Ten little monkeys swinging on a vine are quickly reduced to nine when one finds a water hole (headfirst!), then eight when they play out till late (and one meets a crocodile), then seven, six, five, all the way down to one in this bouncy, whimsical counting book. The most intriguing element in the big tall book is the giant pop-up tree that remains upright throughout the story. Readers hang 10 paper monkeys (provided inside a clear plastic window on the cover) from vines on the tree, then remove them one by one as each meets his or her jungle fate. The lurking perils include a sleeping tiger, a prickly bush, a large, green snake, and an easily annoyed elephant. But are these nine calamity-prone primates really gone for good, or will the last remaining one swing again with his playmates? Jonathan Lambert's visible brush strokes and bright colors are reminiscent of Eric Carle's illustrations (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?), with silhouetted backgrounds to tell their own part of the story. The paper monkeys and pop-up tree are not sturdy enough to withstand a lifetime of abuse, but they should stand strong long enough to get readers off to a great start in counting. (Ages 3 to 6) --

Ages 1^-3. Like Eric Carle's From Head to Toe (1997) and Zita Newcome's Toddlerobics (1996), this is a lively interactive book that will have toddlers imitating the actions and noises. A boy holds his teddy bear, and they clap, jump, munch, march, roar, and dance with tiger, monkey, crocodile, and other cheerful creatures. The simple repetitive words and watercolor cartoon pictures ("Elephant stamping, frog stamping, let's stamp too") will teach the names of the animals and actions and the fun of books.

``Tiger jumping, frog jumping, let's jump too.''

A boy and his teddy bear and their frog companion visit and step out with a number of animals. They swing with a monkey, roar with a lion, slither with a snake (teddy shivers, not slithers), fly with a toucan, and stomp with an elephant, until by the end of the book all are gathered in a gyrating hoe-down, a furious commotion that begs for participation. As much as the book encourages physical involvement, it also inspires readers to shout along with the energetic, rhyming, repetitive text:

``Crocodile snapping, let's start clapping, frog's scared of you.''

The frog offers minor funny asides on every page of this amiable outing, further buoyed by Lavis's carefree watercolors. (Picture book. 2-6)

This book will be most appealing to 2-4 year olds.

The book opens with images of big shoes that are not filled. The symbolism is obvious and rewarding.

The book features three bears, a Daddy and Mommy bear and a young bear. The book has a series of lines about what the young bear does, each of which ends with a refrain "Just like Daddy."

"When I got up this morning I yawned a big yawn . . . " "Just like Daddy."

"I washed my face, got doressed, and had a big breakfast . . ."

"Then I put on my coat and my boots . . ."

"I picked a flower and gave it to my mother . . ."

" . . . I put a big worm on my hook . . ."

Then the last line is:

"I caught a big fish . . ."

and you see a big fish being held by another hand on the side.

And the finish is: " . . . Just Like Mommy!" Mommy has caught a big fish, too, while Daddy has a minnow. In the final scene, each bear is cooking her or his own fish in a separate frying pan over a campfire.

The illustrations are unusually large, clear, and simple. This complements the book's simple humor. It is that combination that pegs this book for 2-4 year olds. The book can be a good basic reader, as well, for 3-5 year olds. On the other hand, if you child loves it at 6, that's great, too!
