Yes, the Lego membership is really good bargain!! So just need to pay US$9 extra to get the gifts, VCD and newsletter la!! Very good ah!!!

btw, your son's question should be the $500,000 question in the TV game show "Millionaire" la!!

I found the answer to your son's first question:

A lot of people agree that the inventor of the car was Karl Benz.

Karl Benz was an engineer and inventor who lived in Germany during the late 1800's and early 1900's. On January 29, 1886 Karl Benz patented the first car. On July 3, 1886 it was first demonstrated for the public in Mannheim, Germany.

Now for the long answer:

For a long time people tried to invent a self propelled vehicle. The oldest commonly known reference to this type of vehicle is in the works of Hero of Alexandria which suggested using steam power to replace horses in 150 B.C. (over 2000 years ago)

Leonardo da Vinci, a famous Italian artist and inventor, drew pictures of automated carriages during the Italian Renaissance (late 1400's A.D.)

A whole lot of people tried to develop ways to make steam powered cars during the 1700's and 1800's. Here is a list of some of the more important ones.
1769 - The Cugnot Carriage: Built by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot (French)
1825 - The Gurney Steam Coach: Built by Sir Goldsworth Gurney (English)
1878 - La Mancelle: Built by Amedee Bollee (French)

There were a whole lot more steam powered vehicles but these are a good place to start if you want to learn more about steam cars.

Steam powered cars were really big and didn't work very well so some other inventors were trying to come up with a way to power cars using a smaller and more dependable type of engine. In 1860 a Frenchman named Etienne Lenoir invented a thing called the "Internal Combustion Engine." A few years later in 1876 another man named Nikolous Augustus Otto invented a better kind of internal combustion engine in Germany. This kind of engine is very similar in principle to what is used in most cars today.

After the invention of the Internal Combustion Engine it was easier to make a car that was small enough and reliable enough to be practicle. Just like with the steam cars, a lot of people were trying to come up with an internal cumbustion engine car at the same time. The two most important people were Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. Both of these men patented a car in Germany in 1886 but Karl Benz patented his first so most people say he invented the car.

I did not buy GF from Sesame cos I found it's too simple and I've already had many books of similar topics.

No shopping today so nothing to report. Started off at nearly 1pm, went by bus (bus stop very near home) to SF downtown, got off just a short street away from cable car turntable, queued for tickets, queued for cable car ==> near Fishermen's Wharf, found a B&N across the street, went in for a browse and Starbucks (Cheesecake Factory cakes), then queued for cable car back, sat right in front on the side, protected by hanging passengers, rode from terminus to terminus, walked 1 street (less than a block), waited for bus, ==> bus stop across home, home for dinner by 7pm, sky still quite bright.
Only spent $12 total for cable car rides roundtrip, nearly $15 on frapuccino and cakes, and 2 x $1.60 on bus fare. Very cheap compared with shopping.

Lots of beggars downtown, some ask for $$ for "food and support", some play saxophone / sing, saw one Caucasian guy holding an empty cigarette packet in front of a small supermarket hoping that ppl would pity him and give him one.
One female tourist said she lost a enw digital camera - she and her friends were shooed out of the bus in a hurry so left the digital camera there and they think the driver took it cos when they remembered and looked for it the dcamera was no longer there only the driver had been on the bus.

No need to worry for me.
I don't go on dangerous / frightening rides.
Only goes on the BB rides with my son.
Hope D-land and all the playground having similar facilities will tighten up their maintenance, qc, management, etc to avoid similar mishaps. The Americans are actually very lazy ppl - at least most of them are, with little sense of responsibility.
2 yrs ago 1 tourist was dead after a collision in Magic Mountain (??) ride my son was very interested in that ride but fortunately wasn't tall enough and I refused to take such rides

because I'm scared.

Forgot to say, I will also tell my son to save up to buy his own M-Benz, his dream car.

I'm now at Pacific Coffee taking my ice mocha cuppaccino and making this post to you. Spent HK$32.

Your news about D-land is scarry!!

Hope similar won't happen in HK .... I've booked D-Hotel and D-land on Oct la!!

Tell you sth interesting ---- my son has just asked me to buy him a motor car (not a toy but a real motor vehicle). He specified that it should be blue in colour and the car reg no. should be KM1474!! Luckily he does not have any concept on car brands e.g. BMW, M-Benz, Porsche etc.
