age 6, we r now in HK, getting private counselling psychologist for emotional therapy, speech therapist for spelling training, pysiotherapist for co ordination training and special need learning teacher for group playing for attitude, behaviour control. we are planning to return gold coast several yrs later, but my boy situation makes me hestitate to move back oz, i will go to GC and let my boy attending public school this july to aug abt 7 weeks, and see what's his own respond for totally new and english environment again (he was doing the same short attending to public sch 2 yrs ago abt the prep class time). i like to collect more info and prepare well what to do next.
In July 2016, your son may be eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NSID). It will give you flexibility to access funding for private therapy and psychological services. In terms of school, if your son is born in HK, then get passport later, he will be able to get into English as Second Language (ELS) class. The ELS class is usually less then 10 students and focus on Reading skills (but not nesssary for Dylexic student).
Some of the public school is open for hiring teaching assistant for student. But it depends on the student\'s serverity and how much funding the school get. You will have to check with the school individually.
thx alot. may i ask abit more why 2016, is it the law has passed for this insurance scheme? we did have our private insurance in oz, but we stop payment when in HK, is it similar to that? meanwhile, i am thinking whether public sch got better support, since we prefer the private school for better school environment and better peer group, what do u think?
NDIS is a national insurance. It is 100% funded by the government, it means you don\'t have to pay (obviously, depends on your child\'s severity and how much funding is approved).
There maybe changes to your private insurance due to the introduce of the NDIS, you will have to check with your own insurance company. (But they may not have info since NDIS is still very new)
With school, I guess it depends. One of my client goes to a public school and he has mild autism. His parents was very happy with the school, as they provide him with a support teacher and eventually he doesnt need it anymore. With private school, some of them have support unit, but it doesnt necessary means the teacher received special edu training (same as public school actually). Then, you need to consider the cost for private school. It is estimate that the cost could go up to 100k aus dollar in 2020 (not sure if QLD is the same as I live in Sydney).
Hi Elinor,
We have spoken about your son's issue last year. I hope you are doing well.
As you can see in my reply above, things have been change since our last conversation. The government has launched the NDIS which will give people more flexibility of choosing their service and it cover all ages.
Please see the below description for launching date for Victory.
" From July 2013, the first stage of the scheme in the Barwon area commenced for residents living in the local government areas (LGAs) of City of Greater Geelong, the Colac-Otway Shire, the Borough of Queenscliffe and the Surf Coast Shire. By July 2016, all Barwon area residents with significant and permanent disability will be able to access the scheme.
From July 2016, the NDIS will progressively roll out in Victoria and by July 2019, all eligible residents will be covered."
So it will depends on where you live.
In terms of school, it depends on your son's severity. Some of the children with ASD may not have any issue in academic. They may only have issue with socialisation. This may not qualify them to be involved in any of the learning support.
你好,我child 正於Sydney 請private high school year 12, 是新移民到了1.5 year,有asperger- high function and with dylexia , 曾問學校有任何幫忙,但學校說 政府沒有什麼資助或support,又話此類是impairment no any support? so without any learning support from year 10 , now he is in year 12 finally 沒有一科合格!,未來high school完成後都怎知還可讀什麼課程!

If he doesn't have a lot of life skills, he may need a group home or a share accommodation. Check Northcott Disability Services, they provide accommodation services.
In terms of education, you can look at TAFE program. They do have disability department.
