by Douglas Wood, Doug Cushman (Illustrator)

Douglas Wood and Doug Cushman have gotten together and authored a terrific book about Dads. These poor creatures would be lost without their little ones to help them.

A little green dinosaur gives examples of the "things that regular people can do but dads can't," such as cross the street without holding hands, read a book by themselves, or play hide-and-seek without always getting found. This amusing picture book will tickle youngsters' funny bones and make every parent and child smile with recognition. The simple, large-print text consists of one sentence per page.

The negative litany is of course a reflection of the efforts of loving fathers to make their sons feel good about themselves. "Dads like to go camping, but they need lots of help setting up the tent. And cooking. Dads like to go fishing, but they don't like to go alone. And they need extra practice baiting the hook."

Cushman's large, delightful, pen-and-ink and watercolor cartoons are reminiscent of the characters in The ABC Mystery (HarperCollins, 1996), and they capture perfectly the father-and-son interactions of this appealing reptilian pair. "And most of all, whatever happens, a dad never ever stops loving you." Whether read one-on-one or in a group, this story is sure to generate smiles all around. A great choice for Father's Day programs.

by Laura Numeroff

audience: ages 3-7

5-starred based on 81 reviews on amazon.com

Book Description
If a hungry little traveler shows up at your house, you might want to give him a cookie. If you give him a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. He'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache, and then he'll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim....

The consequences of giving a cookie to this energetic mouse run the young host ragged, but young readers will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.

Hello Ocean
by Pam Munoz Ryan, Mark Astrella (Illustrator)

audience: 3-8

In rhyming couplets, a girl describes the sights, sounds, smell, feel, and taste of saltwater waves breaking on the shore. Evocative paintings, with realistic figures that seem to be superimposed on strong, bright-colored acrylics, reflect the beach setting.

I borrowed it from public library, my son and I love it and wanted to own a copy. Wonderful Illustration!!!

The Snowy Day
by Ezra Jack Keats

Audience: Ages 4-8

A 1963 Caldecott Medal winner, is the simple tale of a boy waking up to discover that snow has fallen during the night. Keats's illustrations, using cut-outs, watercolors, and collage, are strikingly beautiful in their understated color and composition. The tranquil story mirrors the calm presence of the paintings, and both exude the silence of a freshly snow-covered landscape. The little boy celebrates the snow-draped city with a day of humble adventures--experimenting with footprints, knocking snow from a tree, creating snow angels, and trying to save a snowball for the next day. Awakening to a winter wonderland is an ageless, ever-magical experience, and one made nearly visceral by Keats's gentle tribute.

The book is notable not only for its lovely artwork and tone, but also for its importance as a trailblazer. According to Horn Book magazine, The Snowy Day was "the very first full-color picture book to feature a small black hero"--yet another reason to add this classic to your shelves. It's as unique and special as a snowflake.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Re: 分享外國 或 台灣童書收穫

No trouble at all

Good graces and seeming obliviousness: they're two traits that all grandparents (human or otherwise) almost certainly share, and British author Sally Grindley knows it. No Trouble at All further documents the intergenerational phenomenon, following the antics of two bear cubs who're staying the night with an older relative--and who are supposed to be asleep in bed.

"They're such good little bears when they come to stay. / I just have to say it's time for bed, and off they go, as good as gold." Or do they? With playful, homey watercolors, illustrator Eleanor Taylor shows us all the late-night goings-on in this split-level tree house, as the wee bears proceed to have pillow fights, get into the honey and jam, and sneak outside. All the while, the older bear just sips tea and reads, cleverly letting us know that not all their mischief goes unnoticed. ("I guess I didn't close the door properly. Silly of me.") (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Two little bears outfox their grandfather in Grindley's (The Sorcerer's Apprentice, reviewed Apr. 1) sly offering. "Shhh! They're fast asleep. Don't wake them up," says the grandfather bear to his cat companion. "They're such good little bears when they come to stay. When I was their age I was full of mischief." But it's soon clear to readers that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Taylor, in her American debut, reveals the cubs' true nature in comical full-bleed watercolors. Paired with the grandfather's blissfully naive comments, they're all the more entertaining. "These old houses are full of strange noises," he says as the little ones engage in a pillow fight. "I'd better just check those little bears aren't frightened." When the cubs sneak outside and leave the door ajar, he says, "I guess I didn't close the door properly. Silly of me." The duo sees their chance to dart back inside and up to bed when the big bear goes to fetch a picnic basket from the shed: "They deserve a treat, those little bears. They're absolutely no trouble. No trouble at all." The premise may be well-worn, but the poker-faced text plays straight man to Taylor's charming artwork. Her illustrations of the impish cubs in a cozy tree dwelling make clear that the ursine siblings mean no harm. Ages 2-up.

