Chickmom,

I have only bought Phonics Kingdom 1 - 2 for the time being - No real people! I don't think it offers any video with songs and dances played by real people in sets 3 -7 though. That's why it is boring to my daughter. She likes songs and dances, esp. by real people.

Thank you foir introducing me to "Baby Songs". Is it more for fun/body movement or is it mainly for learning the alphabets? Charis also likes to move and dance a lot when she watches the videos. If it is mainly for learning letters, I would prefer something else. I think Charis has passed the alphabet stage for long. She is learning words and phrases. Anything presents words/phrases systematically with real people moving and dancing about?

I found that my girl mixed up the letter name with the phonic sound. Like "I" she said "/i/". Do you think it's better to teach her phonic only after she can tell all letter names? Or do you think she can learn the letter names and their correspondence phonic sounds at the same time?

I bought 2 VCD of nursery rhymes acted by kids from a shop near APM. One is Barney and the other is just call "nursery rhymes" without any brand.

I have once had your same question. At that time, Charis also got mixed up with the phonics sound and the letter names at times. From my experience (I can only share with you my experience. I don't know whether this will be experts' opinions though), it doesn't matter much even she learns the letter names and their corresponding phonic sounds at the same time and get them mixed up. She will find that letter names more "over-riding" at the end because she will find more learning materials reinforcing the letter names rather than phonics (or she is given more exposure to letter names than phonics). Besides, for my case, I don't insist my girl to learn phonics. Kids of her age are not yet able to master pronounciation well after all. I reckon that this will be a bonus if she learns it. So my emphasis will be more on teaching her new words and phrases.

Last Saturday, I suddenly came to the thought :idea: of testing her how well she had learnt so far (I am not supposed to do this as this is probably against GD's principle?!) I wrote some words on a piece of plain paper with a ball pen and let her read them out one after one (hand-writing and no prior reminder). She could indeed recognize all of them immediately. I wrote about 30 words altogether. At first I wrote only simple words like apple, hat, nose, bed, lion, etc. With some doubts and excitement, I then wrote difficult words like umbrella, elephant and octopus. She could also read them out though the pronounciation is not very accurate. I was so surprised

and delighted

! I think I need to take the statistics to keep track of her learning pace.

Thank you for your recommendations. Charis is also watching VCDs on nursery rhymes and Barney is one of her favourites. Do you have the names of the nursery rhymes you mentioned? You may PM to me if it is so preferred (not to make advertisement ...).

Thanks for your advice and also thanks for reminding me that kids at this stage can't pronounce well. I made a mistake yesterday and hope all of you don't do it to your kids.

I tried to teach Angel letter names by an old generation method. I asked her to repeat after me one by one. She said A and B quite well. Then I found the C is a bit out of track. So I repeated several times. She suddenly screamed at me. I knew she was not happy with it. Actually, she is not so bad. She learnt most of them but she seldom says the letter name. She says the corresponding words instead. May be she found them more meaningful. Sometimes we parents will be trapped when we are too eager to get a result from our kids.

Regarding to the VCD, let me check it out tonight. Angel loved it very much when she was about 13 months but her nasty mom found it less educative then Phonics, Baby Einstein, ….then hid it up.

If we try to correct our kids' pronounciation too much, that will be discouraging for them to speak up! I remember that you said Angel is sensitive to making mistakes. I can imagine that she must have been unhappy. Praise her much instead so that she finds the learning process interesting and be proud and confident of what she can achieve! :wink:

Take it easy. Don't push too hard on yr kids & never mind how much she learnt.

It is very true according to Doman's theory - At this stage, we only need to input the information to our kids. Some day in a future (when that's the right time) you will see the output from ours kids - and that was all our& our babies effort all along in the past!

網頁:開心家庭網已經睇過, 也有留覽過一些討論區有關此topic. Basic concept已經了解, 不過想掌握得好d, 應該還是要睇書.

不過我諗我唔會跟足, 因要返工. 回家都很晚了. 總唔能夠每天同軒軒相處既短短兩三個小時只是不停在學習. 仲要同佢玩下, 俾佢撒下嬌. 現在軒軒weekend回到家, 有時佢會眼定定望住我同我講"公公,婆婆", 個種眼神好清楚話俾我知佢好掛住"公公婆婆". 唉. 我要努力la!
