Dear all Beijing mommy,

I would like to say "Hi" to all mommy. Actually, I will be in Beijing with my 4.5yrs old son the end of this year coz my husband needs to work there. I am so nervous coz my son needs to go to a new school. My friend in Beijing introduced this useful website to me and I found so many useful informations on this page and now I learn more about Beijing life. On the other hand, I would like to get more information about the international school from you all since I have no idea on this issue. Could you all please giveme some information about the rental such as which area is good to rent, property agent or comment about the international school in Beijing such as Canadian Int'l, Beanstalk, Australian Int'l? I heard that some school need to collect the capital levy every year (non-refundable), is it true?

Thanks a lot! I hope we can meet each other in Beijing soon.

Hi Joebo,
I'm no expert in this area but I recently exposed to a few international schools in the area. Yes, quite a number of schools (not just international, but also bi-lingual schools) will collect capital levy and some will be in the form of monthly or annual fees. You gotta be prepared that education is a lot more expensive than other places. I moved to Beijing from the States and I was having a cultural shock when I heard about how expensive it is to send my boy to school. I'm still shopping around and luckily I still have some time.

I've friends with kids going to Beanstalk, ISB and Dulwich. Out of all, I think Beanstalk is relatively less expensive and match what I would like. The 2 kids that I know going there are extremely well behaved and doing very well in school and sports. I think of school not only place to get educated but also to build up an all-rounded character. But then you also need to consider about where you husband's office will be and then where do you want to live. Traffic in Beijing is terrible during peak hours which you need to factor into your selection.

If you want a full picture of all schools in Beijing, you can try to get the book "Kids in Beijing" (ISBN 7-80202-391-2), describing the school education style, location and the related costs/fees. I found this rather helpful. Also, if you come for a visit, you may also want to pick up a copy of TBJ Kids. I don't think there is an online version, but you can try accessing That's Beijing online site at http://www.thatsbj.com/. Hope this help. PM me if you need more info.

Hi Mizuho,
Thank you so much for your information. Also, I really agree your point of view - school not only place to get educated. Actually, I concern my son's character more than the marks. I hope my son will enjoy his school life and build up a possitive mind. Could we chat on MSN? I will PM my hotmail address to you and phone number in HK. Hope to see you in Beijing soon.