Ages 3-6. Inspired by the familiar song "The Bear Came over the Mountain," this amusing story has playful language, cute pictures, and a try-to-guess-the-rhyming-word-before-I-turn-the-page format that will make it popular for interactive story-time sessions. The repeating pattern begins with a three-line stanza, which ends with a question that is answered on the next page. For example, "The bear came over to my house / To eat what he could eat. And what do you think the bear ate?" A turn of the page shows the bear enjoying "A treat," with the words appearing in bold type at the top of the page. The middle line of the stanza changes with each new sequence: "To do what he could do . . .," "To get what he could get," and so on. Each time the audience is asked to guess what the bear did, got, thought. Warhola's bright, silly watercolors sometimes provide a clue and almost always a laugh. The book will be fun to read aloud, and its repetition and rhyme will make it a good choice for increasing sight-word vocabulary and reading-readiness skills.

[size=medium]What Do You Like? (North South Paperback) by Michael Grejniec

Flip through this book just once and it's easy to question its purpose. Flip through it again and instead be caught up by the infinite number of possible interpretations of simple declarative statements, such as "I like music," or "I like to fly." Dual visual responses are given to six different statements, alternating between a girl and a boy. For instance, the girl is shown jumping rope as the text reads, "I like to play." Turn the page and the boy throws boomerangs across the double-page spread and replies, "I like to play, too." Progressing from what they like to a single statement of love, it becomes evident that these two children have the same mother. The book ends by asking readers what they like and love. The watercolor illustrations are unusual in that they show the bumpy texture of the paper on which they've been painted. This, coupled with immediate images and bright colors, draws readers into each fanciful scene. This book might stimulate children into creating their own comparable catalog of likes.

[size=medium]The Right Number of Elephants
by Jeff Sheppard, Felicia Bond (Illustrator)

a 5-starred book!!

There are millions, billions and trillions of counting books; is there room for another? For this one, absolutely. Sheppard counts down from 10 elephants to one in an inventive takeoff on the jokes that ask "How many whomevers does it take to do whatever?" First the reader is asked how many elephants it takes to pull a train out of a tunnel and save everyone on board; turn the page and 10 elephants charge into the countryside, squirting water and carrying train cars on their backs. It takes five elephants to "impress the neighbors with a quick circus" and three for "a fast game of cards." The text is quick, clever and unpredictable. Bond's illustrations are wild and fast-moving, and the format offers so much variety that readers will stay on their toes. Ages 4-8.

A good baby-preschool counting book!! Super cool elephants!!

by Robert Kalan, Byron Barton (Illustrator)

A frog tries to catch a fly, but finds himself on the other end of the food chain in this simple cumulative tale by Robert Kalan (Greenwillow, 1995). As each new danger appears, the frog is left with one option: jump, frog, jump! The frog's final escape, however, requires the help of a boy. Young children will enjoy the suspense as the frog struggles to survive, and will join in with the male narrator in the repetitive text. A few simple sound effects are used, as well as occasional light background music. Sound quality is excellent. Page turn signals are offered on one side of the tape. This is a book that pre-schoolers, especially, will embrace for its simple plot and step-by-step action.
"This is the turtle that slid into the pond and ate the snake that dropped from a branch and swallowed the fish that swam after the frog -- JUMP, FROG, JUMP!" This infectious cumulative tale will soon have the young frogs you know jumping and chanting with joy.

Very good!

by Julia Donaldson, Axel Scheffler (Illustrator)

Read this at Pxge One today. A very 'clever' story.

Again an awarded book!! 5-starred !!

To save himself from being eaten by a fox, an owl, and a snake, an enterprising mouse declares that he is having lunch with a monster whose favorite food just happens to be the animal who is at that moment threatening him. With each telling, the gruffalo becomes more menacing until all of the rodent's tormentors leave him unharmed. The mouse scoffs at them, for everyone knows "There's no such thing as a gruffal...." But a turn of the page reveals-you guessed it-a gruffalo, that thinks the mouse will "...taste good on a slice of bread." Undaunted, the rodent devises a plan to frighten the monster off.

