DVD can keep the data over 50years when the storage place is in a very very good conditions,
such as :- temp control , humi... control, no sunlight... etc.
DVD-RW : is not good for long term storage.
if u need to update one of the photo.. then.... one more rubbish disk.... $$$ -> world environment...
comparing the size, $, time. Hard disk keeping the backup data is little bit better than DVD.
I suggest you to make 2 copies, one on DVD for prolonged storage, and other on external HDD for faster access. (I am doing it for photos and videos of my new-born daughter.)
As your main purpose for external HDD is for storage, not for mobility, I suggest you to use 3.5" external HDD instead of 2.5", because the cost will be lower and size is larger. You may buy a 320GB SATA2 3.5" HDD at $750 and $200 for a SATA to USB 2.0 3.5" HDD box. If you use 2.5" HDD, it will take 2 HDDs (160GB each) and it will cost you over $3000.
