An SCMP/TNS Opinion Leaders Survey conducted in October 2006 found that the city's business and decision makers and opinion leaders had a damning opinion of local schools and universities. An overwhelming majority of the respondents rated English Schools foundation and international schools better than local ones.

Most also felt that students at every level of the school system faced too much pressure. They found that graduates of local universities were strong in numeric skills, but trailed behind those who studied abroad in English, analytical thinking, interpersonal skills, leadership, creativity and international understanding. Most respondents felt that the government had performed poorly in ensuring the quality of education.

獨立調查公司TNS和《南華早報》合辦一系列的本地領袖意見調查，最新的一個調查於昨日公佈，題目便是香港教育。根據這項針對全港七百名意見領袖和商業決策者進行的調查，香港的大學生除了有關數學方面的才能表現較佳之外，其他如分析能力、國際視野、英文水準，以及領導才能等等都不理想，這些被訪者更認為來自歐洲、北美洲、澳洲，甚至中國大陸的大學畢業生比本港大學畢業生表現更好。香港的大學畢業生看到有關的調查研究，是否有危機感呢﹖

表面上看，調查所得似是老生常談，因為愈來愈多僱主表示，香港大學生不夠競爭力。這些說服只是一些含糊的印象，但這項教育調查所得出的仔細的科學數據，其實非常值得教育當局和教育界反省，想想我們的教育制度出現了甚麼問題，我們又可以如何扭轉劣勢。

調查結果究竟有幾嚇人﹖本地大學畢業生除了數學方面的能力得到接近一半被訪者表示有信心之外，分析能力只有一成六的被訪者認同合水準，他們普通話能力、人際關係、領導才能和創意只有一成二的被訪者表示有信心，而英文水準和國際視野則分別只有一成一和百分之八的被訪者認為有信心。對本地大學生在這幾項能力指標表達無信心的被訪者，則多達超過四成，其中表示對英語能力、創意和分析能力表示完全沒有信心的被訪者都超過一成。如果這個調查算得上是香港商界高層和意見領袖給予本地畢業生的「成績表」，我們的畢業生前途有幾光明﹖

死讀書難達要求
調查所設定的能力指標並沒有標奇立異，也沒有刻意為難本地畢業生。以香港這樣一個成熟經濟體系，以及以服務業為主體的市場，創意、分析能力、英語水平、普通話能力、人際關係、領導能力和國際視野，都是在此就業市場能站得穩的人士必須具備的條件，而這些能力指標都有一個共通點，乃它們都不能靠背書、默書可以學習得到。

本地學生必需要把課堂上學得的知識融會貫通，在學習中鍛煉出獨立思考和判斷能力，才能夠擁有這些在一個高度競爭市場立足的條件。而在這個過程中，如果學生不知要充實自己多閱讀課外知識和讀物，對培養這些能力亦是一大障礙。

在今日香港中小學教育制度重背書，狹窄地催谷學生根據考試局定出的課程範圍學習的環境之下，本地學生縱使晉身大學，得到國際知名學者的薰陶下，可能都會因先天不足而未能「轉型」，在此情況下，同學們依然用讀中學的態度修讀大學，國際視野、分析能力、創意思維又如何可以培養出來﹖

教統局推廣通識教育長遠可能有幫助，但成功與否還要看學校如何教通識。無論如何，這份最新的教育調查替今日的教育界面對的問題再次響起警號。 教育當局、學校、家長和學生若仍然未能擺脫舊思維，放棄背誦教育，我們的畢業生還有競爭力嗎﹖