When Mouse meets Fox in the "deep dark wood," he invents a story about the gruffalo, described very much like Sendak's fearsome quartet of wild thingsA"He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws." The gullible fox runs away when Mouse tells him that the gruffalo's favorite food is roasted fox. "Silly old Fox!" says Mouse, "Doesn't he know?/ There's no such thing as a gruffalo!" Owl and Snake follow suit until, with a turn of the page, Mouse runs into the creature he has imagined. Quick-thinking Mouse then tells the monster, "I'm the scariest creature in this deep dark wood./ Just walk behind me and soon you'll see,/ Everyone for miles is afraid of me." Fox, Owl and Snake appear to be terrified of the tiny mouse, but readers can plainly see the real object of their fears. By story's end, the gruffalo flees, and Mouse enjoys his nut lunch in peace.

Very much worth reading !!

[size=medium]The Gruffalo's Childby Julia Donaldson, Axel Scheffler (Illustrator)

This sequel to The Gruffalo (Dial, 1999), the wide-eyed daughter of that story's title character decides to find the "Big Bad Mouse" that her father has told her so much about. "His eyes are like pools of terrible fire,/and his terrible whiskers are tougher than wire." With her stick doll tucked under her arm, the youngster enters the deep, dark woods and follows marks in the snow to snake, owl, and fox. When she finally finds a little mouse, she grabs him for a feast, but the clever creature tricks her into running away to the comfort of her sleeping father's arms. The full-color cartoons portray a suitably sympathetic child in the snow-filled woods. While children may appreciate the details (the stick doll, snake tracks in the snow, gruffalo child's cave drawings) in the art, lack of change from picture to picture and in perspective diminish its effectiveness. The plot, rhymes, and art are all slightly weaker than the original tale.

Not sure if this one is equally good!!

Hi che,

Thanks for the recommendation.

I went to Better Chinese this afternoon to buy this Chinese book set.

They have just published a new 2005 version set (same 36 books with a CD in Putongha) sold at $389, which is $60 more expensive than the old verion without a CD.

As I'm a member of Poco's Fun Club, I can get 15% off on quoted price --> just $330.6...

PS. Stepping Stones still has old version stock (i.e. without a CD) sold at $329.

[size=medium]Story of the Orchestra : Listen While You Learn About the Instruments, the Music and the Composers Who Wrote the Music!
By Robert Levine

Click here to see inside pages of the book

Orchestra Bob guides readers through a delightful musical journey. The book is divided into two major parts: composers from Vivaldi to Bernstein and their associated musical periods, and the instruments of the orchestra. There are interesting and sometimes humorous bits of information about the men, their music, and corresponding historical events. The last two pages introduce the conductor. Quotations, boxed definitions, and the captions that accompany the colorful photos and spot cartoon drawings enhance the instructive text. In some places, however, the drawings are in stark contrast to the photos and take away from the overall appearance of a page. An accompanying CD provides musical selections for readers to listen to at specific places in the text. These selections are short enough to keep young listeners' attention. Although some well-known figures, such as Handel, Schubert, and Strauss, are missing, this is a fun way to travel through the world of music.

This is a hardcover book of 96 pages together with a CD of 37 tracks (over 60 minutes playtime)!!

PS. Gloria, I bet you'd like it!!

Marie,

Still not yet sleep? Did you get the poetry books also?

[size=medium]A Child's Introduction to Poetry : Listen While You Learn About the Magic Words That Have Moved Mountains, Won Battles, and Made Us Laugh and Cry
By Michael Discoll

There are plenty of collections of children's poetry available, but none like this one. The first section discusses the different forms the genre takes: nursery rhyme, narrative verse, ballad, free verse, pastoral, etc. Driscoll offers a clear explanation of each type and defines any difficult, associated vocabulary. Commentary on each example and a note on where to find the recording on the accompanying CD is provided for each selection. The second section covers individual poets from Homer to Maya Angelou and offers at least one example or excerpt from each writer's work. The brief introductions to the forms and poets are lively and often amusing. Readers will find the varied layouts and warm cartoon watercolors inviting. On the CD, a professional actor reads the selections; the music or sound that precedes each one sets the mood. This is a great resource for teachers and homeschoolers, and a must for libraries.
