and a 11-fan one A$79.9. I also bought a heater-fan for my son to take bath at A$29.9. But heaters are heavy, so if u're not driving, it will be a problem.

1 more info.: my husband bought a big fridge (around 400 L) and a big washing machine (8kg load) at around HK$12,000 in Sydney. Again, on sale.

EliasDaddy,

The tip is DON'T change the HK plug into the Oz one or the Custom may regard the appliance new and tax may be resulted.

Go to Shum Shui Po (?? Liu St.) to buy Oz plug at HK$5 each, then bring HK 拖板. Change the 拖板's plug into Oz one only when u arrived in Oz. Then you don't have to change the plug for every single piece of appliance.

I will fly on either 9 or 10 Oct and will take Qantas because they have immigration package which allows 20kgs extra per each person. I'll buy one way ticket which costs HK$4000 for adult plus tax and HK$3000 for children plus tax (I checked the price with Hong Thai).

How much is your ticket? Did you buy one way or return?

Have you issued the tickets? How come it is so cheap with Hong Thai? I don't think it is the actual price! You better compare with their price in Qantas web-site. You won't get that low!
I have issued the tickets before 1/8/08 (the fuel surcharges increased on that date). We brought one way and $4910 (adult) and 3820 (child). Actually, the price for Virgin and Qantas are very similar.
BTW Which part of Sydney are you staying?
