An African-American girl and her father count down to bedtime. There are ten toes on her feet. Nine fuzzy friends (including a clever and playful kitty). Eight windowpanes displaying the snow outside. It goes on. Each view of the bedroom is a comforting one. The observant reader might wonder why there are only seven shoes straightened under the crib, only to find that when we observe the five buttons on the girl's gown, the cat is proceeding to happily gnaw on the missing shoe. The delicate interactions between the girl and her father are undoubtedly the most tender parts of the story. Oftentimes we switch in the story from viewing things from the child's point of view (like her toes or her seashell mobile) to looking at the girl as she perches in her father's lap. After some goodnight kisses and a big hug to her furry bear pet, it's off to bed for the sweet sleepy little one. There is nothing in this book that will necessarily grab you by the guts and make you want to give this story to every man, woman, and child you know. It's just a delicately woven lullaby that expresses almost wordlessly the affection that exists between a father and his daughter. .

What a wonderful story to read with your child! A great lesson in sharing and basic mathmatics. Plus, the illustrations are wonderful 3-D paper cutouts! This book is a special and rare treat for 3,4 and 5 year olds.

The little old lady returns and chastises the giant, who turns out to be her son. When the three animals admiringly present the crown to her, she modestly declines, stating that her little hat is quite enough. The theme is certainly a familiar one, but the warmhearted tale is told in an appealing, colloquial manner.

by Joanna Cole, Maxie Chambliss (Illustrator)

A meaningful and sensitive way to open up a dialogue about pregnancy and childbirth with preschoolers. Cole tells the facts in a straightforward, enthusiastic, but sensitive manner, addressing the child directly ("Once you were inside your mommy. Did you know that? It's true!"). The concepts covered are the most basic: babies grow in the womb from cells provided by the mother and father and are fed through a special tube. When the muscles of the womb start squeezing and the baby is ready to be born, the scene switches to the hospital, where the joy of the birth is the main focus. Chambliss's color illustrations match Cole's tone perfectly, and show a warm and loving family consisting of a mother, a father, and a baby who develops into a boy of about four.

The happiness brought on by the infant's birth can even be seen on the faces of the doctors, their smiles visible through their surgical masks. Illustrations that depict the womb and the umbilical cord make the text easier to understand without being too graphic. An informative note to parents offers practical tips for answering children's questions with honesty and warmth.

Numerous copies seen at KMK. Value for money.
I personally found it's unappealing especially characters although it's Caldecott book. I guess there are reasons behind in having the blacks.
