The evidence available was insufficient to enable the Consultation to recommend an operational “maintenance” requirement. Any figure chosen
would reflect a value judgement on what levels of activity above the minimum for survival could be appropriately included in the term “maintenance”
(see page 73). The cost of an additional 1.5 hours a day of walking or about 2 hours of standing would increase energy expenditure to 1.4 times
the BMR over 24 hours (3, 4). This figure should provide a guide for assessing the maintenance requirements until further published information
becomes available.
