Card reader is not a storage device, it is a reader. i.e. you need to buy some memory cards like compact flash, memory sticks, SD etc first. You need to bring the card reader, along with your card.
Flash drives, if you are talking about Thumb Drives, they are handy and convenient. You simply plug them into any computer with USB ports, and then you can use them.
