Syd and Mel are big city but they still have country side but need to drive for at least 1.5 hours. Carins and Gold Coast are nice place to visit too.
For Motel is OK gar. Will you drive? You don't need to book in advance for the motel. For my practice, I will just drive in and ask for just take a look of the room and then decide on the price and the room condition. But you need to watch out if there's any big event in the area like Australia open (tennis), then you will hard to find a motel in Melbourne.
For farm stay or B&B, you will take Breakfast or/and dinner with the hosts. It's another kind of experience.
