Below is another famous piece of David Shannon, author of "No, David!". Again not everyone like the painting. The striped girl is indeed a bit scary!!

The story is however meaningful.

The doe-eyed girl changes her stripes at anyone's command, and only nonconformity can save her. When she finally admits her unspeakable secret?she loves lima beans?she is cured. Shannon (How Georgie Radbourn Saved Baseball) juggles dark humor and an anti-peer-pressure message. As her condition worsens, Camilla becomes monstrous, ultimately merging with the walls of her room. The hallucinatory images are eye-popping but oppressive, and the finale?with Camilla restored to her bean-eating self?brings a sigh of relief. However, the grotesque images of an ill Camilla may continue to haunt children long after the cover is closed. Ages 5-9.

After reading it, I think it is a very good book too though the CD is just so-and-so. The book provides good contents re comparing instruments and their importance w/i an orchestra. More suitable for parents to know more before teaching kids than for young kids (too difficult to understand). More for K3 or above kids w/ good English reading ability.

I wish to own it. Any hints re where to buy? kmk told me that many moms had called to look for this book already. Wow... you see your posting has an impact!!!

Gloria: the Einstein book you've mentioned earlier, I can't find it in Hong Kong at all. Besides, it might take another 2 months+ for stock status because of overwhelming demand?! Eventually, I placed an order via amazon for a used one what costs me around HK$50 only.

Agree, I tend to pay $2.5 for library copy now unless it's really a remarkable one.

I have never tried (or more correctly, dare not yet) the 2nd-hand offer at Amazon.com.

I ordered one from TW la. Some HK$70 ah!! Still have to wait for stock to arrive la. :-(

Hi Gloria,

The Better Chinese set is very simple - each book teaches a few basic Chinese characters by repetitive sentence pattern.

Actually it is mainly designed to help children learning Chinese as a Foregin or second language (e.g. for ABC or guilow). So there is English translation of book content at the back of the front cover. And the introduction of each book in the CD is spoken in English.

For the 2005 version I bought, I found both paper and printing quality is very nice. Content is also rich and lively.

As the whole set costs only $330 nett, each book is just around $9! Children can also learn Putongha from CD as a bonus. Quite good price la!!

For the Orchestra book, I found it is really worth to have one at home. As it is soo... good, I have already reserved one more book for my good book friend la!! Don't worry... just waiting for my good news la!! :wink:

I've also bought 3 Brainy Baby DVD namely Spanish, Art and Music based on Gloria's recommedations.

btw, I found the presentation in Brainy Baby DVD look very similar to that of Baby Einstein DVD.

Regarding the Bainy Baby Spanish DVD, I found a very good Baby Einstein book from KMK to accompany it and good to use together:

Yes, I agreed with your saying about Poco's Fun Club.

It seems their management is doing not so well and mis-communication between their business partners and themselves always happened.

btw, I still found my membership is worth as I paid $5XX to join the club and get back:

1. $59 savings in buying better chinese book set
2. 15% discount on 2 My Musik Box course --> save $4xx
3. 15% discount on KinerU course --> save $6xx (but KinerU has discontiued business relationship now! ! :-( :-( :-( )
4. Attended about 10 free trail lessons at Mad Science, Artsplus, KinderU, HK Insitute of Languages, ...

But I'm still considerng whether I should renew the Poco's membership this year....

A reviewer called it a Timeless Classic and said:
The Giving Tree is a book about friendship and devotion. I find it sad that people choose to rip apart such a touching book and over-analyze it so much that its meaning is completely misconstrued.

Shel Silverstein honestly tells the story of a friendship between a boy and a tree that spans their relationship from childhood to old age. It is a timeless book that when we're children, reminds us of the importance of sharing, giving and unconditional love. As adults, it reminds us that it might take a lifetime to realize what is truly important in life and that we always seem to return to where we belong.

I love this book even more now than I did as a child, but it is appropriate for any age. I read it to my 2 and 6 year old cousins and they adored it. I read it aloud for a college class and they loved it. I gave it to a very special friend as a birthday gift and he has always treasured it. Mr. Silverstein gave us a special treat when he wrote this book. I only wish that he was still here to give us more like it.

Worthy to read and read and...

Check the quoted message below. Although it stated limited shipment in US, you have to check out overseas shipment with seller first. They usually ship overseas upon request as long as you pay it.

The Art Brainy Baby may be a bit difficult for 2 yrs but a lot of information about what art is all about.

As for Music, they do introduce about instruments. I have had a glance. May share more later.

I bought the betterchinese set you recommended. Though I find some texts are overlapping w/the picture -- blurred texts which are not easy to read clearly . Decided to buy it cos (1) it had a structural presentation of different types of basic sentences in Chinese (2) big enough fonts (3) Trad. Chin + Putongau 拼音 (4) the audio CD.. and (5) not toooooooooooooooooo expensive w/ the pocx's fun club. Like Kitty I will consider if I should extend membership by Oct this year.

It might be described as Chinese version of 'Ready Reader' which I am always looking for.
